# Abridge carries a $6.69 billion mark on trials showing its scribe saves 22 minutes a day

> The independent trials have landed next to the expansion metrics: 22 minutes a day is what a health system can actually count. That caps the per-encounter price and moves the value to clinical content and workflow, where Wolters Kluwer and Doximity trade.

[Abridge](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/abridge) spent six weeks selling access: 300 of the largest US health systems, more than 100 million patient-clinician conversations expected this year, an enterprise framework across all eight University of Texas health institutions, and [September's selection under the VA's ambient-AI contract](https://www.iatrox.com/blog/abridge-va-university-texas-enterprise-deals-clinical-ai-adoption), a five-year $775.72 million ceiling shared across competing vendors [2][3]. What landed alongside it is the first independent measurement of what that access buys a clinician: 22 minutes a day [1]. That gap, priced against Abridge's $6.69 billion private mark, is the whole valuation question [5].

## What the trials actually measured

The randomised evidence is the new fact this month. [A 24-week trial across 66 practitioners in Wisconsin and Illinois](https://www.innovationnewsnetwork.com/ambient-ai-changing-work-clinical-note/74942/), using Abridge in production, found note time down 0.36 hours a day, no statistically significant gain in professional fulfilment, and a cut in out-of-hours work that stopped being significant once the highest 3% of observations were dropped [1].

A UCLA head-to-head in NEJM AI found the same shape: Nabla cut note-writing time 9.5%, [Microsoft](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/microsoft)'s DAX 1.7% was not significant, and clinicians used the tools in only about a third of eligible visits [1]. A Veterans Health Administration evaluation, 30 blinded raters scoring five standardized cases, put human note takers above 11 AI scribes in all five [1].

*Chart: **Ambient documentation and billing AI took three quarters of 2025 healthcare-AI money** Bars chart of 2025 healthcare AI venture investment in millions of dollars by category: ambient documentation $600M, coding and billing automation $450M, and the remaining $350M.*

*2025 healthcare AI venture investment by category, millions of dollars, per Menlo Ventures [5]. The first two bars are the categories Menlo names; the third is a derived remainder ($1.4B total minus the two named categories), arithmetic by this publication, not a Menlo figure. [5]*

## Twenty-two minutes caps the per-encounter price

Twenty-two minutes is real work lifted from a clinician's day, which is why deployments keep growing. But it is a benefit a buyer can count, and a benefit a buyer can count is a price a buyer can negotiate. Volume metrics justify the funnel; they do not set the margin.

Abridge's own answer is pre-bill claim review, its first product in the mid-revenue cycle, [launched this month on October 9](https://theinference.org/article/abridge-launches-hospital-claim-review-putting-athelas-and-parent-commure-s-7-billion-valuation-to-the-test), which we covered then [5]. [Doximity](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/doximity) is making the same move from the other side, bundling Scribe, Ask and Dialer into one assistant [4].

## Own the content, not the scribe

That is why the content layer is the position to hold. UpToDate's evidence base is now embedded in AI tools from Epic, Abridge, Doximity and Suki, and Doximity's clinical AI tools already sit in [more than 165 health systems](https://www.fiercehealthcare.com/ai-and-machine-learning/doximity-adds-uptodate-ask-push-become-doctors-go-ai-platform) [4]. Wolters Kluwer is the listed way to own it; Doximity is the public comparable.

One caveat: the licensing is contestable, because the platforms embedding UpToDate could eventually build or buy their own evidence layer. But peer-reviewed clinical judgment is far harder to re-derive than a fluent draft, and the VHA's five-for-five result shows exactly how hard.

The mark to watch, then, is $6.69 billion against 22 minutes. The next clock is concrete: what the first VA task orders are worth, and when they land.

## Takeaway

The first independent trials put Abridge's value at 22 minutes saved per clinician-day, a countable benefit that caps per-encounter pricing; the durable margin sits in clinical content and mid-revenue-cycle workflow.
