# Abridge launches hospital claim review, putting Athelas and parent Commure's $7 billion valuation to the test

> On August 5 Commure's Athelas shipped an agentic billing suite; on September 14 Abridge, embedded in 300 health systems, launched its first claims product. The convergence puts the $7B mark Commure raised into in May up against a rival with deeper hospital distribution, and the listed middle, Waystar and Solventum, between the two.

Seven weeks separate two product launches that are really one collision. On August 5, 2026 [Athelas](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/athelas), the clinic-software arm of Commure, [shipped Practice Manager, billed as the industry's first agentic practice-management suite](https://finance.yahoo.com/healthcare/articles/athelas-launches-practice-manager-worlds-130000274.html): teams fix a hundred denials at once, rules written in plain English scrub claims before they ship, and the company says users process 10x the claims in the same time [1]. On September 14 [Abridge](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/abridge), the ambient-documentation leader, [launched pre-bill claim review, its first product built for the mid-revenue cycle](https://www.fiercehealthcare.com/ai-and-machine-learning/abridge-expands-revenue-cycle-ai-powered-pre-bill-claim-review), auditing inpatient DRGs against the clinical record before claims drop [3][4]. [The documentation AI is moving down into billing](https://theinference.org/article/blue-cross-prices-the-ai-coding-boom-at-942-million-days-after-abridge-moved-into-billing). The billing AI is moving up into full practice operations. They are converging on the same dollar.

## Both platforms already have scale receipts

Commure [raised $70M in May at a $7B post-money valuation](https://hitconsultant.net/2026/05/19/commure-secures-70m-to-drive-85-autonomous-revenue-cycle-execution/), led by General Catalyst with Sequoia, [Morgan Stanley](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/morgan-stanley) and Kirkland & Ellis [2]. Its RCM platform processes tens of billions in annual claims, completing 85%+ of billing workflows without human intervention, inside 500+ organizations across 3,000+ care sites, with more than 130 large health systems including HCA and Tenet on the platform [2]. [Athelas](https://www.athelas.com/)' homepage claims 90%+ of claims require no human touch with its automations [5]. Abridge answers with distribution, not claims throughput: 300 of the largest US health systems contracted and 100M+ patient-clinician conversations this year [3][4]. Investors already treat these as the two big prizefight categories: of $1.4B invested in healthcare AI in 2025, ambient documentation took $600M and coding and billing automation $450M, per Menlo Ventures [3].

*Chart: **Ambient documentation and billing AI took three quarters of 2025 healthcare-AI money** Bars chart of 2025 healthcare AI investment by category: ambient documentation $600M, coding and billing automation $450M, and a derived remainder bar labeled 'Rest of 2025 healthcare AI (derived)' at $350M*

*2025 healthcare AI investment by category, millions of dollars, per Menlo Ventures [3]. The first two bars are the categories Menlo names; the third is a derived remainder ($1.4B total minus the two named categories), arithmetic by this publication, not a Menlo figure. [3]*

## Who pays for the collision

The squeeze lands on the listed middle. Waystar, the largest pure-play, posted Q2 revenue of $319.7M, up 18% year over year, raised full-year guidance to $1.276B to $1.294B, and in late August [shipped its own agentic agents for resubmitting denied claims](https://www.unite.ai/waystar-puts-agentic-ai-to-work-on-claims-denials-and-patient-bills/), so the middle is arming rather than waiting [6]. Solventum, Waystar and SmarterDx are the established mid-revenue-cycle vendors Abridge now competes with directly, and Abridge's tool replaces the legacy pre-bill audit, the one that parses signed discharge summaries in isolation weeks after discharge, forcing coders to query physicians from memory [3][4]. For private-market money, the harder question is Commure's $7B mark, set in May, six weeks before Abridge's first revenue-cycle product arrived [2]. Commure's counter is breadth: an EHR, ambient notes, voice agents and billing in one stack touching 7% of US appointments, with customers like Lattimore PT cutting billing costs 75% while adding 35 locations [1][5]. Abridge holds the deeper hospital rosters; Athelas, for now, holds the ambulatory specialties where its rival does not yet play [4].

## Where Athelas goes next

The answer is written into Commure's May raise: the new capital is earmarked to expand RCM and practice-management tools across hospitals, specialty practices and integrated delivery networks, the same inpatient and enterprise accounts Abridge just entered [2]. So watch two things: whether Athelas follows through with an inpatient pre-bill offering of its own, and whether Abridge's pre-bill tool lands beyond early partner Reid Health in the hospital systems it already owns. Whichever moves first into the other's home ground settles what the $7B mark is worth.

## Takeaway

Abridge's pre-bill claim review moves the documentation leader into billing seven weeks after Athelas shipped agentic practice management, and whichever crosses into the other's home ground first settles what Commure's $7 billion May valuation is worth.
