# ADP counted 86,000 jobs added in October while professional services shed 27,000 for a third straight month

> ADP's October report beat on 86,000 hires and split underneath: 27,000 professional-services jobs gone a third month running, while the payroll processor that published it also sells the agents that would empty those desks.

On November 4 [ADP](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/automatic-data-processing), the payroll processor behind [the monthly National Employment Report](https://mediacenter.adp.com/2026-11-04-ADP-National-Employment-Report-Private-Sector-Employment-Increased-by-86,000-Jobs-in-October) it produces with Stanford's Digital Economy Lab, counted 86,000 private-sector jobs added in October: 19,000 above the estimate, [the same pace as September after revisions](https://theinference.org/article/90-000-jobs-one-misread-table-adp-s-september-story-points-at-rates-not-ai), with employers of every size hiring [1][2]. One line further down, the same report splits. Professional and business services lost 27,000 jobs, the third straight monthly decline, and information lost 2,000, while trade, transportation and utilities added 39,000 and construction added 13,000 [1]. "There were weak spots," ADP's own release says, then names them [1].

## The money this week backed the workers who remain

ADP's business still runs on paychecks processed, and the paycheck business is beating. Fiscal first-quarter 2027 adjusted earnings per share came in at $2.82 against a $2.77 estimate, [a sixth straight quarterly beat](https://247wallst.com/cards/adp-q1-2027-earnings-adp-01m612j2m9f7t0dwd60tvt4dbn), and [management lifted full-year adjusted EPS growth guidance](https://theinference.org/article/adp-raised-its-profit-outlook-on-ai-cost-cuts-as-its-own-data-shows-hiring-at-16-750-jobs-a-week) to 10 to 12 percent [3]. September-quarter revenue was $5.49 billion, up 6.1% year over year [4]. The stock was quoted at €270.58 on November 7 [5]. Nothing in the aggregate labor data threatens that: total private hiring beat and broadened.

## The buildout is hiring its own payroll

Where the gains sit is the tell. Trade, transportation and utilities contributed 39,000 and construction 13,000 of the 86,000, and small establishments added 28,000 [1]. Peter Boockvar, editor of The Boock Report, ties much of it to the data center buildout, which helped construction and the trade, transport and utilities component, along with healthcare [2]. AI demand is not only renting compute; it is hiring the crews and the freight.

## The jobs people take now pay far more than the jobs they keep

The report's pay lines measure the churn. Base pay for US job-changers rose 4.8% year over year, the best pace since July 2025, against 3.0% for job-stayers, and gross pay for changers rose 7.6% [1][2]. [ADP's Canadian arm reported the same shape a day later](https://finance.yahoo.com/economy/articles/adp-canada-pay-insights-pay-131500173.html): base pay for job-changers up 6.0% (10.4% gross) against 3.0% (4.5% gross) for stayers, drawn from about 1.6 million Canadian workers [6]. Displacement, when it comes, shows up first as fewer workers left to process.

## The agent software has not reached most of the market

On November 8 ADP published [its HR buyer survey](https://www.adp.com/spark/articles/2025/12/key-hr-technology-trends-for-2026-and-how-to-plan): 48% of large businesses have adopted agentic AI, 25% of midsized and 4% of small ones, and CHROs project 327% growth in agent adoption by 2027 [7]. The same piece quotes [Gartner](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/gartner): over 40% of agentic AI projects will be canceled by end-2027 on weak governance, and 79% of IT leaders say agents bring new security challenges [7]. ADP markets the agents and, in the same document, sells the governance to survive them.

## The trade is early, and the footnotes are the tell

The clean read: October's report is a reallocation, not a collapse, so [a short on displaced white-collar work](https://theinference.org/article/barclays-names-ai-in-5-000-job-cuts-while-total-us-layoffs-fall-39) jumps ahead of the adoption curve. ADP is building the other side meanwhile: embedded payroll with PNC Bank announced October 28, and [a Campfire partnership on October 30](https://www.cpapracticeadvisor.com/2026/11/05/adp-and-campfire-partner-to-expand-access-to-hcm-capabilities/193283/) that pipes payroll and headcount data into an AI-native ERP, where Campfire's agents prepare accruals and reconcile labor to the books, each entry approved by a person [5][8].

The calendar does the rest. Watch the professional and business services line in the December 2 report and Canada's pay release on December 3 [1][6]. The headline pays ADP's bills; the footnotes price its future.

## Takeaway

October's split is a reallocation, not a collapse: the buildout did the hiring while professional services bled a third month, and ADP profits from payrolls either way.
