# ADP is up 8 days straight even as its weekly hiring gauge turned down for the first time in six weeks

> ADP's weekly NER Pulse turned down on October 13 for the first time in six weeks, and the stock still pushed its winning streak to eight days. Fiscal 2026 revenue grew 6.7% on about 1% more client employees on payroll.

[ADP](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/automatic-data-processing), the payroll processor behind paychecks for more than 1.1 million companies [1], publishes the NER Pulse, a weekly update of the monthly ADP National Employment Report, with the [Stanford Digital Economy Lab](https://digitaleconomy.stanford.edu/publication/canaries-in-the-coal-mine-six-facts-about-the-recent-employment-effects-of-artificial-intelligence/). [On October 13 it read 24,750 private-sector jobs a week for the four weeks ending September 26](https://finance.yahoo.com/economy/articles/adp-national-employment-report-preliminary-121500082.html), down from 25,250, the first slowdown after five straight weeks of strengthening [1]. The series bottomed at 8,250 the week of July 25; 24,750 a week is roughly 100,000 jobs a month [1].

The stock went the other way. October 14 trading put ADP at $279.27, an eighth consecutive up day, up 8.38% across the streak and the longest run since November 15, 2019, though still 14.55% below the record close of $326.81 set on June 6, 2025 [2].

## The revenue line does not follow the jobs line

Fiscal 2026, which ended June 30 [5], is the decoupling in one line: revenue of $21.95 billion, up 6.7% [3], against client employees on payroll up about 1% [3]. Net earnings rose 8.2% to $4.41 billion; diluted earnings per share rose 9.6% to $10.94 [3][4]. Interest on roughly $40 billion of client payroll cash added $1.35 billion, 23.6% of pretax earnings [5]. The market trades ADP as a labor-market proxy; the profit-and-loss runs on price, product mix and client-funds interest, not headcount.

## The AI fight runs through ADP's own records

Chief economist Nela Richardson [told Reuters](https://x.com/Reuters/status/2108754422687744385): "It's not taking over our jobs, it's taking over our work." [6] The Stanford lab that co-produces the Pulse reads the same payroll records differently: no economy-wide displacement, but [workers aged 22 to 25 in AI-exposed occupations sit 19% below less-exposed peers](https://digitaleconomy.stanford.edu/publication/canaries-in-the-coal-mine-six-facts-about-the-recent-employment-effects-of-artificial-intelligence/), a gap built on slower hiring rather than firing [7].

The outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas [counts 116,175 US cuts blamed on AI from January through August](https://coincentral.com/ai-jobs-statistics/), about 22% of all announced cuts [8]; [August alone brought 3,462](https://finance.yahoo.com/economy/article/layoff-plans-trended-down-in-august-and-fewer-companies-are-blaming-ai-093000703.html), the lowest monthly total since the end of 2025, with restructuring back on top [9]. On this evidence, [the AI argument](https://theinference.org/article/90-000-jobs-one-misread-table-adp-s-september-story-points-at-rates-not-ai) looks more like a driver of the share price than of the revenue line.

## October 28 prices the jobs noise

First-quarter fiscal 2027 results land October 28 before the Nasdaq open [3][4], after a fourth-quarter adjusted-earnings beat of $2.64 against $2.59 expected [5] and fiscal 2027 guidance of $12.12 to $12.34 a share [5]. Analysts sat at Neutral, average target $286.40, as of October 9 [4]. The next Pulse prints October 20 [1].

The tell is not the jobs print. It is whether revenue growth again outruns client-employee growth [3], and whether the client-funds interest line, $1.35 billion last year, keeps compounding [5]. Eight up days have already paid for a recovery the gauge stopped confirming.

## Takeaway

The weekly Pulse turned down for the first time in six weeks, but ADP's fiscal 2026 P&L runs on price, product mix and client-funds interest, not headcount; October 28 earnings will test whether revenue keeps outrunning payrolls.
