# AeroVironment's banks raised its bid bonding to $150 million as it chases a $1.7 billion Space Force contract

> A credit agreement 8-K filed November 4 shows AeroVironment's lenders expanded its letter-of-credit capacity sixfold and added cash-collateralized bonds for customer deposits. That is how a company provisions to bid on the $1.7 billion Space Force contract it lost, and it sets the terms of the December print.

[AeroVironment](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/aerovironment)'s bank syndicate quietly signed documents that say more about the next two years than last week's election selloff did. Two credit amendments, filed in [an 8-K on November 4](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1368622/000110465926122416/0001104659-26-122416-index.htm) with [Bank of America](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/bank-of-america) as administrative agent, lifted the letter-of-credit sublimit from $25 million to $150 million and raised the revolving facility by $100 million to $450 million, adding [JPMorgan Chase](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/jpmorgan-chase) as a letter-of-credit issuer and BMO Bank as a new lender [1].

Defence contractors post letters of credit when they bid on government work; a sublimit that grows sixfold in three weeks is a company preparing to place bids it could not previously bond. [1]

## The bids those banks are underwriting

The timing matters because of what those bids are for. AeroVironment bought BlueHalo in 2025 in an all-stock deal worth about $4.1 billion, justified largely by projected cash flow from [the $1.7 billion Space Force SCAR contract](https://upside.pandobit.com/en/news/2026/11/aerovironment-is-down-70-from-its-high-while-drone-budgets-explode-here-s-what-1050687/) [2]. In January the Space Force issued a stop-work order; in March it reopened the program to other suppliers, and AeroVironment wrote down the space division by $151 million, then another $89 million in June. [2] That is the contract the banks are now underwriting room to chase.

The amendment adds a detail worth reading twice: bilateral and cash-collateralized letters of credit for deposit obligations. Cash-collateralized means AeroVironment puts its own cash behind the bond if a customer demands it. The company is telling its lenders, and now the market, how large a bid it intends to place and how much of its balance sheet it may tie up placing it. [1]

## The signal under the selloff

The press covered the stock's 9.8% drop on midterm-driven fears about Pentagon oversight [3] and [the analyst consensus target](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/2-4-billion-fund-bought-120644063.html), which Yahoo Finance has watched fall nearly in half over the past year to $212. [4] Both are real, but neither is the signal here. [Stifel](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/stifel) cut its target from $389 to $315 while keeping a buy rating, and Leonardo DRS was named a subcontractor on the Army's LOCUST X3 laser program the same week. [5] Progress, trimmed expectations and a weak tape coexist.

## Where the chain is decided

The chain runs: the banks provide the bonding capacity, the company places a bid, and the Space Force decides whether the $1.7 billion program comes back whole, in part, or not at all. That last decision date is not public; what is signed is only the first link.

The unresolved link is the one that decides whether [the record $1.5 billion funded backlog](https://theinference.org/article/aerovironment-is-down-43-despite-a-record-1-5-billion-backlog-and-a-464-8-million-army-laser-win) we reported in October carries the company through, or the space write-downs were the start [1]. The fiscal Q2 print and 10-Q in early December, where the amendment appears as an exhibit, are where the space backlog gets its answer. [1] Watch whether the new letters of credit are actually drawn before you judge the contract lost.

## Takeaway

AeroVironment's lenders lifted its letter-of-credit sublimit sixfold to $150 million and added cash-collateralized bonds for customer deposits, a provision for rebidding the $1.7 billion Space Force SCAR contract; the fiscal Q2 print and 10-Q in early December are where the space backlog gets its answer.
