# AI hardware drove 76% of first-quarter goods-trade growth, and DHL is spending to catch it

> DHL's own data says AI hardware now carries three-quarters of goods-trade growth, and the carrier is spending on Poland and India chip logistics to catch it. Analysts are still trimming estimates, which is the clue about what the market has not priced.

[DHL](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/dhl) says AI hardware, not tariffs, is now carrying world trade, and it is [spending its own capital](https://theinference.org/article/dhl-rents-the-post-office-for-10-billion-plus-and-skips-buying-trucks) on that bet while analysts trim estimates. That gap is the signal to watch: the German carrier is the listed proxy for the freight leg of the AI buildout, and its next results will show whether the boom reaches its margins.

## AI hardware went from 42% of trade growth to 76%

The numbers are in DHL's [Globalization Tracker, published with NYU Stern on October 7](https://www.dcvelocity.com/supply-chain/other-services/global-logistics/dhl-ai-infrastructure-boom-outweighs-tariff-policy-damage) [1]. Goods needed to build AI, semiconductors and data-transmission equipment among them, drove 42% of goods-trade growth in 2025 and 76% in the first quarter of 2026, on WTO and OECD analysis cited in the report [1]. First-half 2026 was [the fastest half-year of goods-trade growth in 15 years](https://theinference.org/article/descartes-systems-ai-agents-have-no-price-rbc-and-loop-capital-rated-them-anyway-as-the-import-boom-crests) outside the Covid rebound, and DHL now projects 3.4% average annual trade growth through 2029, up from 2.7% over the prior decade [1]. The boom is regional and physical: East Asia and the Pacific grew trade value 24% in the first five months of 2026, ahead of Europe at 12% and Sub-Saharan Africa at 11% [6].

## DHL is putting money behind its own data

DHL is backing its own data with money. It [committed more than €400 million across Poland, Czechia, Hungary and Romania by 2030](https://www.interiordaily.com/article/9881912/dhl-group-plans-more-than-eur400-million-investment-in-central-and-eastern-europe/) for warehousing, freight and express capacity near Europe's nearshoring hubs [2], and it is building its [first dedicated semiconductor warehouse in Dholera](https://www.maritimegateway.com/dhl-semiconductor-warehouse-dholera/), India, next to the Tata Electronics fab being built with Taiwan's Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (PSMC), competing with Japan's NX Group for the fab's logistics contracts [4]. The pattern runs deeper than DHL: Kuehne+Nagel just became primary logistics provider for [AWS](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/amazon) data centers, and DHL Global Forwarding sizes data center logistics at $23 billion in 2025, heading toward $35 billion by 2030 [5].

## The sell side is still modeling a freight cycle

The sell side has not repriced any of this. Erste Group Bank, an Austrian sell-side bank, [cut its FY2026 earnings forecast for DHL on October 8](https://www.marketbeat.com/instant-alerts/estimates-fy2026-eps-forecast-for-dhl-group-decreased-by-analyst-2026-10-14/), to $2.00 from $2.03, and the consensus rating sits at hold despite an August quarter that beat by a wide margin, $1.05 per share against $0.51 expected [3]. The trim is the clue the market has not caught up: analysts are still modeling a freight cycle, not a structural shift in what moves and how much it pays.

*Chart: **The August beat was 18 times the size of the forecast trim** Column chart of DHL earnings per share in US dollars: the August quarter came in at $1.05 against $0.51 expected, and the FY2026 estimate was cut to $2.00 from $2.03.*

## The next results decide which case is real

Here is the chain to watch. AI capex buys chips, servers and cooling gear, most of it made in Asia; moving that high-value, time-critical cargo is air freight and specialized warehousing, which command premium prices. If that mix shows up in DHL's Express and Global Forwarding margins, the current hold ratings are mispriced. If it proves to be one-off buildout flows, the capex is a bet on a cycle's peak. The next results decide which, and at about 11 times earnings the market is paying for neither case yet [3].

## Takeaway

DHL's tracker puts AI goods at 76% of first-quarter goods-trade growth, and the carrier is committing more than €400 million to serve that flow. If it reaches Express and Global Forwarding margins at about 11 times earnings, hold ratings are too cautious, and the next results settle it.
