# AI insurance broker Harper claims 1,000 customers a month; its homepage has gained 1,000 since February

> Harper, the AI-run commercial insurance brokerage that raised $46.8 million in February, says its model handles 1,000-plus customers a month. Its homepage counter has moved about 1,000 businesses in the seven months since.

## Back in the seat, on a throughput claim

Dakotah Rice grew up in rural Alabama watching his father run a nightclub and his uncle lose a trucking company to financing and insurance costs [5]. He shut his first company, the investment firm Poolit, in 2023, conceding to TechCrunch that his ego made the failure hard to accept [1]. His second, [Harper](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/harper), is a licensed San Francisco insurance agency whose AI reads applications, chases underwriters and places workers' compensation, general and professional liability with more than 160 carriers for daycares, contractors, dealerships and bars, in one to two days against a traditional broker's five to seven [1]. [Harper](https://www.harperinsure.com/) is the broker, not a vendor to one: "We are the brokerage. We own the customer relationship," Rice said [2]. On February 25, 2026, it announced $46.8 million in combined seed and Series A funding, led by Emergence Capital with Y Combinator, Peak XV, Antler, 10X Founders, Fellows Fund and Outset Capital, which the company calls the largest publicly disclosed Series A by a Black founder in the United States [1][2][5].

## The claim and the counter

The round was sold on throughput. [Rice said a human-led brokerage sales team closes 20 to 30 deals a month while Harper's AI handles more than 1,000 customers a month](https://pulse2.com/harper-insure-47-million-series-a-raised-to-build-the-insurance-company-every-business-deserves/), after serving more than 5,000 businesses in 13 months [1][2]. [The homepage now reads 6,000-plus businesses and a 98.78% renewal rate](https://www.harperinsure.com/), and [the newsroom has carried nothing since the February 26 funding post](https://www.harperinsure.com/news) [3][4]. That is roughly 1,000 net additions in about seven and a half months, a pace near 130 a month, an eighth of the headline capacity [1][3]. At a 98.78% renewal rate, churn is an unlikely explanation; likelier is a definition gap between customers served in a month and customers kept, and nothing Harper has published settles it [3][4]. The February number was a speed; the homepage number is a census.

*Chart: **Net additions run at about an eighth of Harper's claimed monthly capacity** Bar chart comparing Harper's claimed AI capacity of 1,000 customers a month, its computed net-addition pace of about 133 a month since the February raise, and the midpoint of a human-led sales team's 20 to 30 deals a month.*

*Customers per month. Claim and human baseline from Rice via TechCrunch, February 25, 2026; net pace computed from Harper's 5,000-plus businesses at the raise and 6,000-plus on its homepage, October 12, 2026; human bar is the midpoint of Rice's 20 to 30 range. [1][3]*

## Whose money it moves

The bet is Emergence's to carry, and the model has not yet shown the pace it was priced on. The distribution under attack sits with listed brokers: Marsh McLennan, Aon and Arthur J. Gallagher [booked $27.0 billion, $17.2 billion and $13.9 billion of revenue in 2025](https://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&CIK=0000062709) [6][7][8]. TechCrunch names AI-native Gyde plus AI toolmakers FurtherAI and Vantel, fellow YC alums, chasing the same small-business accounts [1].

*Chart: **Incumbent brokers booked $58.1 billion in 2025; Harper raised $46.8 million** Bar chart of FY2025 revenue for Marsh McLennan ($27.0B), Aon ($17.2B) and Arthur J. Gallagher ($13.9B).*

*FY2025 revenue in billions of dollars, from SEC filings. Harper's $46.8 million combined round, for comparison, is under 1% of the three incumbents' combined total. [6][7][8]*

The tell is the counter itself. If it passes 7,000-plus businesses before Harper publishes a revenue or retention figure, the capacity claim held; if it sticks near 6,000, "1,000 customers a month" meant something softer than customers. Watch whether Harper says what it counts.

## Takeaway

Harper's homepage counter has moved about 1,000 businesses in the seven months since its $46.8 million raise, an eighth of the 1,000-a-month capacity its founder claimed while selling the round.
