# AI's price wave reaches the processor: Intel up to 20%, Qualcomm 10%, TSMC next

> Intel has raised processor prices three times since late last year and Qualcomm added about 10% to PC chips this month, with TSMC's own 2027 increases priced in behind them. Notebook makers carry the bill first, holiday shoppers next.

The AI buildout has moved its invoice to the processor. [Intel](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/intel) [has raised chip prices three times since late last year](https://www.trendforce.com/news/2026/10/12/news-cpu-price-hike-wave-intel-reportedly-up-to-20-qualcomm-10-amd-may-join-as-tsmc-costs-climb/), [Qualcomm](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/qualcomm) lifted its PC platforms about 10% this month, and [AMD](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/amd) is preparing adjustments of its own, all before [TSMC](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/tsmc)'s 2027 increases land [1]. Memory went first, GPUs next; the processor is the third line item to be repriced [2].

## Intel's steepest hikes land on TSMC silicon

Intel's September 1 round raised high-end Panther Lake models 15-20%, against 5-10% for Meteor Lake and Arrow Lake [1]. The sharpest increases hit the Panther Lake variants whose high-end GPU tiles are made by TSMC on N3E, beside CPU tiles on Intel's own 18A [1]. Intel's biggest increases land on the one part of its flagship chip it does not make. Analysts put [cumulative Intel CPU increases this year near 30% after a third round in October](https://www.techtimes.com/articles/328672/20261006/intel-cpu-prices-climbed-30-because-ai-seized-global-memory-production.htm) [3].

Qualcomm moved this month, adding about 10% to Snapdragon X and X2 Elite PC platforms from October [1], [a cost Dell, Lenovo and HP are expected to pass down](https://theinference.org/article/intel-and-amd-lift-prices-10-and-hand-tsmc-s-bill-to-the-pc-makers) [2]. AMD has begun ramping EPYC "Venice" on TSMC's 2nm, and CEO [Lisa Su](https://theinference.org/markets/people/lisa-su) [said on a October 5-6 Taiwan trip that supply will rise substantially in 2027 with TSMC and other partners](https://www.networkworld.com/article/4231781/amd-to-ramp-cpu-gpu-supply-in-2027-as-ai-demand-surges.html) [1][4].

*Chart: **The pass-through outruns the input: Intel's top hike runs at twice TSMC's expected node rise** Bar chart ranking six price increases: Intel high-end Panther Lake 15 to 20 percent, TSMC 2027 advanced packaging 10 to 15 percent, Qualcomm PC platforms 10 percent, Intel Meteor Lake and Arrow Lake 5 to 10 percent, TSMC 2027 advanced nodes 5 to 10 percent, TSMC 2027 mature nodes 3 to 5 percent.*

## TSMC collects in 2027; memory already has

The upstream cause is priced. Forecasts put 2027 TSMC increases at 5-10% on advanced nodes, [10-15% on packaging](https://theinference.org/article/nvidia-prepays-1-5-billion-to-skip-the-ai-packaging-queue-america-will-relieve-in-2028) and 3-5% on mature nodes [1], and [July reporting put wafer rises of up to 10% from January 2027, with 10-15% surcharges beyond forecast volumes](https://www.techspot.com/news/113195-tsmc-plans-up-10-price-increases-advanced-mature.html) [5]. Memory moved earlier: Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan put it 5-7x above prior levels, about 75% of the cost of some lower-end devices, and says Intel fills half its orders [1][3][6].

## Notebook brands cannot hold price, spec and margin at once

TrendForce sees [2026 notebook shipments down 9.4%](https://www.trendforce.com/presscenter/news/20261008-13264.html), with CPU, DRAM and SSD at about 68% of a $900 notebook's bill of materials in 3Q26 [1][7]. Its 2027 base case is a low-single-digit shipment decline that widens to high-single-digit if costs reach shoppers, because higher prices stretch replacement cycles [7].

## AMD is the holdout, for now

The counterweight is thin. AMD has not formally raised consumer desktop chip prices [3], and TrendForce expects brands to absorb part of the hit rather than price buyers out entirely [7]. Neither holds for long: AMD's adjustments are in preparation [1], and its 2nm server ramp ties it to the same wafer bill [4].

## A 100-billion-parameter phone on a memory diet

The demand side explains the nerve. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon [says AI companies are building phones to run 100-billion-parameter models continuously by 2028](https://wccftech.com/qualcomm-ceo-smartphones-100b-llms-2028-dram-supply-cost/) [8]; a 4-bit version needs roughly 50GB of RAM, in a market where makers have walked back 24GB variants [8]. Qualcomm is selling the 2028 AI phone into the shortage that is repricing it. Watch whether TSMC's January 2027 wafer increases set off a second retail wave in the first half of next year [3].

## Takeaway

Intel has raised CPU prices three times, up to 20% on high-end Panther Lake, and Qualcomm added 10% to PC chips, with TSMC's 2027 increases already priced in; notebook makers absorb the bill first and holiday shoppers next.
