# Airbnb and Amadeus sell rain insurance 12 days apart; Amadeus says bookings convert 11% better

> Airbnb put a Chubb-backed rain payout on its checkout on October 8; Amadeus switched the same product on inside iHotelier on October 20, and the hotel conversion numbers it reports are the first read on what an insurance attach is worth.

Two rain payouts now sit on travel booking screens, twelve days apart, and neither company mentioned the other. [Airbnb](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/airbnb) (ABNB) [launched an optional weather protection add-on for guests in ten European countries](https://news.airbnb.com/introducing-weather-protection-a-new-way-to-protect-trips-when-it-rains) on October 8, 2026 [1]. On October 20, [Amadeus (AMS.MC)](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/amadeus-it-group), the Madrid-based travel technology group, switched the same product logic on inside iHotelier, the central reservation system its hotel clients book on [3].

The unanswered stakes belong to Airbnb: more than half its listings exist only on its platform, over 90% of its traffic arrives direct, and its take rate runs near 13% [5]. That makes checkout extras the one fee an AI travel agent cannot easily comparison-shop.

## The stakes: hotels paid for conversion

The only quantified read comes from Amadeus's own release. Hotels selling these integrated protections take a revenue share on every sale, and Amadeus reports an average [11% lift in booking conversion and 2% fewer cancellations](https://www.zonebourse.com/actualite-bourse/amadeus-it-s-a-enrichit-ihotelier-avec-de-nouvelles-fonctionnalites-d-assurance-voyage-ce785cdbd081f021) [3]. Airbnb publishes no attach or premium figures for its [Chubb](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/chubb-limited) product at all [1].

*Chart: **Amadeus sells hotels an 11% conversion lift; Airbnb defends a 13% take rate** Bars comparing Airbnb's roughly 13% take rate with Amadeus's self-reported 11% lift in hotel booking conversion and 2% drop in cancellations from integrated travel insurance.*

*Amadeus's 11% conversion lift and 2% cancellation reduction are from its own October 20, 2026, iHotelier release, self-reported and unaudited. Airbnb's take rate is the roughly 13% figure reported by the Wall Street Journal on October 16, 2026. Units: percent. [3][5]*

## Opposite ends of one booking

Airbnb's version is sold to guests. Justin Brouse, Airbnb's director of strategic partnerships, AirCover and insurance, pitched it as value back when it rains, with no claim to file [1][2].

Underwriter Chubb triggers the payout when at least 1.5mm of rain falls in an hour between 8am and 8pm for the policy's minimum hours, using NASA, ECMWF and NOAA data [1][2]. Amadeus's version is sold to hotels through Peter Altmann, the company's vice president of mobility and travel protection: parametric weather guarantees from Sensible Weather and conventional cover from battleface, with the providers handling claims so hoteliers carry no operational load [3]. Amadeus had already sold Travel Protection through agencies and some of the largest airlines; iHotelier opens the hotel channel [3][4].

## The fine print both sides skip

Airbnb's cover pays €50 to €1,000 a day, but only to guests resident in the ten countries, and it excludes international trips to the U.S. and certain restricted territories [1]. Amadeus's 11% and 2% are its own marketing figures, unaudited and self-reported, and the company [reports Q3 results on November 6, 2026](https://www.ad-hoc-news.de/boerse/news/unternehmensnachrichten/amadeus-it-aktie-salamair-oeffnet-neuen-vertriebsweg/70375385), the first print where the hotel channel enters the numbers [3][4].

## What to watch

The open question neither release answers is who owns the ancillary fee when an AI agent books the stay. Expedia hedged by signing on as a [partner for Meta's Muse agent](https://theinference.org/article/after-muse-took-6-2-off-airbnb-chesky-promised-an-agent-and-the-hotels-he-swore-off) while Airbnb held back [5]. Airbnb has homes the bots cannot replace; now it is selling a fee at checkout the bots have not learned to bid for. Watch Amadeus's November 6 print, and watch whether the same payout shows up on an agent's screen [5].

## Takeaway

Airbnb put a Chubb-backed rain payout on its checkout on October 8 and Amadeus switched the same product logic on inside iHotelier on October 20; Amadeus's self-reported 11% conversion lift is the first read on what an insurance attach is worth, and its November 6 Q3 print is the first hard test.
