# Airbnb promised $500 million for crisis housing. The dimes cover $28 million of it.

> Ten cents a booking against 57 million stays a year leaves roughly 94 cents of every philanthropic dollar for Airbnb itself, announced the same week its Los Angeles political spending reached $12.6 million and five days before the city votes on Nov 3.

[Airbnb](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/airbnb) announced its charity on Wednesday and its politics broke on Thursday. At Milk Studios in Los Angeles, with Jimmy Kimmel hosting and José Andrés designing the menu, CEO [Brian Chesky](https://theinference.org/markets/people/brian-chesky) committed $500 million over five years to Airbnb.org, the nonprofit that houses disaster survivors and medical travelers: ten cents from every booking, company cash to cover any shortfall, and a goal of 1 million free nights a year [1][2].

Twenty-four hours later, [Politico reported that Airbnb and its nonprofit arm have spent at least $12.6 million since last year](https://www.politico.com/news/2026/10/29/la-mayor-airbnb-olympics-01137680) to become one of Los Angeles' top political donors, backing Mayor Karen Bass ahead of the 2028 Olympics [3].

## The dimes cover six cents of every charitable dollar

The pledge is dressed as a tip jar, and the arithmetic says otherwise. Airbnb booked 57 million stays and experiences in 2025, so ten cents a booking raises about $5.7 million a year against a $100 million a year commitment, roughly $28 million over five years at that volume [2].

[The Associated Press ran the fuller check](https://www.mercurynews.com/2026/10/29/philanthropy-airbnb/): the company would need 5 billion bookings over five years for the dimes to cover the $500 million alone, a sum that more than doubles everything Airbnb.org reported receiving between 2021 and 2025 [1]. About 94 cents of each charitable dollar is Airbnb's own cash, and the per-booking mechanism lets it read as customer-funded [1].

## In Los Angeles, the charity already works the other way

The clean version of philanthropy unravels where the regulator is also a beneficiary. In LA this summer, [Airbnb.org provided $1 million in emergency housing at Bass' request](https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/airbnb-is-spending-big-to-shape-la-politics-ahead-of-olympics/ar-AA2glsm8) for families of a Boyle Heights warehouse fire, a story that had become a campaign liability for the mayor [4].

That gift sits inside the $12.6 million, alongside $6.9 million in campaign contributions [per city filings](https://laist.com/news/politics/la-mayor-race-bass-raman-donors-campaign-finance-sosnick-airbnb), $3.7 million for the "Save Our Services" lobbying canvass, and $2.1 million behind city attorney candidate John McKinney, who is challenging the incumbent whose office sued Airbnb over wildfire price gouging [4][5].

## What $12.6 million has bought so far

The returns are visible. Bass put second-home and investment-property rentals through 2028 into her budget; the city planning department panned the idea; the Council rejected it in May [4].

Chesky told analysts Paris kept more than 50% more Airbnb homes after the 2024 Games and called megaevents "likely the very best way for us to add new supply" [4]. Bass' challenger, Council member Nithya Raman, calls it pay-to-play: "Bass delivers the policy Airbnb wants. Airbnb spends millions to elect Bass. Angelenos pay higher rents" [4]. A union poll found 53% of likely voters less likely to back an Airbnb-supported candidate [4].

## The defense, and what it does not answer

Chesky rejects the apology frame outright: "I don't like this idea that somehow you create a nonprofit to make up for or apologize for your core business," and he calls the commitment a number "shareholders can be comfortable with" [1].

The work is real: 1.6 million free nights in nearly 140 countries, including 78,000 nights with the nonprofit 211 LA after last year's fires [1][2]. But the humanitarian risk is dependence on a contested platform, a caution Copenhagen Business School's Karolina Mikołajewska-Zając raises as Spain and New York curb short-term rentals, and Inside Airbnb's Murray Cox says the fund ignores the housing crisis Airbnb helps create by taking residential units off the market [1][6].

## Tuesday prices the room

November 3 decides it: one poll has Bass and Raman in a dead heat, others had Raman ahead, and whoever wins inherits the price-gouging suit and the second-home bill [4]. A company writing $100 million a year into philanthropy and $12.6 million into one city's politics is buying room to be regulated rather than banned [4]. The dimes were never the story; the rules are. (Earlier this week The Inference counted [the election spending](https://theinference.org/article/airbnb-spent-7-1-million-on-los-angeles-elections-before-november-3-30-times-its-spending-since-2018), [the Vrbo fee rise](https://theinference.org/article/vrbo-lifts-its-cut-of-every-booking-to-12-while-airbnb-sells-the-search) and [the Lark hotel franchise](https://theinference.org/article/airbnb-turns-franchisor-with-lark-s-75-hotels-the-bill-lands-on-the-90-of-hosts-who-are-individuals); see /article/airbnb-spent-7-1-million-on-los-angeles-elections-before-november-3-30-times-its-spending-since-2018, /article/vrbo-lifts-its-cut-of-every-booking-to-12-while-airbnb-sells-the-search and /article/airbnb-turns-franchisor-with-lark-s-75-hotels-the-bill-lands-on-the-90-of-hosts-who-are-individuals [4].)

## Takeaway

Airbnb's $500 million crisis-housing pledge is funded at ten cents a booking, which covers only about $28 million at current volume; the rest is company cash, announced days after its Los Angeles political spending hit $12.6 million and before a mayoral vote that decides how the platform gets regulated.
