# Airbnb spent $7.1 million on Los Angeles elections before November 3, 30 times its spending since 2018

> Airbnb put $7.1 million into Los Angeles elections, 30 times its total there since 2018, to win a temporary Olympics supply window the city's own planner says raises no revenue. The votes land November 3.

On November 3, Los Angeles voters will decide who controls the hearing on the Vacation Rental Ordinance, a rule that would let residents rent second homes to tourists for the 2028 Olympics, up to 15,000 units, sunsetting in December 2028 [1]. Six days before the vote, [Capital & Main](https://capitalandmain.com/airbnb-pours-millions-into-l-a-city-elections-ahead-of-olympics) counted the money behind the curtain: $7.1 million from [Airbnb](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/airbnb) into the mayor's race and three council contests, roughly 30 times what the company has spent in all previous Los Angeles elections combined since 2018. [1] No other outlet picked it up.

## The receipt: $7.1 million against a $110 million argument

The Airbnb committee gave $6.1 million to Central City Association PACs, including $750,000 backing Mayor Karen Bass and $3.3 million for city attorney candidate John McKinney, and it has outspent the police union, historically the city's dominant donor, which spent about $4 million. [1] Over 18 months Airbnb also spent nearly $4.2 million lobbying, $3.7 million of it on the Save Our Services coalition of unions and chambers. [1] The prize is an Olympics-era supply window. [1]

*Chart: **Airbnb outspent the police union, and 30 times its own Los Angeles history** Bar chart comparing Airbnb's 2026 Los Angeles election spending of $7.1 million with the police union's roughly $4 million and Airbnb's combined Los Angeles spending since 2018 of about $0.24 million*

## The complication: the city's own planner calls the pitch wrong

Spokesman Justin Wesson told the council the ordinance could bring up to $110 million in bed taxes. [1] Planning director Vincent Bertoni wrote in 2021 and again in April that the law would generate no additional revenue, because second-home supply is too thin to attract new visitors. [1] Hoteliers, an illegal-listing count of 7,500 units, and challenger Nithya Raman all push the other way. [1]

## What an investor counts: a moat bought city by city

The market does not carry a consensus number for political spending as a recurring cost of market access. What the record shows: the largest domestic market now needs a seven-figure election operation per cycle, while a wider slate of [November 20 rules](https://theinference.org/article/airbnb-bans-required-chores-on-bookings-from-november-20-hosts-pay-for-the-50-to-200-clean) strips hosts of ID checks, rental agreements and chore requirements, keeping the liability on them. [1][2] Revenue keeps growing, 16.5% year over year last quarter, per [Airbnb's filings](https://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&CIK=0001559720), [3] but the direction is legible: the moat must be bought, city by city, election by election.

The city's planning director says the ordinance raises no revenue. Airbnb keeps buying the hearing anyway, and December takes the chairman who could block it off the council by term limit. [1] Watch November 3 [1].

## Takeaway

Airbnb is spending 30 times its Los Angeles history to win a 15,000-unit Olympics rental window, a sign that access to its biggest domestic market is now a recurring campaign expense.
