# Aixtron's orders doubled on AI lasers. Its 2026 forecast didn't move.

> Preliminary third-quarter orders of about €275 million, more than double a year earlier, sent shares in the German laser-equipment maker up about 10 percent on October 16. The 2026 outlook did not move, so what is being repriced is 2027.

## A 13 percent fall, then a 10 percent jump

[Aixtron](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/aixtron) (FSE: AIXA), whose machines grow the crystal layers inside laser diodes, [pre-reported third-quarter orders of about €275 million](https://www.investegate.co.uk/announcement/eqs/aixtron-se--0np9/eqs-news-aixtron-q3-2026-order-intake-and-o-/9825764) ($309 million) on October 15, against a €214.6 million consensus and €124.0 million a year earlier [1][7]. Operating profit was about €57 million at a 31 percent margin, versus 13 percent a year ago, on a gross margin of about 48 percent [1].

The market swung twice. The stock had fallen nearly 13 percent on October 15 in the AI selloff; the next morning it jumped about 10 percent on Tradegate, an off-exchange German trading venue, from a €30.98 close on Xetra, the main German exchange, to €34.14 [2][3]. The twelve-month range still runs €11.68 to €62.66 [3].

## A beat that moves nothing in 2026

Revenue, the line investors check first, was about €184 million, merely inside the guided range of €180 million plus or minus €20 million [1]. [The 2026 forecast did not move](https://www.semiconductor-today.com/news_items/2026/aug/aixtron-100826.shtml): about €560 million of revenue plus or minus €30 million, with a 17–20 percent operating margin [4]. The first quarter was a €22.3 million operating loss on €59.4 million of revenue, and JPMorgan's Craig McDowell expects a softer fourth-quarter gross margin as product mix normalizes, which caps the year inside that range [4][2].

Orders tell a different story. Booked when a customer commits, well before a tool is built, shipped and recognized as revenue, they ran €171.4 million, €214.5 million and €275 million across three quarters, about one and a half times third-quarter revenue [1][4][5]. Chief executive Felix Grawert aimed his own quote at next year: the intake "clearly strengthens our business prospects for 2027" [1].

## The shortage has moved one layer upstream

The book is one product story: laser tools for the optical links that carry data between AI data-center racks. Optoelectronics and communications equipment went from 9 percent of equipment revenue in the first half of 2025 to 54 percent a year later, while power electronics fell from 71 to 22 percent [4].

Downstream is sold out. [Lumentum](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/lumentum) chief executive Michael Hurlston said on October 9 that AI optical components are "completely sold out", with about 70 percent of demand for some products unmet into next year, and [Nvidia has put $2 billion each into Lumentum and Coherent](https://theinference.org/article/nvidia-invested-2-billion-in-coherent-insiders-sold-1-1-billion-in-a-year-and-bought-none) to lock up supply [6]. Aixtron sells those makers their machines, and the cash arrives early: advance payments hit €197 million by end-June, 43 percent of a €456.9 million backlog [4].

## The bull case is 2027, not 2026

The street's disagreement is about timing, not direction. [JPMorgan](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/jpmorgan-chase) [expects the pre-announcement to drive upgrades to both near- and medium-term estimates](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/aixtron-shares-rally-third-quarter-075408300.html) [7]. [Jefferies](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/jefferies) analyst Om Bakhda says the acceleration implies 2027 revenue well above current expectations [2]. Deutsche Bank alone stays at Hold, with a €44 target [3].

## October 29 opens the book

The full statement on October 29 brings nine-month figures and the first test of conversion [1]. The tell is whether backlog turns into revenue near a 48 percent gross margin.

The risk is concentration: one demand driver, AI lasers, carries the book, and a co-packaged-optics shift (building the laser into the switch chip rather than a separate module) or one customer's re-timing can push it out [5]. [Nvidia](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nvidia) is paying $2 billion a head to lock up laser makers; Aixtron's quarter says the shortage has moved one layer upstream, to the machines that make them [6].

## Takeaway

Preliminary Q3 orders of about €275 million, more than double a year earlier, lifted Aixtron shares about 10 percent, but with the 2026 forecast still at €560 million plus or minus €30 million, what the market is repricing is 2027.
