# Alcoa beat on a $4,527 aluminum price, then borrowed $2.6 billion to double down

> Alcoa cleared a consensus Wall Street had cut after its second-quarter miss, and the same day South32's holders approved the $5.6 billion aluminium sale Alcoa has funded with new debt. The stock is now a leveraged position on a metal price that increasingly swings on AI-infrastructure headlines.

[Alcoa](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/alcoa) reported the quarter Wall Street had marked down, beat it, then borrowed $2.6 billion to buy more of the metal that produced the beat [5][6]. [Adjusted earnings came in at $1.82 a share](https://www.marketscreener.com/news/alcoa-corporation-reports-third-quarter-2026-results-ce785dd3d18dfe25), against expectations near $1.50 after [the second quarter's miss](https://theinference.org/article/alcoa-reports-tonight-with-profit-marked-down-22-and-its-5-6-billion-south32-deal-already-funded) [5][6]. The relief is real, and so is the exposure: on the day the numbers landed, October 15, South32's shareholders approved selling their aluminium chain to Alcoa for up to $5.6 billion, funded with debt Alcoa has already raised [3][5].

## The plants earned the beat, the price set its size

The operational work deserves the credit. Aluminum production rose for a sixth consecutive quarter, the Alumar smelter restart in Brazil was completed, and alumina output climbed 11 percent as the Pinjarra refinery in Australia steadied [5][1]. But the beat came against a lowered bar. Revenue fell 7 percent from the second quarter, on lower aluminum shipments and lower realized prices [5]. Adjusted EBITDA dropped $112 million sequentially [5]. [An aluminum price around $4,527 a ton](https://www.itiger.com/news/1132819788) did the rest [2].

## The purchase converts a metal price into a balance-sheet position

AliGroup brings Alcoa the Worsley alumina stake in Australia, the Hillside smelter in South Africa, and Brazilian bauxite, alumina and smelting assets, with a cash consideration of about $3.1 billion [3][5]. [More than 99 percent of South32 proxy votes backed the sale](https://www.rttnews.com/3699136/south32-shareholders-back-up-to-5-6-bln-aluminium-asset-sale-to-alcoa.aspx) [8]. Alcoa raised the cash with senior notes due 2034 and 2036, lifted its full-year interest expense outlook to about $185 million, and told investors that debt reduction comes before buybacks [5][7]. Closing is expected in the first half of 2027 [5].

## Aluminum now trades on AI headlines

For anyone invested in the AI buildout, aluminum is part of that trade. [Copper and aluminum both fell on October 13](https://cryptobriefing.com/copper-aluminum-fall-ai-spending-concerns/) as investors questioned whether data-center construction can keep financing itself, and copper's run above $14,000 a ton has rested on AI and electrification demand [9]. Alcoa is even selling its Massena East site in New York for up to $315 million, with payments tied to how much data-center capacity the buyer permits and commissions [5]. The AI boom is already paying Alcoa's land bill.

## The company wrote its own fourth-quarter test

[Barclays](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/barclays) calls the stock cheap, [starting at Overweight with a $55 target, 36 percent above the shares](https://www.ad-hoc-news.de/boerse/news/nebenwerte/barclays-sets-usd-55-00-target-for-alcoa-stock-36-00-percent-above-price/70333166) [4]. The stock still trades 52 percent below its 52-week high [4]. [Alcoa's own guidance points the other way](https://www.theglobeandmail.com/investing/markets/stocks/AA/pressreleases/8098494/alcoa-q3-earnings-call-highlights-aligroup-deal-and-cost-pressures/): roughly $30 million of fourth-quarter headwind from raw materials and maintenance in the Aluminum segment, plus a similar hit from alumina costs [5][7]. If AI-led demand holds the price, the leverage pays holders through 2027; if it fades while the funded volume is still closing, the same holders carry the debt. Alcoa's earnings now rest on a price it does not control, on assets it has not yet paid for, and the fourth-quarter cost line, due before year-end, decides which camp is right.

## Takeaway

The beat was real, and so is the debt: Alcoa's $2.6 billion of new notes fund a $5.6 billion aluminium purchase, making the stock a leveraged bet on an aluminum price that now trades on AI headlines.
