# Ambarella's mystery bidder narrows to four names, and the stock hasn't noticed

> An alert from Betaville, the takeover-rumour service, says a third bidder bigger than Qualcomm and NXP combined has entered a late-stage auction for Ambarella, the edge-AI chip designer, with a deal expected within weeks. That size claim is checkable arithmetic, it leaves about four possible buyers, and the shares still trade below the company's own historical sales multiple.

The one checkable fact in [Ambarella](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/ambarella)'s takeover story is the mystery bidder's size. On October 16 traders cited an alert from Betaville, the takeover-rumour blog run by Ben Harrington, saying a third bidder bigger than [Qualcomm](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/qualcomm) and [NXP](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nxp) combined [had entered an auction the alert called late-stage, weeks from an announcement](https://seekingalpha.com/news/4653954-ambarella-may-be-seeing-interest-from-a-third-bidder---report) [1][2]. Betaville's "uncooked" items, like this one, are its lowest-reliability tier, and Ambarella's board has confirmed nothing [1]. "Bigger than both combined" is a test anyone can run, and it leaves about four names.

The rest is [background we covered on September 29](https://theinference.org/article/nxp-opens-a-sold-out-fab-in-singapore-and-chases-ambarella-on-the-same-balance-sheet): the Financial Times reported on July 31 that NXP Semiconductors, the Dutch automotive-chip maker, was in talks to buy Ambarella, and the stock jumped 16 percent that day, after which Betaville [said Qualcomm was working with banks](https://www.gurufocus.com/news/9128168/ambarella-amba-draws-new-ai-chip-bidder-amid-qualcommled-acqu acquisition-talks) [1]. The only new fact since that piece is the October 16 alert, which changes who can plausibly buy, and what they would get [1].

## The size clue narrows the field to four names

Qualcomm and NXP together [are worth about $248 billion](https://stockanalysis.com/stocks/industry/semiconductors/) [3]. Eight US-listed semiconductor companies clear that line [3]. Set aside the foundry, the two memory houses and the analog supplier, and the ones left, companies that design and sell their own processors, are [Nvidia](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nvidia), [Broadcom](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/broadcom), [AMD](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/amd) and [Intel](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/intel).

The alert describes the bidder as "one of the world's biggest AI chipmakers" [1], a phrase that fits the first three comfortably. Each of the four is worth many times Ambarella's $2.8 billion market value [2][3], so the obstacle is antitrust review, not cash. Holders of every name above the line own a piece of this story, not just Ambarella's.

## The X7 detaches Ambarella's AI from its cameras

What a buyer would get changed mid-process: on September 15 Ambarella [launched the X7, its first standalone accelerator](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/ai/articles/ambarella-launches-x7-first-standalone-130000692.html) [4][5]. Until then the company's CVflow neural-processing engine shipped only inside camera-oriented system-on-chip families, more than 50 million units in the field [4]. The X7 sells that same engine as a co-processor, attaching over a standard PCIe or USB link to a host processor from either mainstream family, [Arm](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/arm) or x86 [4].

The pitch is retrofit: fielded cameras, gateways and industrial controllers gain AI without a platform redesign [4][5]. Management [sizes the reachable market at $22.9 billion by 2032](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/ambarella-inc-q2-2027-earnings-123000837.html), most of it edge infrastructure [6]. The chip draws two to five watts [4], at or below the bottom of Nvidia's Jetson embedded line [7], and it [samples now with no price and no production date](https://diesignal.com/articles/ambarella-ships-x7-its-first-standalone-ai-accelerator-1a461c05) [4][5].

## The stock prices none of it

The turnaround underneath is real: [revenue has more than doubled from the 2023 trough, and last quarter's operating loss of 7.5 percent of sales was the best in three years](https://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&CIK=0001280263) [8].

*Chart: **Twelve quarters of recovery, and Ambarella has still not crossed zero** Line chart of Ambarella's quarterly operating margin from minus 83 percent in late 2023 to minus 7.5 percent in the July 2026 quarter, negative throughout*

*Operating loss as a share of revenue, by calendar quarter, from Ambarella's SEC filings. [8]*

The shares [trade at 6.5 times sales, below the company's own historical median of 8](https://stockanalysis.com/stocks/amba/) [9], and insiders sold $17 million of stock over the past year while buying none [9]. The alert may still be wrong. Its clue is the only part of the story anyone can verify, and it points at four names on a list anyone can reproduce. A market that believed its own rumour would not leave the target below its own history, and earnings on November 24, if no deal lands first, is where that gets settled [2].

## Takeaway

The only checkable fact in the Ambarella story is the bidder's size, and it points to Nvidia, Broadcom, AMD or Intel; yet the shares still trade below Ambarella's own historical sales multiple, so the market is not paying for the rumour.
