# AMD bought Fei-Fei Li's World Labs for $8.2 billion in stock as data center sales jumped 97%

> AMD's Q3 filing named Fei-Fei Li's World Labs inside a results release, $8.2 billion in stock, on the day the inference layer that serves the lab marked at $16 billion on $800 million of revenue. The margin, fal's founder says, sits with compute.

Two documents landed on November 3, 2026, and priced two different layers of the AI stack [1]. [AMD](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/amd)'s [quarterly 8-K](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/2488/000000248826000188/0000002488-26-000188-index.htm) named its $8.2 billion all-stock purchase of [World Labs](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/world-labs), Fei-Fei Li's spatial-intelligence lab, inside a results release that also carried a record quarter: revenue of $13.38 billion, up 45%, and Data Center sales of $8.55 billion, up 97% [1].

The same day, [fal](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/fal), the inference platform that serves image and video models, [raised $1.3 billion at a $16 billion valuation](https://siliconangle.com/2026/11/03/generative-media-inference-startup-fal-raises-1-3b-at-a-16b-valuation/), about twenty times its $800 million of annualized revenue, with [Nvidia](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nvidia) taking a strategic stake [2].

## The bought lab is a customer of the layer that printed

Bessemer, which led fal's Series F, [lists World Labs among the companies that have moved production volume to fal](https://www.bvp.com/news/investing-in-fal-the-generative-media-company), alongside [Adobe](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/adobe), Canva, [Shopify](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/shopify) and [Amazon](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/amazon) [3]. So the chipmaker paid fifteen times its own quarterly free cash flow ($554 million, down 64% from the second quarter as inventory built toward the Q4 ramp [1]) for the model layer of a stack whose serving layer was marking near $16 billion while AMD signed. Marble, World Labs' first product, charges pennies per output: [$5 for a refined 3D splat, 50 cents for a draft](https://spatialinsiders.com/stories/world-labs-atlas-gaussian-splats) [4].

## Where the margin sits, by the founders who sell both

fal's chief executive Burkay Gür says the early consensus has reversed: margins in the application layer sit near zero, and "[you can only create margin if you are in the compute path](https://www.sourcery.vc/p/breaking-fal-raises-165b-in-series)" [5]. Nvidia collects on both sides of this trade, holding a stake in fal and selling the GPUs beneath it, and [it paid $13 billion for Hugging Face](https://xix.ai/es/ainews/how-amds-world-labs-acquisition-shapes-ais-future.html), the model platform World Labs is now positioned against [6]. [Fireworks AI](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/fireworks-ai) marked at $17.5 billion in July [2].

*Chart: **AMD's free cash flow fell 64% the quarter it committed $8.2 billion in stock** Line chart of AMD quarterly free cash flow from Q3 2024 to Q3 2026, falling from $1.56 billion in Q2 2026 to $554 million in Q3 2026.*

*AMD's free cash flow fell 64% the quarter it committed $8.2 billion in stock [1][9]*

AMD holders should price the $8.2 billion as a roadmap purchase, not a revenue line; no source attaches revenue to World Labs, and whether its models keep running on rival silicon after close is unpriced [7]. That is the fair counterpoint: AMD's quarter was real, the stock rose 8% after hours, and [the Q4 guide of $17 billion implies 66% growth](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/11/03/amd-amd-q3-earnings-report-2026-.html) [7].

*Chart: **The lab AMD bought marks below every AI platform print of 2026** Column chart of 2026 AI platform valuation marks: World Labs at $8.2 billion, Hugging Face at $13 billion, fal at $16 billion, Fireworks AI at $17.5 billion.*

Both deals close by the end of 2026, with [Li joining as chief scientist reporting to Lisa Su](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/advanced-micro-devices-amd-said-021404113.html) [8]. What to watch: whether World Labs' serving bill stays on fal, and on whose GPUs. [Our October 28 piece priced this deal at $117 million a head](https://theinference.org/article/amd-buys-fei-fei-li-s-world-labs-for-8-2-billion-117-million-a-head-as-rivals-give-it-away); the new facts since are the filing itself, Li's seat, and fal's customer list naming the lab [8].

## Takeaway

AMD bought the model layer at the bottom of 2026's platform valuations the same quarter its data center sales nearly doubled and its free cash flow halved.
