# AMD buys Fei-Fei Li's World Labs for $8.2 billion, $117 million a head, as rivals give it away

> Paying $117 million per head for Fei-Fei Li's startup makes sense only if spatial intelligence reshapes silicon from scratch.

## AMD pays for people, not commercial software

[AMD](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/amd) has [agreed to buy World Labs](https://theinference.org/article/amd-is-buying-the-ai-lab-it-funded-in-february-and-paying-with-8-2-billion-of-its-own-stock), the spatial-intelligence lab founded by Fei-Fei Li, for about $8.2 billion in stock, a deal expected to close by the end of 2026 that puts Li at AMD's executive table as chief scientist, reporting to CEO [Lisa Su](https://theinference.org/markets/people/lisa-su) [2]. The lab employs about 70 people [2].

Spread across them, the price runs to roughly $117 million a head, and neither company has disclosed what the commercial side earns, including Marble, [World Labs](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/world-labs)' capture-to-3D product [3]. AMD's Vamsi Boppana said the chipmaker was "blown away" by a roadmap it has not shown anyone outside the building [3]. The people were already expensive: [seven months earlier](https://theinference.org/article/amd-pays-8-2-billion-for-fei-fei-li-s-world-labs-as-robot-training-data-orders-jump-as-much-as-a-hundredfold), AMD itself backed a $1 billion funding round for World Labs at a $5 billion valuation, with [Nvidia](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nvidia) in the same round [6].

## Rivals give away what Marble sells

On October 27, [Google DeepMind](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/google-deepmind) shipped Genie 4, its most photorealistic world model yet, with real-time audio, mid-simulation edits and consistent scenes of up to two minutes, double its predecessor's limit; it reaches Google AI Ultra subscribers in the coming weeks [1]. The same day, SpAItial, a startup built on a $13 million seed round, launched Echo-3, an iPhone app that turns a short phone video into metric-scale photorealistic 3D reconstructions, free to download and priced in credits [4].

That is the same capture-to-3D job Marble is known for, and a seed-stage rival is selling it at consumer prices [5][1]. The field is consolidating in kind: [Amazon](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/amazon) is reportedly in talks to buy Decart for about $7 billion, a company with more than 60 employees [5], and [TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/27/googles-genie-4-world-model-adds-audio-more-realistic-worlds-and-real-time-steering/) counts [Rivian](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/rivian)'s purchase of Third Dimension in the same wave [1].

*Chart: **The live world-model prices tower over the last cycle's AI chip deals** Bar chart comparing acquisition and reported deal values: AMD acquiring World Labs for 8.2 billion dollars, Amazon reportedly negotiating Decart at 7 billion, Intel buying Habana Labs for 2 billion in 2019 and Nervana Systems for 0.4 billion in 2016.*

*Deal values in billions of dollars. AMD/World Labs is a definitive all-stock agreement; Amazon/Decart is reported talks, marked as an estimate; Intel figures as reported at the time. Sources: The Fast Mode, Crypto Briefing, EO. [2][5][3]*

## The silicon gamble rests on co-design

AMD is explicit that it is not buying the product market; it is buying model researchers close enough to its chip designers to shape silicon years before it ships [3]. The chip industry carries a warning about overlapping teams under one owner.

[Intel](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/intel) bought Nervana Systems for about $400 million, then Habana Labs for $2 billion, and killed Nervana's training chip about two months after saying Habana would stay independent [3]. Li's seat next to Su is the built-in defense. But AMD already sounds more careful than Li on open models: Su says there will be "both [open as well as proprietary](https://theinference.org/article/amd-signed-an-8-2-billion-deal-and-cannot-say-what-it-costs-in-shares)" where Li promised open models, and Boppana declined to call the deal an open-model strategy at all [3].

## What to watch at close

The close by the end of 2026, the Decart signature that lands against the $8.2 billion mark [5], and whether open World Labs models still run on a competitor's silicon once AMD owns them [3]. The roadmap nobody outside AMD has seen is now the only product it paid for, in the same week the market showed what it charges for the kind everyone can see [1][4].

## Takeaway

AMD's $8.2 billion stock purchase of World Labs values 70 researchers at $117 million each, betting on chip co-design even as rival world models commoditize consumer 3D capture.
