# Amkor's $2.5-3 billion AI packaging bet, partly prepaid by Nvidia, gets its first test October 26

> Amkor raised 2026 capex to $2.5-3 billion to package AI chips, and October has knocked its stock down with the memory names. The October 26 third-quarter print is the first evidence on whether the new plants fill before the depreciation lands.

[Amkor Technology](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/amkor-technology), the largest US-headquartered OSAT, a company that packages and tests other firms' chips [1], has [lifted 2026 capital spending to between $2.5 billion and $3 billion on AI packaging demand](https://marketiv.app/news/amkor-lifts-2026-capex-to-2-5-3-billion-on-ai-packaging-demand-07102026) [2]. October's tape disagrees with the bet: the stock [closed at $48.11 on October 12, down more than 5% in a month while its sector gained](https://au.finance.yahoo.com/news/amkor-technology-amkr-declines-more-210004821.html) [3].

The doubt aims at the wrong link. AI's need for advanced packaging is the observed end of the chain; the link nobody has measured is how fast the new plants fill, and the third-quarter report on October 26 is its first reading [3].

## Every AI accelerator passes through a packager

A large AI chip leaves the wafer fab as several dies and memory stacks that must be bonded into one package, a step that, as [the announcement of Amkor's Nvidia partnership](https://ir.amkor.com/news-releases/news-release-details/amkor-technology-announces-strategic-partnership-nvidia-expand) puts it, enables the performance, energy efficiency and system-level integration AI infrastructure requires [1]. Designers therefore lock packagers in early: Amkor counts 11 customers across its 2.5D programs, which mount dies side by side on an interposer, plus 10 active engagements in high-density fan-out [4]. The pipeline is anchored by a 10-year advanced-packaging agreement with [TSMC](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/tsmc) [4], the world's leading chipmaker [2].

June-quarter revenue rose 26%, a record for that quarter [4]. Its data-center computing line is expected up nearly 30% this quarter as the largest of those programs, a data-center CPU job, ramps [4].

*Chart: **Capex has climbed to a series high while revenue sits just below its record** Line chart of Amkor's quarterly revenue and capital spending from Q3 2023 to Q2 2026; capex climbs to a series high of $0.435 billion in Q2 2026 while revenue reaches $1.898 billion, just under its Q3 2025 peak.*

*Quarterly revenue and capital expenditure, US$ billions, Q3 2023 to Q2 2026, from Amkor's SEC filings. [8]*

## The concrete is already under contract

The capacity being bought is physical and mostly committed. In Korea, the contractor Dongbu starts work this month on Amkor's [Building D in Gwangju](https://theinference.org/article/korea-unblocked-amkor-s-next-factory-in-two-days-nvidia-s-1-5-billion-arrives-in-2027), [a 274 billion won expansion running to June 2028](https://rallies.ai/news/dongbu-wins-27427-billion-won-amkor-korea-plant-expansion-contract-d9cbce67f6030ce9) [5]. In Arizona, the Peoria campus is [a $7 billion two-phase build, billed as the first high-volume advanced-packaging plant on US soil](https://www.gpec.org/news/press-releases/amkor-technology-breaks-ground-7-billion-peoria-campus/) [6]. Production is due in early 2028 [6]. The site sits beside TSMC's Arizona fabs so US-made wafers can be packaged end to end, and it carries up to 3,000 jobs [6].

## The customer has prepaid part of the bill

[Nvidia](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nvidia) has shifted a slice of the cost onto itself: [a $1.5 billion multi-year packaging and development agreement](https://theinference.org/article/nvidia-pays-1-5-billion-toward-amkor-s-us-packaging-build-amkor-s-depreciation-bill-starts-in-2027), announced in July, whose prepayment supports the expansion of Amkor's US advanced-packaging capacity [1]. That part of the bet is carried by a customer; the rest sits with shareholders. Management named the residual itself: customers generally give no binding long-term commitments, and the Arizona ramp can weigh on margins for years through underutilization and depreciation [4]. If AI packaging demand pauses, the plants and their depreciation still land on earnings.

## The first receipt lands on October 26

October's selloff was a memory story: [claims from the Chinese memory maker CXMT of denser DDR5 server modules](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/lattice-semiconductor-amkor-himax-teradyne-003103146.html), and a strike-authorization vote at [Micron](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/micron), the memory-chip maker whose Taiwan sites anchor its DRAM and high-bandwidth memory output, knocked chipmakers down together [7]. Neither, on its face, bears on Amkor's packaging orders, and CXMT has yet to prove it can make its chips in commercial volumes [7].

## The bar is $2 billion at 19 times earnings

Amkor's own bar for the quarter is $1.95–2.05 billion of revenue at 18.5–19.5% gross margin [4]. Consensus has not moved in a month: $0.79 of earnings on about $2 billion of revenue [3]. At just under 19 times forward earnings, against an industry average near 38, the market already prices Amkor as a factory that must earn its capacity [3]. A beat with utilization detail shows the spending is backed by orders; a soft utilization number puts it straight onto the margin line.

*Chart: **The Q3 bar is a gross margin above any quarter in three years** Line chart of Amkor's gross margin by quarter from Q3 2023 to Q2 2026, ranging from 11.9 to 16.8 percent, with Q3 2026 guidance of 18.5 to 19.5 percent drawn above every actual quarter shown.*

*Gross margin by quarter, percent, Q3 2023 to Q2 2026, from Amkor's SEC filings; Q3 2026 is company guidance, with a range of 18.5–19.5%. [4][9]*

The demand end of this chain has a customer's cash behind it. The fill rate has never been measured. The October 26 report is the first measurement, and if the new lines fill, Amkor will have earned the industry's multiple.

## Takeaway

Nvidia's $1.5 billion prepayment carries part of Amkor's $2.5-3 billion AI packaging bet; the October 26 quarter is the first test of whether the new plants fill before the depreciation lands.
