# Appian's fastest-growing line was legacy licenses, up about 56%, with cash flow at negative $15.4 million

> GAAP profit rose to $12.3 million while operating cash flow ran to negative $15.4 million, and Q4 guidance has revenue growth stepping down to 15–17% from Q3's 25%. The 16.6% post-print jump to $58.10 prices the cloud AI story, not the quarter's fastest-growing line.

[Appian](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/appian) beat hard this morning: [revenue of $234.6 million, up 25%](https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2026/11/05/3396285/0/en/appian-announces-third-quarter-2026-financial-results.html), and non-GAAP earnings of $0.51 a share against estimates near $0.33, sending the stock up 16.6% to $58.10 [1][5]. The composition shows a quarter whose fastest growth came from the oldest part of the product line. Cloud subscriptions grew 20% to $136.4 million, but total subscriptions grew 28% to $187.8 million, which means the non-cloud term-license line reached roughly $51 million against roughly $33 million a year ago, up about 56% [1].

That license line is the way government and on-premise buyers purchase, and it grew almost three times as fast as the cloud line the AI story rests on.

*Chart: **Term licenses grew 56% while cloud grew 20%, so the legacy line added more growth than the cloud line did** Column chart of Appian subscription revenue in Q3 2025 and Q3 2026: cloud subscriptions rose from about $113.7 million to $136.4 million, while non-cloud term licenses rose from about $33 million to about $51 million.*

## Profit rose while cash went out the door

GAAP net income rose to $12.3 million, yet operating cash flow was negative $15.4 million against a positive $18.7 million a year earlier, and cash fell from $135.8 million to $47.3 million since year end [1]. The swing suggests revenue booked ahead of cash collection, though the same statement holds other draws: Appian repurchased $83 million of stock in the nine months, drew $200 million of borrowings and repaid $241.6 million of debt, so it refinanced while spending rather than borrowed to spend [1].

*Chart: **Appian's revenue hit $234.6 million in Q3, its fastest quarter yet** Appian's quarterly total revenue from Q1 2024 through Q3 2026, with the Q4 2026 guidance midpoint shown as an estimate, in millions of US dollars.*

## Existing cloud customers are more than doubling their spend

Cloud net annualized recurring revenue expansion hit 120%, meaning existing customers are more than doubling their cloud spend, and billings rose 33% to $259.6 million [1][5]. That is the mechanism investors are paying for: automation plus AI agents makes each existing deployment more valuable, and customers are paying for it now.

## The guide says the license bump may not repeat

Shipping agents does not itself change a government's operations; the work of wiring them into procurement, case-management and compliance workflows is what Appian and its services partners still have to do, and the guide says the license bump may not repeat. Q4 guidance has total revenue up 15% to 17% against Q3's 25%, and adjusted EBITDA guided to $30 million to $33 million against Q3's $43.4 million, so management itself is not treating this quarter's margin as the run rate even as cloud accelerates to 22% to 24% growth [1].

The licenses point to the same buyer class we reported on November 2, when the Army signed $919 million of low-code contract ceilings and Appian's $500 million share carried no drawn dollar; today's release again discloses no federal revenue split [1]. So watch the 8:30 a.m. call: if management pins the license jump on government draws against those ceilings, the beat is a leading indicator of federal automation spend [1].

If they cannot, the quarter's fastest growth was legacy purchasing, and the $58 price now assumes the cloud line, not the licenses, is the business.

## Takeaway

Appian beat and the stock jumped 16.6%, but the quarter's fastest growth came from the legacy term-license line, up about 56%, while operating cash flow swung to negative $15.4 million and the Q4 guide steps revenue growth down to 15–17%.
