# Apple added $33 billion of component commitments and guided December margin down to 45% to 46% on memory

> Apple added $33 billion to component commitments in one quarter and still guided margins lower: the AI memory squeeze is being split between customers, Apple's own margin and the memory suppliers, and January's report decides who carries the rest.

[Apple](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/apple) added $33 billion to its component purchase commitments in a single quarter [1], and chief executive [John Ternus](https://theinference.org/markets/people/john-ternus) called memory pricing "unprecedented" on the November 2 call [1]. [The annual filing](https://247wallst.com/investing/2026/11/04/apple-has-89-7-billion-in-purchase-obligations-and-most-of-it-comes-due-within-a-year/) shows what the money is: commitments to manufacturing partners, paid as parts and services are delivered, with most of the $89.7 billion total due within a year [2].

Likely it buys certainty of supply rather than volume, which IDC says now takes long-term agreements from every large buyer [1]: a place near the front of the memory line. The AI buildout now sets the price of an iPhone, and January's report decides who carries the rest of the bill.

## AI servers now eat the memory capacity phones used to get

High-bandwidth memory, the stacked chips packaged beside AI accelerators, consumes roughly three times the factory capacity of an equal amount of standard DRAM [3]. As the big memory makers Samsung, [SK hynix](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/sk-hynix) and [Micron](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/micron) chase that business, conventional memory tightens, and cloud builders have signed supply agreements running to 2030 and 2031 [4]. Memory prices have climbed as much as 400% in two years [1].

Every AI data center bids against the phone in your pocket for the same silicon, and the phone is losing: IDC, the market research firm, [counted a record 22% fall in smartphone shipments last quarter](https://www.fastcompany.com/91624656/ais-memory-chip-crunch-is-crushing-the-smartphone-market) as makers raised prices and dropped budget models [4].

## Apple is buying its way up the line and billing customers for part of it

Purchase obligations stood at $57 billion in June [2]. By the September filing they reached $89.7 billion, and inventory hit $14.5 billion as Apple stockpiled memory ahead of further increases [5]. Customers already carry part of the bill: the iPhone 18 Pro rose $100 in September, after Macs and iPads rose by as much as $300 in June [6].

Even so, [December gross margin is guided to 45% to 46%, down from 47.9%](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/articles/apple-boosts-purchase-commitments-33b-135100000.html), mostly on memory [1]. iPad revenue fell 10% because memory shortages capped supply, while iPhone still grew 17% on prices already raised, so demand has not broken [5][7]. The volume risk is unresolved too: Mac and iPad supply stays constrained through a December quarter guided to only 7% to 10% revenue growth [8][7].

*Chart: **Two years of gross margin gains handed back in one guide** Apple's quarterly gross margin from the fourth calendar quarter of 2024 through the September quarter of 2026, with the December 2026 quarter shown as the midpoint of management's 45 to 46 percent guide.*

*Reported quarters from Apple's SEC filings; the December bar is the midpoint of management's 45% to 46% guide, marked as an estimate. [10][1]*

## The pricing power sits with the memory sellers

Phil Solis, a research director at IDC, put it plainly: memory scarcity "has given memory suppliers the upper hand" [1]. SK hynix, whose record quarter [we traced last week](https://theinference.org/article/sk-hynix-banks-its-first-100-trillion-won-quarter-at-an-80-margin-as-apple-cuts-iphone-orders), says its output is effectively sold out through 2029 [3], and Micron just closed a quarter at an 87% gross margin [2]. Apple carries the risk from here.

*Chart: **Micron's gross margin is up 60 points in two years; Apple's is 1.6 points higher** Line chart of Apple's and Micron's quarterly gross margins from the second calendar quarter of 2024 through the third calendar quarter of 2026, Micron climbing from about 27 percent to 87 percent while Apple stays between 46 and 50 percent.*

*Quarterly gross margin, percent of revenue, by calendar quarter, from each company's SEC filings. Micron's fiscal quarter ends within the calendar quarter shown; figures retrieved 6 November 2026. [11][12]*

The cheap buffer of carry-in inventory, memory bought in earlier quarters at lower prices, thins as it runs out, and Ternus says prices keep rising beyond December [1]. TrendForce, a market research firm, [sees conventional DRAM contract prices up another 10% to 15% this quarter](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/apple-unprecedented-memory-warning-adds-153146150.html) [9], and chief operating officer [Sabih Khan](https://theinference.org/markets/people/sabih-khan) would not say whether device prices rise again [8]. The threat to the suppliers is Chinese capacity: [ChangXin Memory Technologies](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/cxmt), China's largest DRAM maker, is [entering AI memory](https://theinference.org/article/apple-s-new-ceo-keeps-chinese-dram-on-the-table-as-cxmt-posts-a-sevenfold-quarter) with yields far behind the leaders, a late-decade problem rather than this cycle's [9].

January's report is the test. Margin near the guide means customers keep paying; below it, Apple eats the increase.

## Takeaway

Apple added $33 billion of component commitments in one quarter and guided December gross margin down to 45% to 46% on memory costs; January's report decides who carries the rest of the bill.
