# Arista's $235 billion moat meets its most credible imitator five days before its earnings

> Apstra founder Mansour Karam's Aria Networks surfaced in Berlin with $125 million and ex-Cisco networking chief Jonathan Davidson on its board, claiming a $300 billion prize. The software-led playbook Arista rode to $235 billion is being run back at it, and the November 3 earnings print is the first market test of what the challenger is worth.

## The founder who sold Apstra to Juniper is back, copying Arista on purpose

In Berlin on October 29, at a showcase alongside [Nvidia](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nvidia)'s GTC event, Mansour Karam showed off Aria Networks, the AI-networking startup he leads after selling his last company, Apstra, to Juniper Networks for $190 million [1][2]. The pitch was blunt: Aria intends to be "better than the best switch operating system out there" [1].

[SDxCentral](https://www.sdxcentral.com/analysis/meet-aria-the-startup-taking-on-networking-giants-to-emulate-arista/) frames the company as built to emulate [Arista Networks](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/arista-networks), the software-led vendor that [turned $100 invested ten years ago into $3,501.87](https://www.benzinga.com/news/26/10/62724666/here-s-how-much-100-invested-arista-networks-10-years-ago-would-be-worth-today) and now carries a $235.11 billion market capitalization [1][3]. Karam did not soften the target: "As long as you're not buying everything from Nvidia, we compete" [1].

## The incumbent walks into earnings with a falling stock and a stretched valuation

Arista reports third-quarter results on November 3 after the close, with [revenue guided to about $3.3 billion](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/down-20-highs-arista-networks-092939549.html) and fiscal 2026 guidance raised to $12.6 billion [4]. The stock is down 9.8% in a month and trades near 45 times fiscal 2026 consensus earnings; after its first-quarter print this year, even a 7.73% beat sent the shares down 13.6% [4].

CEO [Jayshree Ullal](https://theinference.org/markets/people/jayshree-ullal) says price increases to offset [rising memory and silicon costs](https://theinference.org/article/arista-faces-a-9-7-billion-parts-bill-after-insiders-sold-740-8-million-of-stock) arrive "only towards the end of the year or more like next year," pressure examined in [Cisco puts the memory bill on the price list, and Arista's quarter decides if the stack can pay](https://theinference.org/article/cisco-puts-the-memory-bill-on-the-price-list-and-arista-s-quarter-decides-if-the-stack-can-pay) [4].

## Aria's stack was designed for AI factories from the start

Aria [raised $125 million this year from Sutter Hill Ventures, Valor Equity Partners and Atreides Management](https://www.sdxcentral.com/analysis/meet-aria-the-startup-taking-on-networking-giants-to-emulate-arista/), employs north of 80 people and is entering Europe, the Middle East and Africa [1][2]. Its switches run on [Broadcom](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/broadcom) Tomahawk 5 and 6 silicon with 800G options, a 1.6T version due later this year [1].

On top sits an operating system built on SONiC, the open networking stack, pulling microsecond-resolution telemetry from switches, cables, optics, network interface cards (NICs) and hosts, more than 160 parameters from optical transceivers alone, sold as one integrated package rather than a bolted-on manager [1]. Early tester Gatti Services logged three weeks of broadly positive trials, with rack setup in hours and API fixes delivered overnight [1].

Ex-[Cisco](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/cisco) networking EVP Jonathan Davidson [joined the board the same week](https://www.sdxcentral.com/news/former-cisco-networking-evp-joins-board-at-ai-network-startup-aria/); Karam credits him with leading the engineering behind nearly every major network operating system [2]. Karam sizes the prize at $300 billion, with networking at 10% to 20% of AI infrastructure spending [1].

## Arista's moat currently holds Meta's supercluster

The strongest answer is Arista's order book. [Meta's latest engineering post](https://www.sdxcentral.com/news/meta-taps-arista-and-broadcom-jericho3-to-stitch-prometheus-supercluster-together/) shows the super-spine aggregating its roughly one-million-GPU Prometheus supercluster runs on Arista 7800-series chassis housing Broadcom Jericho3 silicon [5].

Arista counts more than 100 cumulative customers for Etherlink, its AI networking portfolio, and targets at least $3.5 billion in AI fabric revenue this year, while management expects component shortages to persist until 2028, which caps how fast any challenger can displace an installed base [4]. Aria has named no customer larger than the three-week Gatti test [1].

Davidson marks the stakes himself: "every point of GPU utilization and every token per second maps directly to revenue" [2].

## What November 3 decides

The earnings print prices the risk: Q3 revenue against the $3.3 billion guide, gross margin against Q2's 63.4%, and whether guidance climbs past $12.6 billion [4]. Arista's growth has accelerated even as the challenger arrived, 27.5% year over year in Q3 2025 and 37.7% in Q2 2026 [6].

*Chart: **Growth dipped through 2025, then accelerated to 37.7% as the challenger arrived** Column chart of Arista Networks year-over-year revenue growth by quarter from Q1 2025 through Q2 2026, holding in the high 20s through 2025 and then climbing to 35.1% and 37.7% in the first two quarters of 2026.*

Aria's tell is slower: whether an EMEA reference customer grows into a name the market knows [1]. Karam insists independence, not a second sale, is the plan [1]. Last time, that independence ended with a $190 million check from Juniper [2].

## Takeaway

Aria Networks, founded by Apstra creator Mansour Karam with ex-Cisco networking chief Jonathan Davidson on its board, is running Arista's own software-led playbook back at it with $125 million raised; Arista's November 3 print, guided near $3.3 billion in revenue against a 63.4% Q2 gross margin, is the first market test of what the challenger is worth.
