# ASE lifts its 2026 capex plan to $10.5 billion, and its 18 analysts' average target now sits below the price

> ASE says 2026 LEAP packaging revenue is running above a target it had already raised to $3.5 billion, and it is adding $2 billion of capex. After a 197% run, the 18-analyst average target sits below the last close, which makes October 29 earnings a test of execution, not demand.

AI packaging demand is outrunning the company that sells it. ASE Technology, the world's largest provider of outsourced chip assembly and test services [4], says 2026 revenue from its LEAP advanced packaging business is running ahead of the $3.5 billion target it had already raised from more than $2.6 billion, and it is [adding another $2.0 billion to this year's capital spending](https://www.ad-hoc-news.de/boerse/news/corporate-news/ase-technology-plans-usd-2-billion-leap-expansion-ase-technology-stock-slips-1-93-percent/70256251) [1][2]. The New York-listed shares slipped about 2% on October 7 anyway [2][3].

## Demand outran the forecast, and capex followed

The cash is moving before the ink dries. ASE plans $10.5 billion of 2026 capital spending, almost double 2025's $5.5 billion [4]. [Since September 30 its subsidiaries have signed facility engineering contracts](https://theinference.org/article/ase-spent-nt-10-billion-in-three-weeks-building-the-packaging-slots-amd-cannot-get) worth NT$2.36 billion, NT$2.04 billion, NT$1.4 billion, NT$1.10 billion and NT$553 million, alongside machinery purchases from Teradyne and Tazmo [5]. August consolidated revenue reached $2.556 billion, up 10.7% year over year [2]. The second quarter told the same story: ATM segment revenue rose 36% to TWD 126.1 billion and ATM gross margin hit 27.3%, from 21.9% [1].

*Chart: **Quarterly capex has climbed from $0.4 billion to $2.5 billion in three years** Column chart of ASE Group's quarterly capital spending from Q3 2023 to Q2 2026, rising from about $0.4 billion a quarter to $2.5 billion in Q2 2026.*

*Capital spending by quarter, USD billions, from ASE Group's SEC filings [9]. First-half 2026 spending of $3.9 billion is already close to the whole of 2025's $5.5 billion; the new plan lifts the full-year 2026 target to $10.5 billion. [9]*

*Chart: **Consolidated gross margin has risen six straight quarters** Line chart of ASE Technology's consolidated gross margin from Q3 2023 to Q2 2026, rising from about 16% to 21%, with the climb steepening from Q4 2025.*

*Consolidated GAAP gross margin, percent of revenue, quarterly, from ASE's SEC filings. Management's above-30% goal for Q4 2026 covers the ATM segment, a separate measure. [6]*

On consolidated GAAP numbers the climb is six quarters old, [from 16.8% in early 2025 to 21.0% in the second quarter of 2026](https://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&CIK=0001122411) [6].

## The average target sits below the price

Here is what should not be true. Eighteen analysts rate the stock a Buy, yet their average target of TWD 727.53 sits below the TWD 732.00 close after a 197.01% year-to-date run [5]. [Morgan Stanley's October 6 raise](https://www.ad-hoc-news.de/boerse/news/corporate-news/ase-technology-holding-stock-gets-a-higher-morgan-stanley-target/70257042), to TWD 308 from TWD 228, is less than half the Taipei price, a gap the relay leaves unexplained [3][5]. The shares trade at 26.32 times forward earnings against an industry at 14.24, after a 26.9% month that nearly tripled the industry's return [1].

## Execution, not demand, is the trade now

Management named the constraint itself: not demand, but how fast equipment gets installed across 13 greenfield and 8 brownfield projects meant to carry capacity through 2028 and into 2029 [1]. The bulls counter with customers, [AMD](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/amd), [Broadcom](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/broadcom) and [Nvidia](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nvidia) among them, and with [TSMC](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/tsmc)'s overflowing CoWoS orders spilling onto ASE as AMD's Venice chips ramp [4]. Rival Amkor signed a $1.5 billion packaging partnership with Nvidia in July [7]. The checkpoint is [Q3 earnings on October 29](https://ir.aseglobal.com/) [8], with the street pencilling $7.21 billion of revenue, up 31% [4]. Customers pay in scarce slots; late buyers of the ADR pay in valuation.

## Takeaway

ASE's demand problem is solved; its execution and valuation problem is not. With 2026 capex at $10.5 billion and LEAP revenue above a raised $3.5 billion target, October 29 earnings will test delivery, while the 18-analyst average target already sits below the price.
