# ASE Technology beat its packaging guidance as insiders sold 33 times; its margin test lands October 29

> ASE Technology, the world's largest independent chip packager, grew third-quarter revenue past its own guidance, then fell as much as 6.6 percent in the October 15 AI selloff. The margin report due October 29 will show how much of the boom is becoming profit.

[ASE Technology](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/ase-group) Holding (NYSE: ASX), which describes itself as the leading provider of semiconductor assembly and test services [2], said on October 12 that [third-quarter net revenue reached NT$244.16 billion in New Taiwan dollars, about US$7.6 billion](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1122411/000095010326015458/dp254866_6k.htm) [1]. Revenue was up 44.8 percent from a year earlier, and the assembly-and-test business, the lines that package and test other companies' chips, grew 18.7 percent from the second quarter in US-dollar terms, past the 11 to 13 percent management guided in July [1][3]. Three days later the stock fell as much as 6.6 percent in intraday trading and ended 5.5 percent lower at $41.89, tracking a global selloff in AI-linked shares; ASE had no bad news of its own [4][5][6].

## The beat is AI-shaped, at a step no chip can skip

Every AI accelerator leaves the foundry as bare silicon and has to be packaged and tested before it ships, and that step is ASE's business. [TSMC](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/tsmc), the world's largest contract chipmaker, reported record third-quarter profit the same week the selloff reached it [6]. Computing has climbed to 30 percent of ASE's assembly-and-test revenue, from about a quarter a year earlier [2]. ASE is borrowing to keep up: [second-quarter payments for property and equipment ran ahead of operating cash flow](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1122411/000095010326011351/dp250868_6k.htm), and net borrowing covered the gap [2].

*Chart: **ASE's revenue swung from declines in 2024 to a record AI-driven quarter** Column chart of ASE quarterly net revenue in US dollars from Q3 2023 to Q3 2026, rising from around $4.8 billion to a record $7.6 billion.*

## The October 15 selloff repriced AI borrowing costs

Stronger-than-expected US inflation raised rate expectations and technology shares sold off worldwide: South Korea's KOSPI plunged more than 8 percent, and the cost of insuring debt at AI-linked borrowers such as [Oracle](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/oracle), SoftBank and [CoreWeave](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/coreweave) reached record levels [6]. Saxo Bank strategist Charu Chanana read it as a reassessment of capital costs rather than a deterioration in AI demand [6]. ASE fell in New York and Taipei alike [4]. It remains up 162.7 percent this year and trades at 49 times trailing earnings, against a five-year median of 18.8 [5].

## Insiders sold the whole way up

Filings tallied by Quiver show [33 open-market sales by ASE insiders over six months and no purchases](https://www.quiverquant.com/news/ASE+Technology+Holding+Slides+as+Chip+Selloff+Overshadows+Strong+Recent+Revenue+Update) [4]. [GuruFocus](https://www.gurufocus.com/news/9126557/ase-technology-holding-co-ltd-asx-shares-fall-55-gf-value-says-still-overvalued) puts a year of insider selling near $370 million, a vendor estimate rather than a filed figure [5]. The biggest seller on Quiver's list is Tien-Szu Chen, general manager of ASE's Chung-Li branch: four sales of 530,000 shares, worth about $247 million by Quiver's estimate [4]. [Twelve Form 4s, the SEC filings that disclose an insider's trades](https://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&CIK=0001122411&type=4&dateb=&owner=include&count=40), landed on a single day in September [8].

## October 29 decides whether the boom is profit

Management guided third-quarter assembly-and-test gross margin to 28 to 29 percent, from 27.3 percent in the second quarter, and [the full report lands on October 29](https://ir.aseglobal.com/) [2][3][9]. If the volume beat carried that margin, the fall was about credit costs, and a business compounding at these rates sits underneath the stock. If the beat was bought with price, the officers' selling starts to look like information.

The margin number will show how much of the record revenue became profit, the one fact about this boom the market did not have on October 15.

## Takeaway

ASE beat its own packaging guidance by five points, then fell 6.6 percent anyway in a selloff that had nothing to do with it; with insiders selling 33 times and margins guided only to October 29, the gross-margin print decides whether the boom is profit or pricing.
