# ASUS sells out its $1,299 Xbox handheld in five days as PC shipments slide 21%

> The ROG Xbox Ally X20 and its $2,499 XREAL bundle vanished from Best Buy and ASUS.com within five days of launch. Counterpoint's Q3 count shows why that matters: the PC market fell 21% and ASUS held up better than any top-five rival.

## Sold out at both prices in five days

ASUS launched the ROG Xbox Ally X20, a 20th-anniversary Windows handheld sold under [Microsoft](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/microsoft)'s Xbox branding, on October 15, 2026, at $1,299, listed only at [Best Buy](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/best-buy) and the ASUS eShop [1][8]. A $2,499 bundle adding XREAL AR glasses and a dBrand case in a Pelican box went on sale the same day [1]. By October 20 both configurations were [sold out at Best Buy and ASUS.com, five days after launch](https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/handheld-gaming-pc/asus-rog-xbox-ally-x20-sold-out-in-days) and nearly two months after preorders opened on August 25 [1]. ASUS has not said when units return [1].

## A 21 percent market where only the premium shelf cleared

[Counterpoint Research's preliminary count puts global PC shipments down 21% year over year in the third quarter](https://wccftech.com/global-pc-shipments-drop-21-percent-q3-as-memory-prices-surge/), at 57 million units, [squeezed by AI-driven memory and component price hikes](https://www.theverge.com/gadgets/1017144/global-pc-shipments-dropped-q3-2026-ram), with a 27% decline forecast for the fourth [3][4]. ASUS shipped 5.2 million PCs, down 7% annually but up 19.4% from the prior quarter, the smallest annual drop among the top five vendors, lifting its share from 7.8% to 9.2% [3][9].

[Apple](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/apple), at 9.8% share, was the only peer as resilient, with Counterpoint crediting the MacBook Neo [5]. The Inference last covered this on October 9, when ASUS opened $2,599 RTX Spark preorders and early trackers put the decline at 20.1%; Counterpoint's count now lands at 21% and points lower again for Q4 ([prior coverage](https://theinference.org/article/asus-opens-2-599-nvidia-rtx-spark-preorders-as-pc-shipments-fall-20-1-and-only-asus-gains-share)) [3][4].

*Chart: **ASUS emptied the top of the handheld price stack in five days** Bar chart of US launch prices for four handheld configurations: ROG Xbox Ally X at $999, ROG Xbox Ally X20 at $1,299, MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ at $1,799, and the X20 plus XREAL glasses bundle at $2,499; the two ASUS X20 configurations sold out within five days.*

## Same chip, $300 more, slower than Intel

The X20 reuses [AMD](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/amd)'s Ryzen Z2 Extreme from the $999 ROG Xbox Ally X it replaces [6]. [Notebookcheck measured gaming performance](https://www.notebookcheck.net/A-stunning-OLED-screen-Asus-ROG-Xbox-Ally-X20-Gaming-Handheld-Review.1425337.0.html) as unchanged, [Intel](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/intel)'s Arc G3 Extreme as almost 30% faster, and still called the 7.4-inch OLED a "game changer" with "simply stunning" image quality, measuring 1,515 nits at HDR peak [6]. [The Shortcut found Intel rivals 10 to 20 fps ahead](https://www.theshortcut.com/p/asus-rog-xbox-ally-x20-review) and still preferred the X20, which runs about an hour longer on battery [2].

[MSI's $1,799 Intel-powered Claw 8 EX AI+ sold out within 24 hours at US retailers](https://www.msn.com/en-us/technology/consumer-electronics/resellers-are-charging-800-over-msrp-for-the-msi-claw-8-ex-ai-handheld/ar-AA2ajT3s) and drew $500 to $800 reseller markups, while the $999 Ally X now sells discounted as open-box at Best Buy [7][8]. No source gives an allocation or unit figure, so a five-day sellout proves the price cleared, not the volume.

## Restock timing is now the demand test

[The holiday quarter Counterpoint expects to fall 27%](https://www.fonearena.com/blog/495602/global-pc-shipments-q3-2026-counterpoint.html) decides whether scarcity scales into sales [3][4]. The split for investors is plain: AMD holds a flagship that sold out on a year-old chip, Intel's faster silicon cannot stay in stock, and ASUS converts component inflation into price. In a PC market shrinking by a fifth, the only shelves that emptied were the expensive ones.

## Takeaway

ASUS sold out both ROG Xbox Ally X20 configurations, even a $2,499 bundle, within five days, while Counterpoint counted the PC market down 21% in Q3 with only ASUS among top-five vendors close to flat; the Q4 holiday quarter decides whether scarcity converts into sales.
