# Authentic Brands Group sues Anthropic for $41 million over 274 Elvis songs before a possible $100 billion IPO

> Elvis Presley's rights holders sued Anthropic on October 23 for $41 million over 274 songs, weeks before a listing that could raise $100 billion. It joins more than $4 billion in music copyright claims filed against the company this year.

## Elvis, priced at $150,000 a song

Authentic Brands Group, the licensing company that controls Elvis Presley's music and likeness, sued [Anthropic](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/anthropic) on October 23 alongside co-plaintiffs who hold other Presley rights [1]. [The complaint](https://pitchfork.com/story/elvis-presley-catalog-owners-sue-ai-company-anthropic-for-copyright-infringement/) says Claude, Anthropic's chatbot, was trained on 274 Presley songs without a license, and it seeks about $150,000 per song, roughly $41 million [1].

It is among the first suits from a single artist's catalog rather than a label or publisher [1][7]. Their exhibit is Claude itself: asked to recreate the songs "for a modern audience" after Anthropic added guardrails, the model said its renders keep "landing very close to the originals" [1].

## The calendar is the money

Anthropic could list as soon as November, a debut The New York Times calls a litmus test for the economy with trillions at stake: a private valuation near $1 trillion, more than $130 billion raised, an offering that could raise $100 billion [2]. Reporting around the round says the company is seeking as much as $2 trillion in the listing, with some investors pushing toward $1.5 trillion [8].

Third-quarter revenue was $16.8 billion, up 46 percent [3]. [OpenAI](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/openai) wants [its own round of up to $30 billion](https://cryptobriefing.com/openai-fundraising-ahead-anthropic-ipo/) closed first, at a $1.25 trillion pre-money valuation, below the $1.4 trillion-plus reported days earlier [3][8].

## Four claims, one lawyer

The Elvis case is the newest music suit against Anthropic this year, and the smallest with a public number. Universal Music Group and other publishers [sought more than $3 billion in January](https://finance.yahoo.com/news/umg-seeks-more-3b-damages-172733291.html) over 20,000-plus songs from what they called "pirate libraries" [6]. Round Hill Music said in August its damages could approach or exceed $1 billion [5]. Reservoir Media sued on October 21, a filing [The Inference covered last week](https://theinference.org/article/reservoir-media-sues-suno-for-186-million-and-anthropic-for-151-million-over-ai-music-training) [4]. Richard Busch, who won the Marvin Gaye estate's "Blurred Lines" case, represents Round Hill, Reservoir and the Elvis plaintiffs [4][5][7].

*Chart: **Music claims against Anthropic now top $4 billion** Bar chart of damages sought in music copyright complaints against Anthropic: UMG and other publishers over $3 billion in January 2026, Round Hill Music up to $1 billion in August 2026, and the Elvis catalog claim of $41 million in October 2026.*

*Damages sought in music copyright complaints against Anthropic, in millions of dollars, as stated by plaintiffs or their lawyers; Round Hill's figure is the ceiling its complaint described. Reservoir's October 21 claim against Anthropic is not plotted because its damages figure was not in the reports fetched. [1][5][6]*

## A rounding error with a reporting duty

Anthropic says it disagrees with the Elvis claims and will defend them fully; its answer in court is fair use, the position that training transforms the songs into something new [1][4]. Next to a possible $100 billion raise, $41 million is roughly 0.04 percent, and the Elvis check will not price the deal [1][4].

What changes is disclosure: a listed Anthropic must report pending litigation on a schedule private companies can choose to skip [3]. Watch the litigation section of the S-1, the filing that opens the books, then OpenAI's signatures and whether November holds [3]. Before the listing, a music suit is a press release; after it, a line item.

## Takeaway

A $41 million Elvis suit will not price Anthropic's IPO, but it pushes music claims against the company past $4 billion just as a listing would force it to disclose litigation on a schedule.
