# Avnet's record quarter came with $8.2 billion of inventory and an $842 million cash burn

> The record quarter came with an $842 million operating cash burn, $2.1 billion of memory-priced inventory and a $650 million convertible struck at $70.27, all ahead of Wishbone's November 20 vote.

[Avnet](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/avnet) just posted the best quarter in its hundred-year history, and the honest reading of it is not the sales line but the bill that came with it. [Fiscal first-quarter sales hit a record $10.7 billion, up 82% year on year, with adjusted earnings per share of $3.63](https://uk.finance.yahoo.com/news/avnet-reports-first-quarter-2027-130000807.html), well above the $2.80 to $2.90 the company originally guided [1][3]. Yet the 10-Q filed on November 6 shows [operations used $842 million of cash in the quarter](https://www.stocktitan.net/sec-filings/AVT/8-k-avnet-inc-reports-material-event-7380a4c5e366.html), against net income of $282 million [2][3].

## The gap has a simple name: inventory

Avnet added $2.1 billion of stock and $893 million of receivables to serve demand it says is broad-based, led by data center, aerospace and defense, and networking [4][5]. Substantially all of the quarter's pricing increase was tied to memory products [4], and [management attributed roughly a third of the sequential sales growth to memory pricing alone](https://stockanalysis.com/stocks/avt/transcripts/725218-q1-2027/) [5].

That means a large share of the $8.2 billion now sitting on the balance sheet was bought at rising memory prices [1]. If memory keeps climbing, that inventory is the engine. If the cycle turns, the same inventory is the write-down, and shareholders' equity of $5.3 billion against total assets of $18.5 billion leaves little cushion [1].

## The boom was also borrowed

Financing inflows of $951 million covered the cash burn, and [debt rose to $4.17 billion from $3.21 billion in a single quarter](https://theinference.org/article/avnet-adds-1-billion-of-bank-credit-as-inventory-climbs-600-million-and-debt-reaches-3-48-billion) [2][3]. Interest expense jumped to $92 million [1], which alone cost $0.23 of earnings per share quarter over quarter [5].

On top of that sits the $650 million convertible struck at $70.27, on which The Inference reported Wishbone's [November 20 vote against chairman-led approval](https://theinference.com/article/wishbone-votes-against-avnet-s-chairman-over-a-650-million-convertible-with-a-70-27-conversion-price) [8]; with the stock closing at $85.68, those notes sit about 22% in the money, roughly 9.3 million shares of dilution against an 86 million share count [1][6].

*Chart: **The inventory Avnet bought dwarfs the equity backing it** Bar chart of Avnet's inventories, long- and short-term debt, shareholders' equity and cash at October 3, 2026, in billions of dollars.*

*Balance sheet at October 3, 2026, in billions of US dollars, from Avnet's Q1 fiscal 2027 condensed consolidated balance sheet. Debt combines short-term ($0.86B) and long-term ($3.31B) carrying amounts. [1]*

## What would have to go wrong

CFO Ken Jacobson says cash generation catches up by fiscal year-end as growth moderates, and return on working capital of 25% is the best in a decade [5]. Both can be true and the risk remains: guidance already fades, calling for about 5% sequential growth in the December quarter [1][2].

The distributor's model works when prices rise and demand holds. The question the 10-Q forces is who is left holding $8.2 billion of inventory and $4.2 billion of debt if either leg wobbles [8]. Watch the November 20 vote, then watch memory prices [8].

## Takeaway

Avnet's record quarter was financed by inventory and debt, and both the November 20 vote on its convertible and the memory price cycle now decide whether that holds.
