# Axon put $1.2 billion into Skydio for a 37% stake and cut $130 million of 2026 federal counter-drone revenue

> Axon reported a record $909 million quarter, then put $1.2 billion into Skydio for a 37% stake and exclusive public-safety distribution. The same letter cut $130 million of federal Dedrone revenue from 2026, the first shortfall under the drone thesis.

[Axon](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/axon) spent its record quarter buying the sky. The Scottsdale company behind the TASER and the body camera on most American police officers reported $909 million of Q3 revenue on November 5, up 28% year over year, then unveiled [the largest single investment in its history: $1.2 billion of cash and stock into Skydio](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/axon-invests-1-2-billion-in-skydio-to-build-the-future-of-drone-as-first-responder-302930993.html), the San Mateo drone maker, lifting Axon's fully diluted stake to 37% at a $5.2 billion pre-money valuation [1][2].

*Chart: **Revenue has climbed every quarter for two years, to $909 million** Line chart of Axon quarterly revenue from Q3 2024 through Q3 2026, rising steadily from about $544 million to $909 million.*

## Exclusive channel, software margins

The deal is more than a check. Axon becomes [Skydio](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/skydio)'s exclusive distributor for public safety in the US and Canada, booking the channel revenue at a net, software-services margin [1][2]. Skydio expects [about $1 billion of bookings this fiscal year](https://theinference.org/article/skydio-sells-the-army-one-soldier-two-drone-targeting-after-a-52-million-order-as-its-police-deals-shrink), serves more than 1,500 public safety agencies, and its [Drone as First Responder docks](https://theinference.org/article/skydio-sells-the-drones-axon-collects-the-rent-boulder-s-police-drone-room-bills-1-5-million-over-ten-years) now sit within two miles of 28 million Americans; the companies say drones beat officers to roughly 80% of the calls where they deploy [1].

## The federal slip inside the record print

Now the complication, [buried three paragraphs into the shareholder letter](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1069183/000162828026071086/0001628280-26-071086-index.htm): the same guidance cut roughly $130 million of 2026 revenue from three federal Dedrone deployments, $30 million that slipped out of Q3 and $100 million out of Q4 [2]. Axon says growth would be nearly 500 basis points higher without the slip [2]. The first federal shortfall in the drone complex lands on the very day the drone bet doubles down. Gross margin fell to 56.7% from 60.1%, weighted down by counter-drone hardware, and free cash flow turned negative [2].

*Chart: **Gross margin sank to 56.7% in Q3, its lowest since early 2024, on counter-drone hardware** Line chart of Axon's gross margin by quarter from Q3 2023 to Q3 2026, holding near 60 percent through mid-2026 before falling to 56.7 percent in Q3 2026.*

*Gross margin, percent of revenue, by calendar quarter. Q3 2026 from Axon's Q3 2026 shareholder letter; earlier quarters from Axon's SEC filings. [2][5]*

## The consent revolt is not waiting

On November 4, [a proposed class action filed in San Francisco federal court](https://www.theverge.com/ai-artificial-intelligence/1026642/axon-is-being-sued-over-its-ai-license-plate-reading-cameras) alleged Axon's plate-reading cameras tracked California drivers without required privacy disclosures, calling it a mass-surveillance infrastructure that is practically impossible to avoid [3]. The drone market Axon prices at $13 billion in North America runs on the same public trust the lawsuit is testing [1].

The first readings of which force wins: the deal's closing in Q4 2026 and Q1 2027, and whether that $130 million of federal revenue shows up in 2027 [1][2].

## Takeaway

A record quarter, a doubled-down drone bet and the first federal counter-drone shortfall: whether the $1.2 billion Skydio deal closes on schedule and the $130 million returns in 2027 settles which force wins.
