# Bending Spoons shuts Vimeo On Demand on November 20, and buyers lose films they paid for

> Vimeo On Demand goes dark on November 20 and viewers lose films they paid for, while Curios, Gumlet and other rivals collect the fleeing sellers. It is the first of Bending Spoons' acquired brands to shut a paying storefront, and the retention numbers show the base eroding underneath.

On November 20, 2026, [every storefront on Vimeo On Demand goes dark](https://www.prweb.com/releases/curios-launches-video-on-demand-tools-for-filmmakers-as-vimeo-on-demand-shuts-down-302917739.html) [1]. New uploads were blocked on August 22, new purchases and subscriptions stopped on September 21, and the last seller payouts cleared on September 24 [1]. On shutdown day, viewers lose access to the films and series they already paid for, and sellers can export only the buyers who opted in to updates [1]. A person who bought a film with real money may lose the right to watch it.

[Bending Spoons](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/bending-spoons), the Milan-based serial acquirer of faded software brands, bought [Vimeo](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/vimeo) for $1.38 billion in September 2025 and laid off the majority of staff, including the video team, by January 2026 [2]. [Berkshire Hathaway](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/berkshire-hathaway) has since put $930 million into the roll-up, a 4% stake [3]. The company is retiring the revenue-generating storefront rather than investing in it, and the sellers who built businesses on it absorb the loss.

The Inference has covered the funding side before: [Berkshire's October placement, the Miro purchase, the Airtable staff pushed out](https://theinference.org/article/berkshire-put-another-330-million-into-bending-spoons-which-paid-1-8-billion-for-17-5-billion-miro) [3]. What is new is the first hard exit of a paying storefront, and the money walking out the door behind it.

## The gap is the cost

Sales stopped on September 21, and a new storefront takes weeks to set up, so every week without one is revenue a filmmaker does not get back [1].

The rivals are moving in behind it. Gumlet, a video-hosting platform, says [12,000 customers left Vimeo for its service between January 2025 and June 2026](https://natlawreview.com/press-releases/12000-customers-migrate-vimeo-gumlet-following-bending-spoons-acquisition), taking more than 900,000 hours of video [2]. Rushes and FrameRate launched in 2026 positioned against Vimeo [2].

Curios, an Austin direct-to-fan marketplace, launched its importer on October 23: it moves files, artwork and opted-in buyers, charges no commission on sales, and hands sellers every buyer's contact details [1]. Curios founder Grant Powell put it plainly: "Every time a platform shuts down, creators get a painful reminder that they never really owned their audience" [1].

## The pattern shows up in the numbers

The same squeeze appears at [Evernote](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/evernote), which Bending Spoons bought in 2023: revenue rose 30% between 2022 and 2025 while the user count fell 48% [3]. Vimeo's own net revenue retention, the share of last year's subscription revenue that stays, printed between 91% and 95% in every disclosed period before the company stopped publishing it after its July IPO [3]. The base keeps eroding, and the acquired brand keeps paying.

*Chart: **Vimeo's net revenue retention sat between 91% and 95% in every disclosed reading** Column chart of Vimeo net revenue retention from 2023 to Q1 2026, all readings between 91 and 95 percent.*

*Vimeo's net revenue retention, on the company's own definition, from the IPO prospectus as reported by The Inference; below 100% means part of the prior year's subscription revenue went away, and disclosure stopped after the July IPO. Source: The Inference, October 19, 2026. [3]*

## What to watch

The bull case is real: Mizuho called Berkshire's add-on a vote of confidence, and some [Miro](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/miro) holders are rolling $295 million of proceeds into Bending Spoons stock [3]. Watch the fourth quarter, when the Miro purchase closes and the first quarter that consolidates it shows whether enterprise customers renew through a price reset [3]. For the filmmakers, the deadline is sooner: November 20, when the doors close [3]. The filmmakers bear the cost, Curios and its rivals take the sellers, and Bending Spoons' shareholders collect whatever is left of the brand.

## Takeaway

Vimeo On Demand shuts on November 20 and buyers lose paid access, sellers scatter to Curios, Gumlet and rivals, and the retention numbers show the acquired base eroding under Bending Spoons.
