# BigBear.ai's $225 Million of Contracts Is a Ceiling, Not a Check

> The October 13 announcement lifted the stock 11.7 percent before it faded; the company's own Form 10-Q shows only 29 percent of the existing backlog was funded, with $158 million more sitting in unexercised options. The October 27 print shows how much of the headline has money behind it.

On October 13 [BigBear.ai](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/bigbear-ai), a McLean, Virginia provider of AI decision-support software for national security agencies, announced [more than $225 million of contract awards won since July](https://ir.bigbear.ai/news-events/press-releases/detail/149/bigbear-ai-secures-more-than-225-million-in-contract). Chief executive [Kevin McAleenan](https://theinference.org/markets/people/kevin-mcaleenan), a former commissioner of Customs and Border Protection who later served as acting secretary of homeland security, named the FBI, NASA, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Department of Energy and the Department of Veterans Affairs as new or expanding customers, alongside more than 25 generative-AI awards, CBP recompetes won with SAIC and Unissant, combatant commands and new classified intelligence work [1]. The stock [jumped as much as 11.7 percent that morning](https://www.fool.com/investing/2026/10/13/why-bigbear-ai-stock-soared-as-much-as-11-7-today/) [2], and on October 16 it closed at $2.16, down about 69 percent over the past year [2] and roughly 70 percent below its 52-week high, which Ainvest reports as $9.39 [3].

## A crowded short base read the headline as booked demand

For the crowded trade, the headline read as booked demand. [About 31 percent of BigBear.ai's shares were sold short as of early October](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/bigbear-ai-heavily-shorted-fundamentals-124500101.html), with roughly ten days to cover, the setup squeezes are built on [4]. A stock that beaten-down with a headline that large is exactly the ticket retail squeezes get built around.

## What the $225 million actually is

The release's own first footnote defines the number: total contract value "represents the total potential value of the awards, including unexercised options and ceiling values, and does not necessarily reflect funded amounts," and government customers fund incrementally as appropriations arrive, with termination-for-convenience rights [1]. [24/7 Wall St.](https://247wallst.com/investing/2026/10/13/bigbear-ai-climbs-5-on-more-than-225m-in-federal-contract-awards-palantir-and-ambarella-ease/) drew the same line on the day itself, noting the award sum and the collectable money are different things [6]. The company did not identify which task orders its CBP recompetes fall under; SAIC separately announced [a $742 million CBP recompete in September](https://www.govconwire.com/articles/bigbear-ai-225m-federal-contract-awards) [7]. And the awards landed two weeks before [the earnings report scheduled to update the funded-backlog line](https://ir.bigbear.ai/news-events/press-releases/detail/148/bigbear-ai-to-report-third-quarter-2026-results-on-october) [10].

## The funded share of the last backlog was 29 percent

The sharpest decomposition sits not in the press release but in the [Form 10-Q filed July 30](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1836981/000183698126000064/bbai-20260630.htm). Of the $269.6 million backlog at June 30, $79.4 million was funded, $31.7 million was unfunded, and $158.5 million was unexercised options, priced and unpriced [5]. Options become revenue only if the customer exercises them, and the filing warns outright that contracts in backlog "may not result in actual revenue in any particular period or at all" [5]. The new awards postdate that measurement, so none of them sit in the funded line yet.

*Chart: **Only 29 percent of BigBear.ai's backlog is funded work** Stacked bar of BigBear.ai's backlog at June 30, 2026, split into funded, unfunded, priced unexercised options and unpriced unexercised options, showing funded work as the smallest large component.*

*Backlog decomposition as of June 30, 2026, in millions of dollars, from BigBear.ai's Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. Priced and unpriced options convert to revenue only if customers exercise them. [5]*

## The income statement has not caught up to the drumbeat

Revenue peaked at $43.8 million in the fourth quarter of 2024; the June 2026 quarter came in at $36.7 million, up 13.2 percent year over year but still below that peak [5][8]. Trailing revenue of about $132 million is down roughly 14 percent from the $153 million a year earlier, and the adjusted EBITDA loss widened to $11.6 million in the quarter from $8.5 million a year before [8][3]. At a $1.12 billion market capitalization, that prices the equity near 8.5 times trailing sales with no earnings denominator anywhere [2]. The nearest insider filing is a [Form 4 dated October 14](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1836981/000188373226000019/0001883732-26-000019-index.htm): chief financial officer Sean Ricker surrendered 34,050 shares at $2.39 to cover taxes on vesting restricted stock units, leaving him 551,852 shares, a routine withholding rather than an open-market sale [9].

*Chart: **Quarterly revenue peaked in late 2024 and has not regained that level** Line chart of BigBear.ai's quarterly revenue from Q1 2024 through Q2 2026, rising to a $43.8 million peak in Q4 2024 and sitting at $36.7 million in Q2 2026.*

*Revenue by calendar quarter, in millions of dollars, from BigBear.ai's SEC filings, retrieved October 16, 2026. Q2 2026 revenue rose 13.2 percent year over year and remains below the Q4 2024 peak. [8]*

## The bull case rests on cash, not contracts

The other side deserves its word count. BigBear.ai held about $410 million in cash, restricted cash and marketable investments at June 30, more than four years of runway at the first half's $40.2 million operating cash burn [5]. Gross margin expanded 780 basis points in the quarter, backlog rose 9 percent in the first half, and analysts see profitability as soon as 2028 [4]. The cost of that cash shows in the share count: 479.5 million shares outstanding at June against 437.0 million in December, including 38.1 million issued on conversion of the 2029 notes [5]. Both the squeeze case and the cash case end at the same line item, the funded share of the backlog.

*Chart: **Gross margin jumped 780 basis points in the June quarter** Line chart of BigBear.ai's gross margin by calendar quarter from Q1 2024 through Q2 2026, swinging between 20.3 and 37.4 percent and ending at 32.8 percent in Q2 2026.*

*Gross margin by calendar quarter, in percent of revenue, from BigBear.ai's SEC filings, retrieved October 16, 2026. The June 2026 quarter ran 32.8 percent, 780 basis points above the June 2025 quarter. [11]*

## What October 27 can settle

The third-quarter release lands at about 4:15 pm Eastern on October 27, with the call at 4:30 [10]. Three lines decide the argument: whether the funded share of backlog moves off 29 percent, whether revenue clears the $33.1 million BigBear.ai posted in the third quarter of 2025 [8], and whether the EBITDA loss keeps widening [3]. The backlog is a promise. The funded line is the receipt, and the October 27 print is where the receipt shows up.

## Takeaway

Only 29 percent of BigBear.ai's prior backlog was funded, and the new $225 million counts options and ceiling values; the October 27 print shows how much of the headline is real.
