# Broadcom Shops $42 Billion of Anthropic Chip Debt to Wall Street

> Syndication letters are going out on a $42 billion senior-secured tranche of a $60 billion package funding Anthropic's chip purchases, with Blackstone holding $9 billion of the junior debt. The notes cannot sell before the IPO, so the price banks set in the coming weeks is the market's first hard read on Anthropic's credit.

## The letters go out, and the risk goes with them

Banks in the debt package are poised to send [syndication letters](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-10-02/broadcom-starts-amassing-60-billion-to-fund-chips-for-anthropic) on a $42 billion Class A senior-secured tranche, the opening move in $60 billion of AI-chip financing for [Anthropic](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/anthropic) and other companies, according to people with knowledge of a deal that has yet to be announced [1]. [Blackstone](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/blackstone) leads an $18 billion Class B junior tranche, committing $9 billion from various funds and syndicating the rest [2].

The package has been taking shape for weeks, watched across Wall Street and Silicon Valley for reassurance that investors remain keen to back AI's buildout amid a public backlash against data-center construction [3]. A representative for [Broadcom](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/broadcom) declined to comment [3].

*Chart: **Banks take the $42B senior slice; Blackstone keeps $9B of the junior** One stacked bar splits Broadcom's planned $60 billion AI chip financing into a $42 billion bank senior tranche, $9 billion retained by Blackstone funds and $9 billion of junior debt still to syndicate.*

## The paper prices the lab before the IPO does

The tranche matches, dollar for dollar, the facility in Anthropic's [IPO prospectus](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/01/broadcom-lending-anthropic-42-billion-chips-reuters.html): up to $42 billion of notes, convertible into Anthropic shares, [that Broadcom agreed to lend the lab](https://theinference.org/article/broadcom-turns-its-biggest-chip-customer-into-its-biggest-borrower), about a third of a $125.2 billion, five-year lease of TPU computing capacity, under an arrangement in which Broadcom can name a financing partner [4][5]. No notes are expected to be sold before the listing [4].

Anthropic deposited restricted cash for Broadcom's benefit in April 2026, and the filing warns that certain payment or performance defaults could make much of the lease due at once while limiting use of the facility to cover it [5]. The prospectus also flags Broadcom's double role, as supplier and financier, as a source of "potential conflicts of interest" over the computing power Anthropic needs [5].

## A $4.6 billion borrower behind a $518 billion bill

The credit on offer is thin against the obligation. Revenue grew twelvefold to nearly $4.6 billion in 2025 against a $42 billion net loss and operating losses above $8 billion, and [infrastructure commitments total $518 billion](https://theinference.org/article/anthropic-s-leaked-filing-warns-of-extinction-then-signs-518-billion-of-compute-it-cannot-cancel), including $161.2 billion of largely non-cancelable Broadcom-related leases [6]. Anthropic held $20.28 billion of cash and short-term investments at year end [6]. Its listing, [reported for as soon as mid-November](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/ai/articles/anthropic-eyes-2-trillion-plus-142100455.html), could value the lab above $2 trillion [6].

## The ramp the debt underwrites

Anthropic is expected to be Broadcom's largest compute customer in 2027, against company projections of about $115 billion of AI semiconductor revenue in fiscal 2027 and $230 billion in fiscal 2028 [5]. That is the curve the $60 billion finances: quarterly revenue has tripled, from $9.3 billion in late 2023 to $29.6 billion in the quarter ended 2 August [9].

*Chart: **Broadcom's quarterly revenue tripled in three years** A line rising from $9.3 billion in late 2023 to $29.6 billion in the August 2026 quarter, with a note that the fiscal 2028 AI revenue target, a company estimate, is $230 billion a year.*

*Broadcom quarterly revenue by fiscal quarter, Q4 2023 to Q3 2026 (ended 2 August 2026), US$ billions, from SEC filings via Sharadar; target per company projections reported 1 October 2026. [5][9]*

## Nvidia set the template; concentration sets the risk

[Nvidia](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nvidia) mobilized more than $500 billion with six financial firms, Blackstone included, in August, and has since [talked to insurers about sharing risk on loans backed by its own chips](https://thenextweb.com/news/nvidia-insurers-ai-chip-loans-neoclouds-ft) [2][7]. "Nvidia is putting in place a massive amount of its balance sheet, and Broadcom is having to follow suit," Seaport Research analyst Jay Goldberg said [5]. Blackstone is already an Anthropic investor, a stake that has helped boost the performance of its private equity fund catering to the wealthy, so the junior tranche stacks one bet on another [3].

The tape barely noticed the filing: AVGO rose 0.3 percent in premarket trading on 1 October [8]. The signal to watch is the yield and terms banks write into these letters in the coming weeks, before a listing reported for as soon as mid-November [6]. Broadcom keeps the sale; the banks keep the credit.

## Takeaway

Broadcom is handing banks a $42 billion senior-secured slice of the debt behind Anthropic's chip purchases, with Blackstone anchoring the junior tranche. Because the notes cannot trade before Anthropic's IPO, the yield banks demand in the coming weeks becomes the market's first hard read on the lab's credit.
