# Centrus Energy shipped its first new centrifuge early; the $560 million buildout faces November 5 earnings

> Centrus met its own year-end deadline three weeks early, and the stock fell anyway. The AI-driven nuclear demand the company was built to serve is signing binding contracts; the $560 million buildout behind it is the part investors have to finance, and the first print on that arrives November 5.

[Centrus Energy](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/centrus-energy) (NYSE: LEU) [completed and shipped the first new centrifuge from its Oak Ridge, Tennessee factory toward final assembly at its Piketon, Ohio enrichment site on October 29](https://www.stocktitan.net/news/LEU/centrus-begins-shipping-centrifuges-to-ohio-to-support-major-gwhprobcb4ku.html), weeks ahead of its own year-end target, and says its domestic supply chain is now complete [1]. The stock closed 1.27% lower that day [1]. The engineering milestone is proven. The argument the market is having is about everything that surrounds it: who finances the years between today's cash flow and the first new Ohio enrichment capacity in 2029 [1].

## The demand these machines serve is already signing contracts

Follow the chain from the demand side. AI data centers need electricity that never blinks, and the tech companies have responded by financing power plants themselves: [Microsoft](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/microsoft) is paying about $16 billion over twenty years for the output of the restarted Three Mile Island unit [2]. [Amazon](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/amazon) has put $700 million into [X-energy](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/x-energy) to build small, factory-made reactors [2].

The next-generation reactors in this wave run on high-assay low-enriched uranium, HALEU, fuel enriched to a higher level than today's reactor fuel [1]. Centrus's Piketon plant is the only licensed HALEU production facility in the western world [3].

The demand is turning into binding paper, not just announcements. In September, Antares, a microreactor developer chosen for US Army, Air Force and Space Force programs, [signed a definitive multi-year HALEU contract with Centrus](https://www.morningstar.com/news/pr-newswire/20260917ph50110/centrus-and-antares-sign-multi-year-haleu-supply-contract), with prepayments from the customer to fund the expansion and deliveries starting before the decade ends [3]. That is the sequence working as designed: the reactor customer pays while the machines are built, not after.

## The buildout is the expensive link, and it is already on the books

The gap between a proven machine and commercial-scale capacity is capital. Centrus committed $560 million in January to turn Oak Ridge into a high-rate plant capable of supporting thousands of centrifuges [1]. It then [paid about $116 million to bring centrifuge-casing supplier Westerman in-house](https://theinference.org/article/centrus-paid-116-million-for-its-centrifuge-casing-maker-as-the-stock-hit-a-52-week-low) and priced a $500 million equity offering in September, which put the financing directly on the share count [4].

*Chart: **Capex is compounding while revenue stays lumpy** Column chart of Centrus Energy quarterly revenue and capex, with capex rising from $0.7 million in Q4 2024 to $71.6 million in Q2 2026 while revenue swings between $73 million and $176 million.*

*Centrus Energy quarterly revenue and capital spending, Q4 2024 through Q2 2026, in millions of US dollars. Capex has risen a hundredfold over seven quarters as the $560 million buildout ramps, while revenue swings quarter to quarter. Sources: Centrus Energy quarterly figures from SEC filings [7]. [7]*

What pays for all of this today is thin and lumpy. [Consensus expects third-quarter revenue of $55 million, down about a quarter from a year earlier](https://uk.finance.yahoo.com/news/centrus-energy-report-q3-earnings-153500387.html), when results arrive on November 5, the first print since the offering [5]. The revenue that carries the long-term story is not what carries the quarter: even the Department of Energy's HALEU contract shrank by $5.9 million in Q2, the kind of lump a buildout-phase company cannot smooth [5].

## The street cut its targets and still left them above the price

Three banks re-rated the stock in the week of the milestone: TD Cowen initiated at Hold, Guggenheim had started at Buy earlier in the month, and [BofA and B. Riley cut their targets](https://www.marketscreener.com/news/b-riley-adjusts-price-target-on-centrus-energy-to-188-from-295-keeps-buy-rating-ce785cd2dc80f020) [4][6]. Even after the cuts, every target on record sits above the $103.29 close, and the mean across twenty analysts is $206 [4][6].

## Who pays for the middle of the chain

The first hop of this chain is done and observed: an American factory builds these machines again, ahead of schedule. The middle hops, turning contracts and government programs into the cash that funds thousands of machines, are where Centrus is working now, and it is doing it the expensive way: customer prepayments, an acquired supplier, fresh equity [3][4]. That is the right structure. Whoever holds the western world's only licensed HALEU capability should be the one capturing the premium when AI-era reactors need fuel.

Until 2029, though, the stock trades on cash, not capability [5]. The milestone answers whether Centrus can build; the November 5 print is where investors learn how much of the build is left to finance [5]. Every bank target still sitting above the price says the street's disagreement is with the timing and the dilution, not the destination [4]. That is exactly what the next few quarterly prints will measure.

## Takeaway

The centrifuge milestone is proven; the November 5 print shows how much of the $560 million buildout is still left to finance after the $500 million equity offering and the $116 million supplier deal.
