# Cisco's $6 billion AI backlog comes due on November 12, at three points of margin

> Bank of America kept its buy on Cisco with about $6 billion of AI orders booked but unshipped against a $7.5 billion fiscal 2027 target, at a forecast product gross margin of 64%. The services business Cisco is urging partners to sell sits outside that target, and it was flat last year.

[Bank of America](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/bank-of-america)'s November 3 note put a number on [Cisco](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/cisco)'s November 12 test: about $6 billion of AI infrastructure orders, booked but unshipped, has to become revenue [1]. The backlog covers most of the $7.5 billion Cisco expects from hyperscaler AI in fiscal 2027 [1] [3]. The bank [kept its buy rating and $150 target](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/ai/articles/cisco-ai-backlog-core-demand-181100832.html) on the strength of it [1]. The report is a delivery test: the orders are on the books and the shipments are not.

The target is Cisco's own. The company [closed fiscal 2026 in July](https://theinference.org/article/cisco-s-9-3-billion-in-ai-orders-comes-due-just-as-hpe-finds-800-million-for-a-price-war) with [$9.3 billion of hyperscaler AI orders](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-08/69299641-cisco-systems-inc-cisco-reports-fourth-quarter-and-fiscal-year-2026-earnings-008.htm) [3]. About $4 billion of that became revenue last year [3]. ## The margin cost is already in the reported numbers

Bank of America forecasts product gross margin of 64% for the quarter, three points below a year ago [1]. It expects revenue growth of about 22%, in line with Cisco's own guidance [1] [3]. The forecast extends a slide that has already happened: Cisco's July quarter reported non-GAAP product gross margin of 64.8% [3]. Efficiency is expected to absorb the give, with operating margin forecast at 36% [1].

## The services answer sits outside the number being tested

The $7.5 billion target, as Cisco reports it, is hardware delivered to hyperscalers, and services are a separate line: services revenue was flat in fiscal 2026 while product revenue grew 24% [3]. Services are still what Cisco is selling.

At Partner Summit last week, chief customer experience officer Liz Centoni told partners the play is professional services, ["high value, high margin,"](https://www.crn.com/news/networking/2026/cisco-pushes-partners-to-lead-with-high-margin-resilient-infrastructure-services) and Model Foundry, where customers tune Cisco's AI models on their own data, is rolling out to partners first [5].

President and chief product officer Jeetu Patel argues the same layer on security: Cisco fuses its network telemetry with [OpenAI](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/openai) models because ["using AI for defense is a prerequisite for staying safe"](https://openai.com/index/cisco-cyber/) [6]. The bottleneck is tooling; partners say the multitenant runbooks and one-click upgrades they need are not there yet [5].

## Shipping is the mechanical hop; running the network is where margin survives

Expectations have beaten Cisco once already: [the stock fell 9% in August on a record quarter](https://www.theglobeandmail.com/investing/markets/stocks/CSCO/pressreleases/3839803/why-cisco-csco-stock-is-down-today/) [7]. If the backlog converts at something near the forecast margin, the AI target is real and the argument moves to the line that has not grown.

Giving partners Model Foundry first is a bet that durable value sits with whoever runs an AI network after it ships. Watch the software and services lines on November 12: the backlog proves Cisco can take an order, and the next margin has to be earned operating the network.

## Takeaway

Cisco's November 12 print is a delivery test: about $6 billion of booked, unshipped AI orders must convert at a forecast 64% product gross margin, and the services line that is supposed to carry the next margin was flat last year.
