# Clay's $7.1 billion valuation is priced on agents its customers cannot run yet

> Clay's $115 million September round values the New York go-to-market software company at about 71 times the $100 million of annual recurring revenue TechCrunch reported in February. The follow-through landed at its October 8 conference: a campaign-builder in early access, Workflows in open beta, a voice SDR agent on a waitlist.

Wellington led [the September financing](https://www.streetinsider.com/Business+Wire/Clay+Raises+%24115M+to+be+the+AI+Growth+Engine+for+Every+Company/27041426.html), with Sequoia and Andreessen Horowitz among the backers [1]. The pitch they bought is a self-learning revenue engine: agents that find a company's ideal customers, watch intent signals and run campaigns, learning from each run [1]. At Sculpt, [Clay's user conference](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/clay) on October 8, 2026, the products that carry that promise shipped in early access, an open beta and on a waitlist [2].

What stands between the demo and a customer's workflow is delivery work: rollout, reliability, training. The $7.1 billion is a price on that work, and by [Clay](https://www.clay.com/)'s own schedule most customers reach the flagship agent over the coming months [2].

## The agent changes the operator's job

Clay [launched 13 features at Sculpt](https://www.automaterevops.ai/post/what-did-clay-sculpt-change-for-gtm-teams-and-solutions-partners); three carry the story [2]. The global agent takes an outcome in plain language, plans the campaign against Knowledge Hub, Clay's running record of who the company sells to, and proposes changes from the results for a person to approve [2][3]. Workflows, [in open beta for all users](https://www.weekcrm.com/news/2026-10-09-clay-adds-global-agent-and-workflows-open-beta), runs those plays across millions of records [3]. The Inbound SDR agent, previewed to a waitlist, qualifies leads in a voice call and learns from recordings of a company's best sellers [2].

That split rewrites the job. List building, qualification and first outreach become machine work; judging what the system learned becomes the human work. Clay named that operator the GTM engineer in 2023, and by the company's own count, relayed by [TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/02/techcrunch-disrupt-2026-clays-kareem-amin-on-the-rise-of-the-gtm-engineer/), about 100 listings a month now carry the title, including at Cursor and Webflow [4]. A $1 million scholarship announced with the round trains more of them [1].

## The ground under the valuation is contested

Landbase, a Mountain View rival that has raised $42.5 million in total, [published a benchmark on September 29](https://www.financialcontent.com/article/bizwire-2026-9-29-landbase-launches-gtm-3-omni-new-benchmark-shows-ai-agents-beat-clay-apollo-and-zoominfo-on-list-precision): four vendors, the same 26 list-building prompts, every row returned independently re-scored [5]. Its agent finished far ahead of Clay, with Apollo, a rival sales-data vendor, and [ZoomInfo](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/zoominfo) far behind [5]. The benchmark is the challenger's own publication, so read it as a challenge: the mechanism it argues for, an agent reasoning over the stated criteria instead of mapping a prompt onto fixed filters, is Landbase's claim, not a settled finding [5].

Clay's answer is data and distribution. [A October 9 partnership with G2](https://company.g2.com/news/g2-partners-with-clay), the software-review site, puts buyer-intent signals, which flag companies actively researching a software category, inside Clay workflows with no G2 subscription, on top of the 200-plus data providers Clay already aggregates [6]. For a listed comparison, ZoomInfo trades under the ticker GTM and has posted roughly flat revenue for eight straight quarters [7].

*Chart: **Landbase's own benchmark puts its agent at 77% list precision to Clay's 48%** Bar chart of list-building precision on Landbase's benchmark: Landbase 76.7%, Clay 47.9%, Apollo 36.0%, ZoomInfo 23.2%*

*The challenger's own benchmark, published September 29, 2026: four vendors given the same 26 list-building prompts and qualification criteria, every returned company and person independently re-verified. Percent of returned rows that met the criteria. Source: Landbase announcement. [5]*

*Chart: **ZoomInfo revenue has been close to flat for eight straight quarters** Line chart of ZoomInfo quarterly revenue from Q3 2024 to Q2 2026, holding between about $304 million and $319 million*

## Clay is paying to close its own gap

Closing that distance is Clay's own cost. Headcount has climbed to about 600 from 85, [per an interview with chief of staff Julia Govberg](https://castro.fm/episode/m4xuDq) [8], and Clay's own solutions partner reads the hiring as a turn toward forward-deployed work: software plus people embedded at the customer, a services-shaped cost that software multiples do not price [2]. A customer quote on Clay's site states the ambition: [Salesforce](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/salesforce) for record-keeping, [Snowflake](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/snowflake) for product data, and Clay for turning it all into automated action [9]. Amin sells the category from TechCrunch's Disrupt stage this week [4].

If the agents run for every customer the way they ran in San Francisco, the valuation will look earned. Until then, the useful move inside any revenue team is to claim the reviewer's job: decide who accepts or rejects the agent's recommendations each week, because the learning only pays off when a person makes that call [2].

## Takeaway

Clay's $7.1 billion prices delivery work still ahead: the flagship agents shipped at Sculpt in early access, open beta or on a waitlist, a rival benchmark scores its list building at 48%, and about 600 staff on roughly $100 million of ARR is a services-shaped cost the multiple does not price.
