# Cloudflare takes over the compiler AI agents check their code with

> Cloudflare has taken ownership of tsrs, a Rust port of Microsoft's TypeScript compiler that AI agents wrote almost unaided. The compiler earns nothing; the play is owning the toolchain agent-built software must pass through before it lands on Cloudflare's bill.

[Cloudflare](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/cloudflare) [has taken ownership of tsrs](https://www.heise.de/en/news/Cloudflare-takes-over-tsrs-a-Rust-port-of-the-TypeScript-compiler-11497790.html), a Rust rewrite of [Microsoft](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/microsoft)'s TypeScript compiler that AI agents wrote almost unaided. The compiler itself will earn nothing. What it buys Cloudflare is control of the tool every coding agent must run before its work can ship, and a reason that work lands on Workers, the company's paid compute platform. [1]

## A compiler written by agents, for agents

The project began in late September at Owner.com, a restaurant-software firm whose 37,000-file TypeScript backend overwhelmed Microsoft's official Go-based compiler: [80 seconds and 19 GB of memory for one check](https://thenewstack.io/cloudflare-rust-typescript-tsrs/), too much for many agents to run at once [1]. Max Schwenk, who leads AI developer tools there, directed more than 20 subagents running on Claude Opus 5.5, [Anthropic](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/anthropic)'s AI model, and wrote no code himself [1]. Typechecking in the company's CI now takes about seven seconds. [1]

*Chart: **tsrs's claimed speedup far exceeds TypeScript 7.1's own gains, on different baselines** Bar chart of speedup multiples: tsrs vs TypeScript 7.0 up to 8x (Cloudflare claim), tsrs vs the Go nightly 2.5 to 5x (founder measurement), TypeScript 7.1 beta vs 7.0 13 to 47% faster.*

*How much faster each implementation checks types, as a multiple of the prior baseline, on the bases each source used: Cloudflare's claim against TypeScript 7.0, the tsrs founder's measurements across 17 open-source projects against Microsoft's Go development build, and Microsoft's own beta measurements against 7.0. Sources: heise online, October 23, 2026; The New Stack, October 20, 2026. [1][2]*

The numbers carry two different baselines, and the chart marks them. Cloudflare says tsrs checks types up to 8 times faster than TypeScript 7.0 with about 70% less memory at equal thread counts; against Microsoft's current Go development build, the founder's own measurements across open-source projects are 2.5 to 5 times faster. [2] Version 0.18 is experimental, and Cloudflare is explicit that tsrs must follow Microsoft's compiler wherever the two disagree. [2]

## Why the toolchain lands on Cloudflare's bill

The link this development moves is the sandbox. Rust compiles to WebAssembly without dragging a garbage collector along, so a full agent toolchain, typecheck included, fits inside the isolated environments Workers sells. Cloudflare says this directly: tsrs matters when agents run complete development toolchains on its platform. [2]

Cloudflare's own engineering shows the economics already work internally. In [a case study published with OpenAI this week](https://openai.com/index/cloudflare-cyber/), the company says its developers all use Codex, and that a four-person team rebuilt a postponed product in three days for $1,100 in tokens, work it estimates would have needed roughly ten times more developers. [3] That is what agent-scale typechecking exists to serve.

## No tsrs revenue yet, at about 179 times earnings

It does not yet prove the external claim: no tsrs revenue exists, and shareholders fund the engineering. The stock closed at $297.58 on October 19, [priced at about 179 times expected earnings](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/cloudflare-net-worth-most-users-144838840.html), exactly the valuation [our October 20 piece](https://theinference.org/article/cloudflare-claims-10-million-developers-as-the-stock-falls-15-and-two-insiders-sell) examined when it fell 15% on doubts that Cloudflare's 10-million-developer claim can be verified. [4]

## Two tests: billed usage on Workers, and the speed edge

Two tests decide whether this strengthens the platform story. First, whether agent toolchains running on Workers start showing up in paid usage, the number the whole model turns on. Second, whether tsrs's speed edge survives: Microsoft's TypeScript 7.1 beta already checks code 13% to 47% faster than 7.0, and Microsoft credits some of those gains to optimizations discovered in tsrs. [2]

The project's own author supplies the risk framing: "A faster compiler that finds fewer errors is a broken compiler with good marketing." [1] The compiler is the cheap part. [Converting it into billed compute](https://theinference.org/article/cloudflare-is-buying-the-whole-stack-ai-agents-build-on-and-the-stock-trades-at-49-5-times-sales) is the work Cloudflare has now taken on, and it is the right work to own.

## Takeaway

Taking tsrs puts Cloudflare in front of the typechecker every coding agent runs, a wedge to land agent toolchains on Workers; nothing bills yet, and Microsoft's 7.1 beta is already eroding the speed edge the bet rests on.
