# Cognition hires Snowflake's Chris Degnan as revenue chief with Devin's run rate at $1 billion

> Cognition named Chris Degnan, who built Snowflake's sales team past $3 billion in annual recurring revenue, its chief revenue officer on October 12. Devin is now delivering measurable savings inside consultancies while OpenAI meters its usage; the open question is which of three companies signs the enterprise contract.

[Cognition](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/cognition), the private company [valued at $48 billion](https://theinference.org/article/cognition-s-48-billion-devin-runs-on-nvidia-s-newest-racks-rented-from-coreweave) behind Devin, the AI agent that completes software tasks end to end, named Chris Degnan [chief revenue officer on October 12](https://aitech365.com/business-technology/cognition-appoints-chris-degnan-as-chief-revenue-officer/) [1]. The hire says where the bottleneck moved: the engineering is delivering, the scarce asset is the enterprise contract, and [Cognition](https://cognition.com/blog) does not hold it [1][2].

Degnan was the first sales hire at [Snowflake](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/snowflake), the listed cloud-data company, and later its chief revenue officer, building by Cognition's account the sales organization that carried it past $3 billion in annual recurring revenue [1]. Factory, a rival coding-agent startup whose board he advised, [fired him on September 30 over alleged confidentiality breaches](https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/30/factory-ceo-just-accused-his-vc-board-advisor-of-spying-for-cognition/), which he denies [3][4]. He joins a business doubling fast. Cognition's annualized revenue was $492 million in May [5]. On September 25 it [announced a run rate, the same annualized figure, of $1 billion](https://cognition.com/blog) [6].

*Chart: **Cognition's stated run rate doubled in four months** Cognition's stated annualized revenue rose from $0.49 billion in May 2026 past $0.9 billion at its September 8 round to $1 billion announced on September 25, 2026.*

*Annualized revenue as stated by Cognition, billions of US dollars. The September 8 point is a floor: Cognition said its run rate had topped $900 million at its Series E round, and it is drawn as an estimate. Sources: The Inference, October 9 and 10, 2026; Cognition blog. [2][5][6]*

## The savings land on the consultancy's paper

At Odyssey Logistics, a logistics company consolidating order intake and shipment management onto one platform, a seven-person team from [Cognizant](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/cognizant), the IT services firm, used Devin to convert legacy [Microsoft](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/microsoft) Access and Visual Basic forms into cloud-native applications [7]. Devin generated the tests, deployment pipelines and documentation; a Cognizant technical lead or architect approved every change before merge, inside a fixed budget [7].

Odyssey [reported a 37% net cost saving](https://www.theconsultingreport.com/cognizant-and-cognition-help-odyssey-cut-legacy-modernization-costs-by-37/) against a conventional rebuild [7]. A pilot, run before the main commitment, finished 21 days after kickoff [7]. The consultancy owns the account: Cognizant has trained more than 3,000 associates on Devin, and it and Infosys both signed Cognition partnerships in January [6][7].

## OpenAI meters the usage of its own rival

Since [OpenAI](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/openai)'s DevDay on September 29, the OpenAI calls Devin makes [draw down a subscriber's existing ChatGPT plan instead of creating a separate API bill](https://theinference.org/article/openai-s-20-chatgpt-login-is-now-the-meter-for-devin-and-15-other-developer-tools), with no fee between the companies disclosed [2]. Devin is one of 16 launch partners on Sign in with ChatGPT; OpenAI also fields Codex, Devin's direct competitor [2]. Cognition's distribution therefore runs through a rival's login and consultancies' account teams, while [CoreWeave](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/coreweave), the Nasdaq-listed compute landlord, bills the rented racks underneath either way [2][5].

## Degnan's job is moving deals onto Cognition's own paper

Direct enterprise contracts are the assignment, and Cognition's paper already carries unusual terms: a productivity guarantee, worth up to $10 million, that funds a customer's usage when Devin returns less value than it costs [6]. Displacing Cognizant is the harder task. The consultancy signed for the fixed budget, the delivery window and every approval gate, and an enterprise buys modernization from the team that carries that risk [7].

## Three readings to watch

A delivered project at a logistics client and annualized revenue that doubled in four months are the evidence that the engineering is no longer the limit [5][7]. For Cognizant, the delivery saving is either margin or a discount clients will demand back. CoreWeave's compute bill arrives regardless of whose meter runs [5]. Watch three readings: the first enterprise logos Degnan lands directly, whether OpenAI ever discloses what changes hands on the meter, and whether Cognizant keeps the Odyssey saving as margin or rebates it to clients.

## Takeaway

Devin's engineering is delivering: its stated run rate doubled from $492 million to $1 billion in four months. Degnan's assignment is converting consultancy-delivered wins and a rival's login into direct enterprise contracts.
