# Coherent's $20 billion handshake: an unnamed customer funds a third of the build

> Coherent beat big and signed a $20 billion, five-year PhotonLink supply deal with an AI customer it refused to name, but the contract pays nothing until early 2028 while quarterly capex has already outrun operating profit.

[Coherent](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/coherent) lit up the tape twice on November 4 [4][7]. The quarter the Street knew was coming arrived bigger: [record revenue of $2.37 billion](https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2026/11/04/3395801/11543/en/coherent-corp-reports-first-quarter-fiscal-2027-results.html), up 49.9% year over year and 56% pro forma, non-GAAP EPS of $2.09 up 80%, and a December-quarter guide above expectations [4][7]. Shares rose 7% after hours [4][7].

The surprise came buried in the call: a [five-year supply agreement for the PhotonLink integrated-optics platform worth roughly $20 billion](https://www.bullished.co/coherent-lands-a-20-billion-five-year-ai-supply-deal-and-lifts-its-gross-margin-goal-above-037adf97/), signed with what CEO Jim Anderson called "a leading AI data center customer name you would definitely recognize [1][5]." He did not name it. Revenue begins ramping in early calendar 2028, on top of the previously announced [NVIDIA](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nvidia) agreement [1][5].

## Who funds the two years before the money arrives

That is the money question. PhotonLink pays nothing for more than two years, but the factories it anchors are being built now. [Fiscal Q1 capital expenditures hit $776 million](https://www.quantisnow.com/articles/coherent-q1-eps-tops-guide-by-0-04-on-2-37b-revenue-while-776m-capex-exceeds-operating-profit), seven and a half times the $104 million of a year earlier and 33% of revenue, exceeding the quarter's roughly $550 million of non-GAAP operating income [1][3][4]. Management guided capex higher again this quarter [1].

Anderson's funding answer: nearly every long-term agreement carries an upfront customer payment, prepayment or engineering fees, to co-fund capacity [1]. [Prepayments rose $270 million in the quarter](https://www.tmtbreakout.com/p/tmtb-applovin-app-arm-qcom-cohr-expe), about a third of that capex [2]. Shareholders fund the rest.

## The counterparty nobody can underwrite

A $20 billion contract with an unnamed buyer is faith, not a credit [1]. Bulls point to demand described as booked out through calendar 2027, a promised $3 billion revenue quarter by June, and a gross-margin target lifted above 45% by end-2028 [1]. Bears note no one can check the buyer's appetite, and the margin goal needs 4.4 more points on a two-year clock [1][3]. Meanwhile [Marvell's $115 billion stock deal for Lumentum, announced November 2](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/ai/articles/marvell-pays-115-billion-stock-180634358.html), leaves Coherent the last big independent optics supplier; management pitched that independence as the edge [6].

*Chart: **Capex ran 7.5x the year-ago quarter before the $20 billion deal pays a cent** Column chart of Coherent quarterly capital expenditures rising from 92 million dollars in the September 2024 quarter to 776 million in the September 2026 quarter*

*Coherent Corp. capital expenditures by calendar quarter, USD millions: fiscal Q1 2025 through fiscal Q1 2027 (Sep 2024 to Sep 2026). Sources: company_series from SEC filings and the fiscal Q1 FY2027 earnings release and call, November 4, 2026. Management guided capex to rise sequentially again in fiscal Q2. [4][8]*

The watch item is arithmetic, not narrative: [prepayments versus capex](https://theinference.org/article/corning-doubled-ai-fiber-sales-and-collected-639-million-of-customer-deposits-the-stock-fell-14-1-anyway), each quarter. If customer checks keep covering a third of the build, the contracted story holds. If they thin out, shareholders are financing 2028 optimism at 2026 prices.

## Takeaway

Coherent's $20 billion contract pays nothing until early 2028; whether customer prepayments keep covering a third of record capex is the number to watch each quarter.
