# Comfort Systems beat on everything; five banks cut targets anyway, and the street mean sits 49% higher

> The AI data center contractor beat on revenue, earnings and a record $17.81 billion backlog, and five banks cut their price targets over margins within days, while the street's own mean target still sits 49% above the price.

On October 22, [Comfort Systems USA](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/comfort-systems), the Houston contractor whose crews install the mechanical and electrical systems inside AI data centers, reported [third-quarter revenue of $3.77 billion](https://www.ad-hoc-news.de/boerse/news/corporate-news/comfort-systems-usa-stock-q3-growth-and-cfo-succession-shape-week/70438221), ahead of the $3.40 billion [FactSet](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/factset) estimate and up from $2.45 billion a year earlier [1]. Net income reached $489.0 million, or $13.91 a diluted share, against a $12.85 estimate [1]. The print was clean. The week that followed was not.

## A $17.81 billion backlog, and technology customers are paying for it

[Backlog stood at $17.81 billion at September 30](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/comfort-systems-usa-fix-said-180454954.html), up from $14.06 billion at June 30 and $9.38 billion a year earlier, an eighth consecutive quarter of growth [1][2]. Technology-related work made up 59% of revenue for the first nine months of 2026, up from 42% [2]. Clients have contracted the work; shareholders fund the 22,700-person payroll that delivers it [2][3].

Management expects mid-40% same-store revenue growth for 2026 and mid-20% for 2027, with modular production space past 4 million square feet by year-end and toward 6 million by the end of 2027 [2].

## Five banks cut targets in two days

Across October 26 and 27, five banks lowered their price targets: DA Davidson to $1,850 from $2,100, Oppenheimer to $2,000 from $2,400 while keeping its Outperform rating [3][4], UBS to $1,900 from $2,225 [3], KeyBanc to $1,979 from $2,125 on a margin miss [5], [Stifel](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/stifel) to $1,808 from $1,910 on margin pressure [6]. [The shares still fell 7.06% to $1,232.66 on October 29](https://theinference.org/article/comfort-systems-beat-everything-refused-the-ai-labs-and-the-stock-fell-9) [7].

*Chart: **Five cuts in two days, yet every new target tops the $1,233 price** Range chart comparing each of five banks' Comfort Systems USA twelve-month price target before and after the cuts of October 26 to 27, 2026: Oppenheimer $2,400 to $2,000, UBS $2,225 to $1,900, DA Davidson $2,100 to $1,850, KeyBanc $2,125 to $1,979, Stifel $1,910 to $1,808. Every new target remains above the $1,232.66 share price of October 29, 2026.*

## The filing shows margins the cuts do not

The published numbers complicate the bear case. Gross margin ran at 24.8% of revenue, exactly its year-ago level, and [operating margin improved to 16.6% from 15.5%](https://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&CIK=0001035983) [2]. The squeeze the banks flagged is mix, not collapse: chief financial officer Bill George pointed to more equipment and materials in the cost of large projects, purchase-accounting charges from acquisitions and the early stage of big jobs, and said gross profit per hour worked keeps improving [2].

*Chart: **Gross margin slipped two straight quarters from its Q1 2026 peak, still at its year-ago level** Line chart of Comfort Systems USA quarterly gross margin as a percent of revenue from Q2 2024 through Q3 2026: 20.1, 21.1, 23.2, 22.0, 23.5, 24.8, 25.5, 26.3, 25.9 and 24.8 percent. Margin slips for two straight quarters from the Q1 2026 peak of 26.3 percent but ends at its year-ago level.*

## The Street argues with its own average

Within seven days of the print, [the consensus estimate for 2026 earnings per share rose to $49.72](https://kalkinemedia.com/us/stocks/midcap/can-comfort-systems-usa-nysefix-sustain-its-backlog-growth) from $48.35, and the 2027 figure climbed to $65.30 [8]. The mean analyst target of $1,916.88 sits 48.76% above the last close of $1,288.61 [3]. The street that cut five times in two days still prices the stock about half higher.

## The doubling's finance chief leaves at the peak

Bill George, chief financial officer for 30 years, retires once the 2026 annual report is filed, and [Julie Shaeff](https://theinference.org/markets/people/julie-shaeff), the company's chief accounting officer, takes the seat [1]. The ex-dividend date is November 12 [3]. Management expects 2027 gross margins to stay within recent ranges [2], so the open question runs into next year: whether the margin give is a phase of mix, or the price of scaling to $17.81 billion of contracted work.

## Takeaway

Comfort Systems beat on revenue, earnings and a record $17.81 billion backlog, yet five banks cut price targets within days over margin worry; the filing shows mix effects, not collapse, and the street's mean target still sits 49% above the price.
