# Comfort Systems reports October 22 with a record $14.06 billion backlog and doubts about 2027 growth

> Comfort Systems USA, the contractor that cools and wires AI data centers, posts third-quarter results after the close on October 22. The fight is over whether its record $14.06 billion backlog is compounding demand or 2027 orders arriving early.

## The AI buildout's index reports Thursday

[Comfort Systems USA](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/comfort-systems) (NYSE: FIX), the Houston contractor that installs the cooling, wiring and mechanical systems inside [AI data centers](https://theinference.org/article/ai-is-rewriting-the-power-bill-these-six-companies-collect-different-pieces), reports [third-quarter results](https://www.marketbeat.com/instant-alerts/upcoming-comfort-systems-usa-fix-set-to-announce-quarterly-earnings-on-thursday-2026-10-15/) after the close on Thursday, October 22 [1]. Analysts expect $12.85 of earnings per share on $3.39 billion of revenue, against $8.25 a share a year earlier [1][2]. Up 83.8% this year, the shares have become the buildout's index, sitting about 26% below the one-year high of $2,073.99 at $1,538.84 [1][3].

## Backlog gives the bull case its receipts

Backlog, the signed work not yet built, is the bull case in one number: a record $14.06 billion on June 30, against $12.45 billion in March and $8.12 billion a year earlier [4]. Technology work climbed to 58% of first-half revenue from 40% [3]. [Second-quarter revenue rose 50.3%](https://www.ad-hoc-news.de/boerse/news/nachboerse/comfort-systems-usa-stock-reports-3-27-billion-second-quarter-revenue/70245807) to $3.27 billion, earnings per share rose 92% to $12.53, and free cash flow hit $999.3 million [1][5]. Management itself cautioned that advance customer payments flattered that cash [3].

## The estimates stopped moving a month ago

The skeptic case is that the easy math is behind it. Estimates for 2026 and 2027 sat unchanged through the 30 days to mid-October even as the stock rallied, and consensus models revenue growth of 42.1% this year slowing to 18.2% next [3]. At 30.2 times forward earnings against an industry average of 22.1, the stock-research firm Zacks [cut its own rating from Buy on October 5 to Sell on October 12](https://es.tradingview.com/news/zacks:89c615908094b:0-comfort-systems-rich-valuation-after-84-rally-is-caution-warranted/) [3][6].

Insiders sold $43.2 million of stock in 90 days, including a $25.8 million sale by executive chairman Brian Lane [1]. [Morgan Stanley](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/morgan-stanley)'s [October survey of chief information officers](https://www.msn.com/en-us/technology/tech-companies/dell-leads-cio-spending-plans-as-hardware-prices-jump/ar-AA2efrTf) sharpens the question: 43% of them have pulled some 2027 server spending into 2026, and more than 70% expect hardware budgets to flatten or decline by 2028 [7]. That survey polls hardware buyers, not construction clients, so it is adjacent evidence rather than proof.

## Two readings settle it on Thursday

The bullish case still has Wall Street's backing: ten analysts rate the stock Moderate Buy with a mean target of $2,082.86, above the share price [1]. Buy ratings have also come from a [Seeking Alpha](https://seekingalpha.com/article/4953378-comfort-systems-usa-a-sneaky-winner-in-the-ai-infrastructure-buildout) columnist and the Indonesian investing platform [Pluang](https://pluang.com/en/news-feed/comfort-systems-usa-pemenang-tersembunyi-dalam-pembangunan-infrastruktur-ai), and management said in July that [hyperscaler demand showed no sign of slowdown](https://www.theglobeandmail.com/investing/markets/stocks/FIX/pressreleases/3455148/comfort-systems-usa-posts-record-q2-2026-results/) [8][9][6].

Thursday turns on two readings: sequential backlog, up about 13% last quarter, and management's 2027 language, with same-store growth, which excludes acquisitions, guided to the mid-to-high 30s [3]. Holders benefit if backlog is still accelerating and management defends 2027; anyone buying at 30 times earnings pays if bookings flatten [3]. If the print disappoints, analysts will not raise those frozen 2027 estimates, and a 30-times multiple on halved growth compresses toward the industry's 22 [3].

## Takeaway

Thursday's print turns on sequential backlog and management's 2027 language: at 30.2 times forward earnings, the shares pay only if bookings keep accelerating.
