# CoreWeave builds across four continents on money that costs 15%

> CoreWeave switched on Copenhagen and committed to a four-continent AI backbone the same month its bonds fell below 80 cents and default odds passed 60%. November earnings must show backlog converting to cash before the expansion bill comes due.

[CoreWeave](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/coreweave) switched on most of its first Danish data center in Copenhagen on Tuesday and promised a petabit-scale "global AI backbone" looping four continents by mid-2027, all in the same month [its own bonds fell below 80 cents on the dollar](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/coreweave-ceo-responds-worry-over-160300708.html) [1][2]. The build is the right next link in the chain: AI workloads now move huge datasets between regions, and whoever owns the pipes between the GPUs captures the customer, not just the rental.

The open question is who funds it, because the money costs about 15% and the bond market is voting no [2].

## The engineering is real and worth naming

The Copenhagen site, DEN01, runs [Nvidia](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nvidia) Blackwell systems on high-speed networking and sends its surplus heat into a local district heating network, taking CoreWeave to [nine European data centers across five geographies](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/ai/articles/coreweave-expands-ai-cloud-footprint-105412073.html) [1]. The backbone adds connection points in the UAE, India, Indonesia, Singapore, Australia, Korea and Japan, with deployment starting later this quarter [1]. CoreWeave is the builder doing the middle work between Nvidia's chips and customers' workloads, and the position deserves to win. Winning, though, requires cash.

## The financing is where the story turns

CoreWeave's revenue backlog stood at about $104 billion as of June 30, which we covered last week as a backlog resting on capacity it has not yet switched on; backlog is revenue promised over years, not cash in hand [2]. Against it sit roughly $35 billion of debt, about $7.5 billion of it due within 12 months [2].

The squeeze is visible in the income statement: second-quarter net interest expense of $640 million ran five times adjusted operating income of $128 million [2]. Last week the 9.625% notes due 2032 [traded below 80 cents at roughly a 14.8% yield](https://daily.semidoped.com/p/daily-update-october-16th-2026), and credit-default swaps implied better-than-60% default odds [2][3].

[Gartner](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/gartner) sizes the industry's problem at $8.5 trillion of revenue needed through 2030 against no more than $3.6 trillion expected, and predicts more than 80% of neoclouds will stop operating independently by 2030 [2]. [Morgan Stanley](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/morgan-stanley) cut its target to $70, saying financing uncertainty has reduced visibility into whether CoreWeave can deploy its contracted capacity; UBS kept Buy at $105 [1]. [Jensen Huang](https://theinference.org/markets/people/jensen-huang) [says the cost of capital is "actually decreasing"](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/coreweaves-not-secret-weapons-price-233000657.html) and Nvidia stands ready to support neoclouds, and his support lifted the stock, but a blessing is not a refinancing [4].

## What November must show

November's earnings call has to convert the memo into numbers: how fast backlog becomes cash, what new debt will cost, and how long today's chips stay productive [2]. If Copenhagen and the backbone are paid for by contracts already cashing in, the doubters are wrong in a way that matters. If not, this buildout becomes the write-down case study, and the lesson for every neocloud is that demand does not pay for silicon, cash flow does.

## Takeaway

Copenhagen and the four-continent backbone are the right build for CoreWeave, but with bonds below 80 cents, default odds above 60% and free cash flow sinking, November earnings must show backlog converting to cash.
