# Corning bets $585 million on AI fiber, and Monday's earnings decide if it was worth it

> Corning approved a $585 million fiber expansion on AI data-center demand days before earnings that will show whether that demand survives at the price the stock already charges for it.

[Corning](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/corning) is spending [$585 million to expand the world's first optical fiber plant](https://theinference.org/article/corning-just-bet-585-million-that-the-ai-fiber-shortage-lasts-for-years) in Wilmington, North Carolina, adding 414 jobs, and when the company reports earnings on Monday, October 27, investors get to vote on whether that buildout is foresight or capacity bought at the top [1][2]. The capacity case rests on contracted demand. The risk case rests on price. Monday's print tests the part that is still unproven. [1][2]

## The demand is contracted, not hoped for

AI data centers need enormous quantities of fiber to wire their GPUs together, and Corning names the buyers behind Project Pearl II: [four multibillion-dollar deals signed this year](https://www.wilmingtonbiz.com/government/2026/10/21/corning_moves_forward_with_wilmington_expansion/27956) with [Amazon](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/amazon), [Meta](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/meta), [AT&T](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/at-and-t) and [NVIDIA](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nvidia), supplying optical fiber and expanding the company's North Carolina manufacturing footprint [2]. That first hop is observable, not projected: signed contracts, not forecasts. The company also says demand from AI network operators and telecom networks is driving growth in its optical communications business [1].

## Small grants, real wages

The second hop is the expansion itself, approved after New Hanover County put up $3 million and the City of Wilmington $2 million in annual payments, contingent on Corning meeting job, wage and investment targets [2]. The incentive is reduced proportionally if targets are missed, with recapture provisions if the company fails outright [2].

Those recapture clauses protect the county's payments, not shareholder capital: the $585 million is Corning's money, and the grants are small against it [2]. The third hop lands on real people: 339 production and maintenance roles averaging $77,000, 60 salaried engineers averaging $119,000, and 15 support engineers averaging $132,000, in a region where the average wage is about $70,000 [2]. That is AI adoption paying local wages, which is where the benefits should land.

## What the bears are actually pricing

Now the risk, which is where shareholders live. JPMorgan [cut its price target from $170 to $165](https://www.ad-hoc-news.de/boerse/news/vorboerse/corning-inc-stock-jpmorgan-cuts-target-to-usd-165-00-pre-market/70396627) while keeping a Neutral rating, and the stock closed October 23 at $123.69, a market cap of about $106.6 billion at roughly 58 times trailing earnings, with [the technical screen showing zero buy and ten sell signals](https://www.tradingkey.com/markets/stocks/glw/technical) across indicators and moving averages [3][4]. The bears are not disputing fiber demand; they are saying it is already in the price.

Pricing is also where management has pointed the risk itself: [our October 21 coverage](https://theinference.org/article/ai-fiber-prices-may-run-5-times-2025-levels-but-corning-s-ceo-says-price-is-not-the-profit-story) reported the CEO's view that price is not the profit story. Read both ways, that cuts at the expansion: if fiber pricing mean-reverts after the current shortage, the new Wilmington capacity still ships contracted volume, just at thinner margins, and shareholders eat the difference.

## What Monday's print decides

The October 27 report answers the question with two numbers [3][4]. If optical communications revenue grows and fiber pricing holds rather than being bought with volume discounts, the expansion camp wins: Corning built capacity into demand that persists. If revenue grows mainly through volume while pricing slips, the valuation camp wins: Corning top-ticked the fiber shortage and locked in capacity for a demand curve the market has already priced at 58 times earnings [3][4]. Either way, the Wilmington jobs are real; what Monday decides is whether shareholders get paid for building them. [3][4]

## Takeaway

Corning's $585 million Wilmington expansion ships into four signed hyperscaler and carrier contracts, but at 58 times trailing earnings Monday's report must show fiber pricing holding, not just volume growing.
