# Crusoe says it cut switchgear lead time 40% and borrowed $700 million against turbines

> Crusoe, the company behind OpenAI's Abilene data center, now builds the electrical gear that decides when a hall can be energized, and has drawn $700 million of debt secured by power equipment. What gets tested next is the lead-time premium of ABB, GE Vernova, Eaton and Vertiv.

[Crusoe](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/crusoe) has stopped waiting in line for the electrical gear that decides when its AI data centers can switch on: it now builds that gear itself, and it has borrowed against the generators that feed it. That changes what a neocloud has to own, and it moves the investable question off Crusoe's GPU book and onto the lead times that ABB, [GE Vernova](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/ge-vernova), [Eaton](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/eaton) and [Vertiv](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/vertiv) sell against.

Crusoe builds AI data centers on cheap, stranded energy and leases them up the chain: at its Abilene, Texas site, the flagship of [OpenAI](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/openai)'s Stargate build-out program, OpenAI leases from [Oracle](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/oracle), which leases from Crusoe [1]. It is a neocloud, the category of specialist AI clouds ([CoreWeave](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/coreweave) and [Nebius](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nebius) are others) that build their own capacity and rent it out, and it earns nothing until a hall is energized.

Since [our October 30 piece](https://theinference.org/article/crusoe-says-every-gpu-is-sold-through-2028-coreweave-s-record-15-76-bond-yield-says-otherwise) on Crusoe's sold-out GPU book, three moves have landed: the in-house switchgear claim on October 30, a [SemiAnalysis](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/semianalysis) thread on the gear queues on November 2, and, on November 4, an analyst note re-disclosing the power-equipment loan plus fresh detail on its Spark Liquid modular unit.

## The queue Crusoe cut, and the one it cannot yet measure

SemiAnalysis, a research firm that tracks the semiconductor and data-center supply chain, puts switchgear and transformer lead times at [12 to 18 months in its Industrials Model](https://fourweekmba.com/ai-openais-abilene-builder-crusoe-cuts-power-gear-wait-by-40/), long enough that hyperscalers now order the gear during scoping, before vertical construction starts [1]. The gear matters because a site cannot energize without it: medium-voltage switchgear takes power in at 11 to 33 kilovolts, protects and meters it, and distributes it to the transformers beside the data hall [1].

The gas-insulated version Crusoe builds seals the live parts in tanks, which shrinks the footprint and suits the factory-built power skids that modular data centers run on [1].

## Crusoe's claim: 40% off its own queue, measured in no weeks

Crusoe co-founder Cully Cavness said on October 30 that Crusoe Industries, the company's manufacturing arm, now builds that gear in-house, cutting Crusoe's lead time on it by 40%, and that Crusoe is one of only three approved US makers of this class of ABB, the Swiss-Swedish electrical group's, gas-insulated switchgear [1].

SemiAnalysis separately reported that Crusoe earlier took low-voltage switchgear from vendor quotes of up to 100 weeks to about 22 [1]. The caveat matters when pricing the claim: Crusoe gave no weeks for medium voltage, so the 40% cannot be set against the industry's 12-to-18-month range, and the low-voltage figures are the ones that can be measured [1]. Crusoe's two Tulsa plants have already supplied more than 2,500 switchboards to Abilene [1].

## The debt and the speed are the same bet

On October 22 Crusoe announced a $700 million facility with Neuberger Specialty Finance, [secured by ordered power-generation equipment](https://bytevyte.com/crusoe-gas-turbine-loan-collateral/) rather than real estate or GPUs [2], a deal [we covered when it surfaced](https://theinference.org/article/neuberger-s-700-million-crusoe-loan-is-secured-by-gas-turbines-the-new-collateral-of-ai) and one that resurfaced in an analyst note on November 4 [3].

The money funds power infrastructure that energizes Crusoe's AI factories directly, behind the meter, past grid interconnection queues that can run for years [4]. Crusoe's Nick Sammut, who leads strategic finance, called it a way to ["secure long-lead power generation assets aligned with development timelines"](https://www.microgridknowledge.com/artificial-intelligence/news/55415069/behind-the-meter-power-draws-700-million-bet-as-ai-demand-surges) [4]. Crusoe was not alone that day: Atlas Energy Solutions arranged a $424 million bridge loan for its own power equipment, a second data point that lenders are pricing on-site generation as a financeable asset class [2].

Here is the tension in one sentence: Crusoe CEO Chase Lochmiller said on October 27 that angst over neocloud debt is ["overblown and is a bit of an overreaction"](https://seekingalpha.com/news/4658267-coreweave-other-neoclouds-rebound-as-crusoe-ceo-says-recent-selloffs-overblown) [5], and in the same stretch his company took equipment-backed debt on turbines whose supplier has already changed once, because [the $1.25 billion order for Boom Supersonic turbines was terminated](https://theinference.org/article/crusoe-and-boom-supersonic-scrapped-their-1-25-billion-turbine-deal-days-after-crusoe-s-3-9-billion-round) [2]. The facility sits alongside September's Series F, which valued Crusoe at $30.9 billion after the investment [2].

## The modular unit turns a site into a product

Crusoe [introduced Spark Liquid, the sixth generation of its factory-built modular AI data center](https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/crusoe-introduces-crusoe-spark-liquid-its-next-generation-modular-ai-factory-to-power-crusoe-cloud-1036648788), on October 21: up to 3.5 megawatts of compute per unit, with five times the density of earlier Spark generations and a closed-loop cooling system that does not evaporate water, engineered for [Nvidia](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nvidia)'s GB300 NVL72 and Vera Rubin NVL72 racks; production joins the company's Brighton, Colorado line in 2027, so nothing from it has shipped yet [6].

Coverage on November 4 added that the platform [aligns with Nvidia's DSX POD](https://www.datacenterknowledge.com/modular-data-centers/modular-ai-data-centers-gain-ground-as-crusoe-debuts-unit), the chipmaker's reference blueprint for factory-integrated AI infrastructure, and that Crusoe sits on an eight-partner container list with Eaton, Schneider Electric and Vertiv [7]. Crusoe says a unit can [go live in as little as three months from a ready site](https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/crusoe-announces-support-for-nvidia-dsx-pod-bringing-field-proven-crusoe-spark-platform-to-the-expanding-modular-ecosystem-1036648797) [8]; Nvidia's design still requires the customer to bring a prepared site with power, water and network [7].

## Three disclosures would settle whether the speed is real

Watch Crusoe's medium-voltage lead time stated in weeks, a megawatt figure for what the Neuberger facility actually buys (neither company has disclosed one [2]), and the order books at GE Vernova, whose latest 10-Q cites switchgear and transformer demand in its Electrification backlog [1].

Crusoe is trading capital and execution risk for time on the one asset its rents depend on, an energized hall, and its lender has underwritten exactly that trade by taking turbines as collateral [2]. A neocloud earns rent only when a hall is energized, and Crusoe now owns the gear that sets that date. If its queue keeps shrinking while the industry's stays put, the lead-time premium that ABB, GE Vernova, Eaton and Vertiv charge is the next thing to be repriced.

## Takeaway

Crusoe's 40% lead-time cut carries no weeks to compare against, but its $700 million turbine-backed loan shows lenders now price energized halls as collateral, and the lead-time premium ABB, GE Vernova, Eaton and Vertiv charge is the next thing to be repriced.
