# Datadog bills $1.30 per AI credit against $23 per host, and November 4 earnings decide which wins

> The security rally of October 23 lifted Datadog for the wrong reason. Its $1.30 AI credit bills agent activity, its host meter bills servers that agents let customers shrink, and November 4 earnings decide which meter wins.

[Datadog](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/datadog) closed at $269.65 on October 23, up 4.62%, with [Palo Alto Networks, Okta, Cloudflare and Zscaler all up 5% or more](https://uk.finance.yahoo.com/news/palo-alto-networks-datadog-zscaler-060039470.html) [3]. The trigger was [AI-discovered PHP flaws that took European government sites offline](https://www.tradingkey.com/analysis/stocks/us-stocks/262236289-cybersecurity-stocks-crowdstrike-cloudflare-rally-ai-vulnerability-discovery-php-flaw-tradingkey) [3][4].

But the more durable story sits on Datadog's own rate card, and the November 4 earnings report will read it out: the company now bills AI in credits ($1.30 each on demand, sold in 500-credit monthly bundles that do not roll over) while its host meter still anchors the bill [at a reported $23 per host a month](https://shattered.io/datadog-pricing-vs-grafana-cloud-vs-new-relic-2026/) [1]. Those two meters move in opposite directions as customers deploy agents.

## A host meter shrinks when a customer optimizes

A host-based bill charges for servers that exist; an AI credit charges for each agent activity, such as a Bits AI query. A customer that uses AI agents to watch its own infrastructure needs fewer of both: fewer hosts, because agents let it drop redundant telemetry, and more credits, because every agent run is billed.

Datadog's largest customer, an AI company, [used less of the platform in the quarter just closed](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/datadog-soars-5-bofa-lifts-160606310.html) [2]. That is the host meter shrinking. The question for November 4 is whether credits grew enough to cover it [2].

## The guidance already shows the slowdown

Datadog guided its third quarter, reported before the open on November 4, to $1.14 billion of revenue at the midpoint, about 29% growth, down from 36% in the second quarter [2]. Growth had been accelerating for five straight quarters before the guided turn.

## Grafana is repricing the meter from the other side

Datadog is not the only vendor redrawing its meter. Grafana Cloud switches its AI Assistant Watchers from per-watcher billing to token usage on December 1, the first hard date in this repricing [1].

Grafana also sells Adaptive Telemetry, which it claims cuts average customer telemetry spend by 30% to 50%, as a product [1]. The vendor camp splits accordingly: Datadog sells credits that grow with agent activity; Grafana sells software whose job is to make billable telemetry disappear. Both pitches land on the same budget line, and the customer will pick the meter that shrinks its bill.

## What November 4 has to show

The test on November 4 is specific: whether Datadog discloses AI or credit revenue growing faster than its host-based business, and whether the largest customer's reduced usage stabilizes. If credits are replacing hosts, revenue guidance would firm even as customers cut fleets. If credits are merely sitting beside hosts, the 29% growth rate keeps eroding.

The stock trades at about 97 times forward earnings [2], a price that assumes the meter war breaks Datadog's way. The print decides whether that assumption holds.

## Takeaway

Datadog now bills AI in $1.30 credits and servers at $23 per host, two meters that move opposite ways as customers deploy agents, and the November 4 print shows which one is winning.
