# Dell booked a $95 billion AI backlog in September. Memory has repriced since

> The AI-server backlog was booked on September 1 and memory has repriced since, while the inventory balance doubled into the repricing. The estimated November 24 report decides whether the server margin holds at 15% or slides toward last year's 8.8%.

On November 6, [Dell Technologies](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/dell-technologies) closed at $335.36, up 6% from the prior day's $316.91 but still down 43% from its September 17 record of $588.40 [1][2][3][6]. Nothing Dell has filed changed in those seven weeks; the last report remains [the September 1 release](https://financefeeds.com/dell-stock-prediction-424-30-bull-680-90-bear-304-12/), with the fiscal third-quarter print estimated for November 24 [1][2]. What moved is the price of the parts, and the part Dell's own management fears most is memory.

## Three legs down, and Dell filed nothing new

The slide ran in three legs. On October 30, [Intel's warning that PC units would fall 12% in 2026 and 10% more in 2027](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/dell-fell-nearly-11-intel-133026942.html) took Dell down 10.77% to $424.30 [1][2]. On November 2 the chip rout spread, and Dell fell 7.43% to $392.78 [3]. On November 5, a post-midterm selloff hit AI server builders while sparing PC makers, and Dell sank to $316.91 as [HP](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/hp) Inc. slipped just 2% [4]. Traders were repricing AI hardware, not Dell's filings.

## The backlog was booked in September; memory has repriced since

The record $95 billion AI-server backlog was booked with $60.9 billion of July-quarter orders, and [the fiscal 2027 guide](https://theinference.org/article/dell-is-up-347-as-its-192-billion-guide-passes-the-memory-bill-to-customers-micron-sees-tightness-to-2028) carries $192 billion of revenue and $74 billion of AI-server sales, with $32.533 billion delivered in the first half [1]. The inventories feeding that backlog doubled from $10.437 billion at January 30 to $21.290 billion by July 31 [1].

Memory prices have risen since, the pressure [Intel](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/intel) says is already shrinking the PC market [2]. The backlog was priced when those components were cheaper; that is the read the November 24 print tests, not a fact the filings state [2]. Chief financial officer David Kennedy calls DRAM and NAND "by far the big brother" among short parts and says "any part associated within an AI box is short to some degree" [2].

## Supermicro printed the squeeze first

[Supermicro](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/super-micro), the purest AI-server assembler, [put a first hard number on the squeeze on November 3](https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/supermicros-sales-quadruple-as-cash-drains-rapid-earnings-reaction/ar-AA2gHz79): gross margin fell to 12.7% from 17.5% a quarter earlier on $19.9 billion of sales, and operations burned $434 million of cash [5]. [Our October 31 piece](https://theinference.org/article/hewlett-packard-enterprise-fell-6-42-after-intel-s-memory-warning-with-11-8-billion-of-inventory) flagged the same dynamic at [Hewlett Packard Enterprise](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/hewlett-packard-enterprise), with $11.8 billion of inventory [7].

## November 24 decides which claim holds

The market carries two live prices at once: 29 analysts at a $595 average target against a stock that closed the week at $335.36 [1][6]. Dell's Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG), the server division, must hold its 15.0% operating margin, up from 8.8% a year earlier, while Client Solutions revenue clears last year's $12.5 billion [1][2]. A margin back toward 8.8% would erase about $1.97 billion of operating income on one quarter's ISG revenue, the arithmetic of the memory bill [1]. A CSG miss would put Intel's PC warning on Dell's income statement [2].

*Chart: **Dell gave back 43% in seven weeks, then rebounded 6% on November 6** Line chart of Dell Technologies daily closing prices from September 17 to November 6, 2026, falling from $588.40 to a low of $316.91 on November 5 before rebounding to $335.36 on November 6.*

*Nasdaq daily closes as reported; the November 5 close is the prior close given in the November 6 session data. Sources: FinanceFeeds (1), Yahoo Finance/TIKR (2), 24/7 Wall St. (3, 6). [1][2][3][6]*

The backlog story and the margin story can both be true until the parts bill arrives. The November 24 report, a date MarketBeat says may change, decides which one the $95 billion converts at: server margins, or the component prices of late 2026 [1].

## Takeaway

Dell's November 24 report is the first test of a $95 billion backlog priced before memory repriced: hold 15% ISG margins, or the parts bill erases about $1.97 billion of quarterly operating income.
