# Democrats won the midterms; CoreWeave's $4.4 billion of 2026 debt now waits on Texas

> The election does not touch CoreWeave's signed contracts. It touches the megawatts still to energize this year and the $4.4 billion due before the backlog cash flows, and the bond market has been voting on that for weeks.

## The vote landed on delivery, not contracts

Democrats took both chambers of Congress on November 3, and Texas elected Gina Hinojosa its first Democratic governor in more than 30 years, on a campaign that called for a temporary statewide pause on new data centers until lawmakers pass protections. [2][3] [CoreWeave](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/coreweave), one of the four leading neoclouds renting [Nvidia](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nvidia) GPUs to AI developers, [fell as much as 3.2 percent in premarket trading on November 4](https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/26/11/62856685/crwv-apld-iren-stocks-slip-as-brad-gerstner-warns-democratic-midterm-gains-could-put-10-15-gw-of-ai-data-center-capacity-at-risk), and peers [IREN](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/iren) and [Applied Digital](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/applied-digital) slid beside it. [1][2] The repricing began weeks before the polls closed. [1]

## A third of the build sits in two states that flipped

Texas and Georgia together account for roughly a third of all AI data-center spending and projects, and both chose Democratic governors. [2] The friction predates the ballot: the project tracker Data Center Watch counted [45 data-center projects worth $68 billion disrupted by local opposition](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/ai/articles/ai-data-center-stocks-drop-100424346.html) in the second quarter of 2026 alone. [2]

Altimeter Capital's [Brad Gerstner](https://theinference.org/markets/people/brad-gerstner) sized what could slip on the All-In Podcast: consensus expects 43 gigawatts of new US capacity to come online in 2027, against about 38 gigawatts of cumulative US capacity expected by the end of 2026, and he warned "at least 10 to 15 gigawatts of the expected build" may not come online. [1]

## The contracts are safe. The schedule is not.

None of it touches signed revenue. Ninety-eight percent of CoreWeave's contracts are take-or-pay, meaning customers pay whether or not they use the capacity, and [the backlog stood near $104 billion at June 30](https://coinpaper.com/37493/michael-intrator-went-from-trading-natural-gas-to-building-coreweave-with-104-billion-in-ai-contracts), before more than $25 billion of additional commitments announced early in the third quarter. [4][5]

What the vote can touch is the delivery behind the backlog. Full-year 2026 capex guidance of $35 to $39 billion buys roughly one gigawatt, and 650 megawatts came online in the first half, leaving [about 350 megawatts to energize after the election](https://theinference.org/article/coreweave-s-104-2-billion-backlog-depends-on-2-7-gigawatts-it-has-not-switched-on), under a political map drawn overnight. [4] The obligations do not wait: $35.6 billion of debt principal at June 30, and $640 million of net interest in a single quarter, roughly a quarter of revenue. [5][6]

## The credit market moved first

CoreWeave's June unsecured bonds traded at 76.5 to 81 cents on the dollar in mid-October, [yielding above 15 percent](https://theinference.org/article/coreweave-builds-across-four-continents-on-money-that-costs-15), and [the five-year default swap hit a record 1,194.5 basis points](https://cryptobriefing.com/coreweave-credit-risk-record-high/), a market-implied five-year default probability above 60 percent. [7][8][9] About $4.4 billion of debt comes due by the end of 2026, $6.2 billion more in 2027. [8][9] In September, when [the interest bill was first tallied here](https://theinference.org/article/coreweave-mortgages-the-future-its-founders-take-cash), the swaps priced roughly a coin flip and the stock traded at $87.59; both marks have since given way. [10]

*Chart: **The bills compound: capex up sixfold, debt up fivefold in two years** Column chart of CoreWeave quarterly capital expenditure rising from 1.2 to 7.7 billion dollars and total debt rising from 10.6 to 51.6 billion dollars over eight quarters.*

## The bull case, and the gap it leaves

Morningstar still rates CoreWeave four stars with a $108 fair value, guesses the bond-market panic has had minimal effect on the company's ability to borrow, and expects take-or-pay bookings from [Microsoft](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/microsoft), [OpenAI](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/openai) and [Meta](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/meta) to keep revenue scaling. [4] Nvidia has agreed to buy unsold CoreWeave capacity through April 2032, a genuine floor. [9] [Some market commentators called the election fear overblown](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/texas-goes-blue-gina-hinojosas-071218321.html), noting that many Republicans also campaigned on tighter permitting. [3]

None of that pays the $4.4 billion due before the backlog cash flows: a take-or-pay contract protects revenue if the customer holds, not a delivery schedule that just acquired a political variable.

## November 10 is the first reading on the new map

[CoreWeave reports third-quarter results on November 10](https://www.morningstar.com/stocks/coreweave-shares-are-down-45-past-month-is-stock-buy-ahead-earnings), its first disclosure since the vote. [4] Three numbers decide the next month: megawatts energized in the second half against the roughly 350 implied, whether incremental commitments keep landing on take-or-pay terms, and whether year-end maturities refinance at anything near the coupons the company has been paying [4]. The backlog is contracted for years. The coupons are due in weeks.

## Takeaway

The election leaves CoreWeave's $104 billion backlog untouched, but it adds a political variable to the megawatts still to energize and the $4.4 billion due before that backlog cash flows; the bond market has been pricing that gap for weeks.
