# Dropbox cuts 200 jobs and loses its CTO with the stock trading above its average analyst target

> The restructure announced October 28 takes full force on November 18, when chief technology officer Ali Dasdan steps down and 57 headquarters jobs end. Before that comes the November 5 earnings print, already pre-announced as meeting or beating guidance, with the stock 11% above its $32.40 average analyst target.

## The November 5 print opens with the stock already above the street

[Dropbox](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/dropbox) closed October 30 at $36.25, up 30.4% this year, against [a $32.40 average analyst target](https://www.marketscreener.com/news/dropbox-inc-reaffirms-earnings-guidance-for-the-third-quarter-of-2026-ce785cd2de8ef320) that sits 10.62% below the close, from seven analysts whose consensus rating is Underperform [1].

[BofA](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/bank-of-america)'s Matt Bullock [reiterated Sell with a $33 target on October 29](https://www.theglobeandmail.com/investing/markets/stocks/DBX/pressreleases/8548756/analysts-conflicted-on-these-technology-names-dropbox-dbx-and-extreme-networks-extr/) [2]; [Citi](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/citigroup)'s Steven Enders had [cut the stock to Sell from Neutral at $29 on September 24](https://markets.financialcontent.com/prnews/article/stockstory-2026-9-24-why-dropbox-dbx-shares-are-sliding-today), and DBX fell 4.5% that session [4]. [The most bullish target on the street is $42, the most cautious $23](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/ai-product-push-impact-dropbox-221603238.html) [3]. Between September 14 and October 15, insiders sold about $5.5 million across three disclosed sales and bought nothing [1]. Third-quarter results are due November 5 [1].

## The reset lands on November 18

Co-CEO [Ashraf Alkarmi](https://theinference.org/markets/people/ashraf-alkarmi) told employees on October 28 that Dropbox was [eliminating about 200 roles, roughly 9% of its global workforce](https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/dropbox-is-laying-off-roughly-9-of-its-workforce-read-the-memo/ar-AA2gfeTz), across engineering, product, design and general administration; for most affected staff, announcement day was their last day [5]. "In order to be successful, we can't take the same work and spread it across fewer people," he wrote [5].

[The same Form 8-K set the technology chief's exit](https://www.securities.io/dropbox-to-cut-9-of-workforce-as-cto-ali-dasdan-steps-down/): [Ali Dasdan](https://theinference.org/markets/people/ali-dasdan), who decided to move on, collects a $515,000 pro-rata bonus and about $1.3 million in cash when he steps down on November 18 [6]. [A WARN notice, the federal filing required before mass layoffs, covers 57 permanent jobs](https://hoodline.com/2026/10/dropbox-front-cut-110-san-francisco-jobs-as-bay-area-layoffs-near-14-500/) at the 50 Hawthorne Street headquarters in San Francisco, effective that same day, against 2,113 full-time employees at the end of 2025 [7]. The bill for the reset is $27 million to $33 million in cash, mostly paid in the fourth quarter [6].

## Cutting the people who build the product being sold

The cuts are framed as fuel for the AI story. [On the second-quarter call](https://www.theglobeandmail.com/investing/markets/stocks/DBX/pressreleases/3746772/dbx-q2-deep-dive-leadership-transition-and-ai-integration-shape-outlook/) Alkarmi said "We're embedding Dash intelligence directly into Dropbox itself", and 150,000 users have connected Dash, the AI search tool, to ChatGPT and Claude [8].

But the axe falls on engineering and product, exactly the functions an AI product needs, while AI features are already compressing gross margin through compute costs [8]. The top line explains the doubt: revenue has been pinned near $630 million for twelve straight quarters [9], and analyst consensus projects revenue staying broadly flat over the next three years, with the most bearish analysts modeling about $2.5 billion of 2029 revenue and a $23 target [3].

*Chart: **Twelve straight quarters pinned near $630 million** Column chart of Dropbox quarterly revenue from Q3 2023 to Q2 2026, twelve columns all between $0.625B and $0.644B, showing a flat trend.*

*Quarterly revenue, USD billions, from Dropbox SEC filings, Q3 2023 through Q2 2026, retrieved November 1, 2026. Twelve consecutive quarters within a $625 million to $644 million band. [9]*

## A five-year round trip in the stock, the best user growth in three years

The bears have dated receipts. Second-quarter revenue of $631.5 million was flat year over year, annual recurring revenue sat at $2.57 billion, also flat, and a $1,000 stake bought five years ago was worth $1,032 in late September, when DBX traded at $32.56 [8][4].

At the October 30 close of $36.25 the same stake would be worth about $1,150, still a five-year round trip [4]. Severance terms, 16 weeks of pay plus a week per completed year, land in a Bay Area where tech employers have disclosed nearly 14,500 job cuts in 2026, already above the 10,170 cut all of last year [5][7]. The bulls have theirs: paying users grew 96,000 to 18.19 million, the best net adds in three years, unlevered free cash flow hit $283.5 million, and non-GAAP operating margin ran at 39.7% [8][6].

*Chart: **The close sits above the average target, below the most bullish** Bars comparing Citi's $29 Sell target, the $32.40 street consensus, BofA's $33 Sell target, the $36.25 DBX close on October 30 and the $42 most bullish target, with the close above the first three but below the last.*

*Analyst price targets in US dollars against the October 30, 2026, close. Citi: Sell, $29, set September 24 (StockStory); street consensus: $32.40, 7 analysts, Underperform (MarketScreener); BofA: Sell, $33, reiterated October 29 (TipRanks); close: $36.25 (MarketScreener); most bullish target: $42 (Simply Wall St). [1][2][3][4]*

## A beat is already priced; the reset is not

Dropbox has said its third-quarter results will be in line with or above guidance for revenue, constant-currency revenue and non-GAAP operating margin, based on preliminary unaudited figures [6]. So November 5 is not a question of whether the quarter beats [6]. It is whether a beat bought with a smaller payroll, at a price above both published Sell targets and 11% above the street average, reads as growth or as margin defense [6].

## The tell on November 5

Watch two lines. One is revenue excluding FormSwift, the wind-down asset masking the core trend; the core grew 1.7% against 0.9% reported in the second quarter [6]. The other is Dash monetization appearing in revenue rather than only in compute costs [8]. A flat top line, a shrinking payroll, and a price above the street's average target: on November 5, one of the two camps gets paid [8][3].

## Takeaway

Dropbox pre-announced a third-quarter beat, then cut 200 jobs and its CTO; with revenue flat for twelve quarters and the stock 11% above the $32.40 street target, the November 5 print tests whether a leaner payroll reads as growth or margin defense.
