# Entergy earned $1.98, beat by 31 cents; Arkansas regulators get Google's battery terms November 9

> Entergy's Q3 beat looks like the AI-load story investors are paying for, but a third of it is weather. The real test of whether data-center growth compounds or triggers bill shock lands in Arkansas by noon on November 9.

[Entergy](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/entergy), the utility powering Google's West Memphis data center, beat forecasts this morning and told investors the AI buildout is on schedule. The more important news is not in the earnings at all: it lands by noon on November 9, when Arkansas regulators get Entergy's answer on whether the [Google](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/alphabet)-backed battery deal really costs other customers nothing. That answer, not the earnings beat, decides whether AI load is clean earnings or bill-shock political risk.

## The beat is strong, but a third of it is weather

The quarter itself is strong but not yet a pure data-center dividend. Entergy [reported $1.98 a share for the third quarter](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/entergy-reports-third-quarter-2026-financial-results-302925978.html), 31 cents above the $1.67 consensus, and narrowed its 2026 guidance to $4.35 to $4.45 [1][2]. But $0.24 of that $1.98 is an estimated weather benefit, against $0.06 a year ago [1][2].

*Chart: **Weather, not data centers, did a third of the Q3 beat** Column chart comparing Entergy's third-quarter EPS in 2025 and 2026, split between the estimated weather impact and earnings excluding weather, showing weather contributed a larger share of 2026 earnings.*

*Weather, not data centers, did a third of the Q3 beat [1]*

Strip the weather and the beat is smaller than the headline. The AI story is real: industrial sales grew on data center demand, the release names an expanded Google service agreement, and a $1.2 billion Louisiana transmission project was approved [1]. It is simply earlier in the chain than the stock price implies.

## The load is arriving. The financing is on trial.

Entergy wants to build $550.6 million of [Google-backed batteries](https://theinference.org/article/entergy-says-google-s-550-6-million-battery-build-costs-ratepayers-zero-and-the-arkansas-psc-tests-it), the 250 MW Driver and 100 MW Jones Mill units, both in service by June 2028, and recover the cost through its formula rate plan, the mechanism that lets it raise rates up to 4% a year without a formal rate case [3]. It told regulators Google's payments fully cover the projects, a zero-dollar bill impact plus a 4-cent fuel saving on a typical residential bill [3].

The commission's Order No. 14 demands the contract terms unsealed and a rate-impact test with the batteries removed [3]. Arkansans have reason to press: they [already absorbed a $5.77 monthly increase in June for three generation projects](https://www.arkansasonline.com/news/2026/oct/30/entergy-files-request-to-build-two-battery-storage-systems-google-data-center-west-memphis/), and the same filings show Google's contributions cover only costs up to 30% above estimates [3][4].

## The bottleneck is allocation, not demand

Here is the link the market keeps skipping. A data center contract does not become earnings until a regulator ratifies who pays for the wires, batteries and plants behind it. Entergy has the demand, the capital plan and the customers; what decides the outcome now is who pays.

Watch [the November 9 filing](https://theduckcurve.com/posts/entergy-arkansas-driver-jones-mill-batteries-google-application) and the January 4, 2027, hearing. If the commission upholds the "Google pays" structure, this becomes a repeatable template for utilities serving AI campuses, and Entergy's growth case compounds. If it forces renegotiation, the earnings are intact but the multiple re-rates, because every future hyperscaler deal inherits the doubt.

That is the trade to think through. My own view is unchanged: the AI power demand is as real as earnings get, and the builders who turn it into financed, regulator-approved projects are the ones creating the value. Entergy is doing that work. Regulators deciding who benefits from it are the next link in the chain, and they answer in seven days.

## Takeaway

Entergy's Q3 beat was strong but a third of it is weather; the stock's data-center story now hinges on Arkansas regulators deciding by November 9 whether Google fully pays for the $550.6 million battery build or ratepayers share the risk.
