# EPAM grows 2.3% but pledges $1.8 billion: the AI pivot runs on buybacks and cost cuts

> EPAM grew 2.3%, cut costs hard, invented an AI-native revenue line above $185 million, and replaced its buyback with a $1.8 billion pledge through 2029 while nine-month cash flow fell by a third. The gap between the story and the cash is the trade.

[EPAM Systems](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/epam-systems), the Newtown, Pennsylvania IT services firm, [filed its third-quarter results on November 5, 2026](https://www.stocktitan.net/sec-filings/EPAM/8-k-epam-systems-inc-reports-material-event-beb7222abb0b.html), and they read like two different companies in one envelope [1]. The old company: revenue of $1.426 billion, up just 2.3% year over year, and nine-month operating cash flow down to $250.1 million from $372.0 million a year earlier [1]. The new one: GAAP operating income up 21.4% to $175.9 million, GAAP diluted EPS up 32.5% to $2.53, and a $3.51 non-GAAP EPS that [beat the street's $3.40 by 11 cents](https://www.streetinsider.com/Earnings/EPAM+Systems+%28EPAM%29+Tops+Q3+EPS+by+11c%2C+Beats+on+Revenue%3B+Offers+FY26+EPS+Guidance/27293522.html) [1][3].

## The AI-native line EPAM invented

[The earnings slides](https://www.tradingview.com/news/urn:summary_document_slides:quartr.com:4252032:0-epam-ai-native-growth-and-stronger-profitability-underpin-raised-fy26-outlook-and-long-term-return-targets/) carry a category few peers report: AI-native revenue above $185 million, roughly a tenth of sales, with full-year profit guidance raised to $13.23–$13.31 in non-GAAP EPS against a $13.16 consensus [2][3]. That disclosure is the pivot's receipt. It also defines what is left: a legacy billable-hours base growing 2.5% organically in constant currency, which funds the story but does not tell it [1].

## The buyback is the headline

The Board replaced the $1 billion authorization from October 2025 with one worth up to $1.8 billion through December 31, 2029, about a quarter of EPAM's market cap, and committed to return at least 50% of free cash flow annually from 2027 through 2029 [1]. A $500 million accelerated share repurchase is expected the week of November 9, funded by cash on hand and borrowings under the existing credit facility [1]. That detail matters: the cash pile fell 25.5% during 2026 to $969.9 million, so the ASR leans partly on the bank [1].

## The industry around it is shrinking

[Cognizant](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/cognizant) [cut its 2026 constant-currency growth guidance to 4–4.4% on October 29](https://www.business-standard.com/companies/news/cognizant-trims-2026-revenue-growth-guidance-again-amid-macro-uncertainty-126102901592_1.html), its second cut this year, with CEO Ravi Kumar pointing to discretionary spending that "has not happened in the way it should have" [4]. [DXC Technology](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/dxc-technology) is in [advanced talks to sell its insurance software unit, its only clear grower, to Eldridge for about $2.4 billion](https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/exclusive-dxc-in-advanced-talks-to-sell-insurance-software-unit-for-24-billion-sources-say/ar-AA2fAxDp) after years of declining revenue [5]. EPAM's answer to the same squeeze is different: shrink the core, sell AI work, hand the cash to shareholders.

## What decides it

The pledge runs to 2029; the cash flow that must fund it fell by a third in nine months [1]. The test starts next week, when the $500 million ASR either lands on schedule or slips [1]. Watch whether AI-native revenue keeps climbing faster than the legacy base erodes; that gap is the whole trade.

## Takeaway

EPAM's margin beat and $1.8 billion return pledge mask a growth engine running on cost cuts and bank borrowings while nine-month cash flow fell by a third; the $500 million ASR next week is the first test.
