# Exa discloses $100 million of revenue at a 22x multiple, four days before DeepSeek set a $0.75 floor

> The agent-search company's first disclosed revenue mark, posted October 13 by CEO Will Bryk, pegs its May valuation at roughly 22 times annualized revenue. DeepSeek's $0.75 search API arrived four days later.

## The first revenue number, and the multiple it implies

Will Bryk, chief executive and co-founder of [Exa](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/exa), [put a number on his company for the first time on October 13](https://exa.ai/blog/100m-run-rate) [1]. Exa, whose API is the search engine an AI agent calls when it needs the live web, had passed $100 million in annualized revenue, grown "almost exactly 10x per year for 3 years," and now handles 2 billion requests a month from more than 200,000 teams [1].

The blog archive back to 2023 carries no earlier revenue figure [2]. The number prices the May financing: [a $250 million Series C](https://exa.ai/blog/announcing-series-c) led by Andreessen Horowitz at a $2.2 billion valuation [3], roughly 22 times the run rate disclosed five months later.

The raise was already on the record, as was the free-data push around it; the revenue line is the new fact, and it is what the price war now tests.

## Four days later, the floor dropped

On October 17, [DeepSeek](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/deepseek), the Chinese AI lab backed by the High-Flyer quant fund, [launched Search and Fetch APIs at $0.75 per 1,000 requests](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/ai/articles/deepseek-monetizes-agent-retrieval-layer-185236272.html), 9.3 times below Exa's $7 standard tier, and no established rival charged under $5 [4].

In late October, [Cloudflare](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/cloudflare) opened a beta Web Search API that resells results from Exa, Ceramic.ai and Linkup at providers' list prices with no markup [5], [a move this publication examined at the time](https://theinference.org/article/cloudflare-now-bills-agent-web-search-and-exa-priced-for-a-buyer-who-cannot-switch). Exa's answer, [a Lite tier at $4 per 1,000 shipped with Exa 3.0 on October 19](https://exa.ai/blog/exa-3) [6], still costs more than five times DeepSeek's rate.

*Chart: **DeepSeek set a new price floor at a ninth of Exa's standard search rate** Bar chart of pay-as-you-go prices per 1,000 search requests: DeepSeek $0.75, Exa Lite $4, Brave Search $5, Perplexity Sonar $5, Exa Auto $7, Tavily basic $8.*

## The quality premium is real, and narrower than claimed

What carries the price is measurable quality. In [an independent 40-query test published November 2](https://dev.to/ritza/firecrawl-vs-tavily-vs-exa-vs-deepseek-best-search-api-for-ai-agents-2026-27cc), Exa returned the best result set on 31 of 40 searches and was the only tool of four to surface Python 3.15.1, a release two days old [7].

The review site Rhumb scored Exa 8.7 against [Perplexity](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/perplexity)'s 6.8 across 20 dimensions [8]. But Exa 3.0's eight-benchmark sweep is self-reported, with no harness an outsider can re-run [8], and in the same independent test DeepSeek won on speed and price while failing all 10 PDF fetches and storing customer data in China [7].

## November's bills are the tell

Bryk's wager is volume over price: agents will search 1000x more than humans by 2030, because information, not model intelligence, is the bottleneck [1]. DeepSeek's free window closed and billing began on November 1 [4], so the first real volume data now exists. The 10x compounding and the 22x multiple live or die together [4]. If Exa's two billion monthly requests keep compounding, 22x looks cheap; if Lite has to chase 75 cents, the multiple breaks first [4].

## Takeaway

Exa's first disclosed revenue mark, $100 million annualized, prices its May Series C at 22 times run rate; DeepSeek's $0.75 per 1,000 search API and Cloudflare's no-markup resale now test whether volume compounds fast enough to hold it.
