# Fortinet beat on every line and still lost $34 billion: a third of its billings growth was price

> Fortinet beat every number Wall Street tracks, raised billings guidance a third time, and still lost $34 billion in one session. The arithmetic the CEO volunteered, about a third of billings growth was price, explains the verdict.

[Fortinet](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/fortinet) reported its best quarter of the year on October 28 and got erased for it [1]. Revenue rose 20% to $2.08 billion, adjusted earnings beat at $0.91 against $0.86 expected, and billings climbed 29% to $2.34 billion [1]. The next morning the stock fell 27% intraday, its worst day since August 2025, wiping out $34 billion while [Palo Alto Networks](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/palo-alto-networks) [lost 3.5%](https://www.cnbctv18.com/market/stocks/alphabet-servicenow-fortinet-rout-erases-usd-600-billion-12-pc-of-india-market-cap-20022784.htm) [4]. By Thursday's close it sat 22.2% below September 30 [3].

*Chart: **The 29% headline growth hides a 24-point spread between boxes and subscriptions** Bar chart of Fortinet Q3 2026 year-over-year growth rates by line: product revenue 37%, billings 29%, service billings 26%, service revenue 13%*

## The trigger was one line item, not the quarter

Service revenue grew 13% to $1.31 billion, and [full-year service guidance was cut to $5.15–$5.17 billion from $5.18–$5.22 billion](https://coincentral.com/why-is-fortinet-ftnt-stock-down-27-after-an-earnings-beat/), a trim of roughly $40 million [2][7]. [Jefferies](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/jefferies) flagged possible pull-forward deals that could bite in mid-2027; [Morgan Stanley](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/morgan-stanley) downgraded to Underweight on doubts the firewall refresh cycle lasts [7].

## The arithmetic the company gave away

CEO [Ken Xie](https://theinference.org/markets/people/ken-xie) [said on the call](https://www.marketbeat.com/instant-alerts/transcript-fortinet-q3-earnings-call-highlights-2026-10-28/) that pricing increases contributed roughly 10 percentage points of that 29% billings growth [1]. Strip price out and the underlying growth is nearer 19%: about a third of the headline came from higher prices on renewals, not more units sold [1][6]. Against a [13-times-trailing-sales valuation, 81% above its own 10-year median](https://io-fund.com/ai-stocks/ai-trends-2026-cybersecurity-stocks-rally), 19% organic growth reads very differently from 29% [6].

*Chart: **A third of the billings headline was price, and Q4 guidance assumes less of it** Bars: reported billings growth 29%, estimated ex-price growth about 19%, guided Q4 billings growth 20% at midpoint*

*Fortinet billings growth: reported Q3 29%, Q3 excluding the roughly 10 points of pricing per CEO Xie on the call (estimate, derived as 29 minus 10), and Q4 guidance midpoint growth of 20% as stated by the company. Source: MarketBeat, 28 Oct 2026. [1]*

## Fortinet's answer is timing, and a bigger buyback

Management's defense: service billings grew 26%, deferred revenue 19%, and short-term deferred revenue grew 14.5%, its fastest in five quarters, all signs that hardware lands before the subscriptions activate [1][8]. The board added $1.2 billion to the repurchase authorization when results were announced on October 28, before the crash, leaving $2 billion outstanding [1]. And [the 10-Q carries a warning](https://www.tradingview.com/news/tradingview:679e2294a5838:0-fortinet-3q-2026-revenue-2-08b-eps-0-86-10-q-summary/) the rally sellers missed: memory-chip shortages and higher component costs may constrain delivery of the very boxes driving the product surge [5].

## The fix has no price tag

Two days before earnings, Fortinet [launched the FortiGuard Inline AI Security Service](https://siliconangle.com/2026/10/29/fortinet-turns-its-firewall-footprint-into-an-ai-security-on-ramp/), a subscription that inspects prompts and agent traffic on FortiGate firewalls customers already own. No price disclosed, no adoption number [8]. Rosenblatt's analyst called the selloff overdone, arguing each new box becomes future service revenue [8]. Palo Alto, the rival that fell only 3.5%, already discloses AI-security ARR above $100 million [6].

Q4 billings of $2.775–$2.925 billion land next quarter [1]. The watch item is service billings in that report: if they hold near 26%, the timing story holds; if they slip, February 2027 brings the service-revenue print that decides whether the price-boosted billings were borrowed [1].

## Takeaway

A third of Fortinet's 29% billings growth was price on renewals, not units, and a trimmed service forecast made it matter: February's service-billings print decides whether the growth was borrowed.
