# Foxconn files to buy half of Mitsubishi Electric Mobility for up to $729 million; the AI chip deal remains unsigned

> On October 16 Foxconn filed to buy half of Mitsubishi Electric Mobility for up to ¥115 billion — a check with a ceiling for the non-AI business. Meanwhile the power-semiconductor merger, which would tie Mitsubishi Electric to AI-driven demand for electric power, missed its September deadline and is still not signed.

[Mitsubishi Electric](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/mitsubishi-electric) has cashed the check for the non-AI half of its portfolio and is still waiting for the AI half. On October 16 the investment vehicle of [Foxconn](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/foxconn-hon-hai-precision-industry), Lin Yin International Investment, [filed documents to buy 50% of Mitsubishi Electric Mobility, the group's automotive equipment division, for no more than ¥115 billion](https://www.tradingview.com/news/reuters.com,2026-10-16:newsml_RSP3330Za:0-reg-hon-hai-prec-ind-co-acquires-mitsubishi-electric-mobility-shares/) [1]. The Dealroom service, which aggregates data on deals, [values this amount at about $729 million](https://app.dealroom.co/news/note/foxconn-to-buy-50-of-mitsubishi-electric-mobility-for-729m) [2]. The AI half is the power-chip merger with [Rohm](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/rohm) and Toshiba — precisely the deal that, as our October 14 report established, missed its September signing deadline; nothing has been signed since [3].

## The auto deal gives Foxconn the parts catalog for contract car production

The filing caps the price but does not fix it: the final amount will be adjusted based on the accounting reports as of the transaction's closing date, and the closing itself still requires regulatory approvals [1]. On the same day the parent companies [announced a final agreement on joint management of the automotive equipment business](https://www.marketscreener.com/news/mitsubishi-electric-hon-hai-precision-industry-foxconn-and-mitsubishi-electric-reach-final-agree-ce785cdadb8cff2d) [4].

[The April memorandum](https://finance.yahoo.com/sectors/technology/articles/mitsubishi-electric-considers-alliance-foxconn-102354067.html) sets out the logic: electrification, autonomous driving and software-defined vehicles (software-defined vehicles). The mobility division will rely on Foxconn's capabilities and connections to supply an electric-vehicle platform from Japan, powertrain included [5]. Foxconn already assembles a considerable share of the world's consumer electronics; the purchase gives it a catalog of automotive electronics that will let the company sell car manufacturing the way it now sells phone manufacturing — as a contract manufacturing service. Mitsubishi Electric halves its exposure and retains half of the equity.

## The AI half is three chipmakers and no signature

## Takeaway

Foxconn's ¥115 billion filing allows Mitsubishi Electric to cash the non-AI half of its portfolio at a price with a ceiling, while the power-chip merger of Rohm and Toshiba remains one signature away; whether it is signed will be decided by Rohm's recovery, fueled by demand for AI.
