# Furukawa Bets 100 Billion Yen on Fiber While Corning's Customers Lock Supply Through 2032

> TrendForce counts a 180 million fiber-kilometer global shortfall for 2026 and data-center fiber prices above five times their 2025 levels. Furukawa Electric's 100 billion yen four-country expansion answers it, but the new lines ship from late fiscal 2028, after Corning's customers have already locked supply through 2032.

[Furukawa Electric](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/furukawa-electric), the Tokyo-listed optical fiber and cable maker (TSE: 5801), has [laid out a plan to spend about 100 billion yen](https://physical-ai-times.com/en/news/e7b67eb54a5c/), roughly $650 million, expanding fiber and rollable ribbon cable output at four units at once: Lightera LLC in the United States, Lightera LatAm S.A. in Brazil, Lightera Japan and Birla Furukawa Fibre Optics in India [1]. The plan covers land and buildings alongside manufacturing equipment, and it roughly doubles rollable ribbon cable capacity, in fiber-count terms, against the end of fiscal 2025 [1].

Mass production phases in from the second half of fiscal 2028 [1].

## The market it will enter is already sold out

TrendForce, the Taipei research firm, [forecast on October 19](https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/general/glw-vz-cohr-in-focus-as-ai-fiber-shortage-drives-prices-higher-trendforce-sees-supply-crunch-through-2028/ar-AA2fAzGf) that 2026 global fiber demand reaches 577 million fiber-kilometers against a shortfall of 180 million fiber-km, with the shortage persisting until at least 2028 [3]. Capacity utilization across the industry's plants sits at 92 percent and inventories have fallen from four months' supply in 2024 to one [3].

Pricing follows scarcity: bend-insensitive fiber used inside data centers is projected to average [more than five times its 2025 price this year](https://theinference.org/article/ai-fiber-prices-may-run-5-times-2025-levels-but-corning-s-ceo-says-price-is-not-the-profit-story), mainstream telecom fiber about 3.7 times, AI backbone fiber about 2.8 times [3] [7]. Where the demand comes from is shifting too: data centers account for 18 to 20 percent of fiber consumption this year, a share TrendForce expects to climb to 30 to 35 percent in 2027 [3].

## Buyers who signed first, eat first

Preform, the glass rod from which fiber is drawn, takes 18 to 24 months of capacity expansion to bring online [3]. A contract signed in 2026 therefore outranks a plant announced in 2026 [3].

[Corning](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/corning), the US fiber leader, agreed in September to supply [Verizon](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/verizon) about 129 million fiber-kilometers, or 80 million fiber miles, through 2032, and signed a more than $3 billion fiber deal with [AT&T](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/at-and-t) the same month [3]. In January, Corning signed [a deal worth up to $6 billion with Meta Platforms](https://optics.org/news/corning-and-meta-agree-up-to-6-billion-fiber-deal), which [anchors an expansion of Corning's Hickory, North Carolina cable plant](https://theinference.org/article/corning-just-bet-585-million-that-the-ai-fiber-shortage-lasts-for-years) [4], running through 2030 [5]. Furukawa's new lines ship after fiscal 2028, so near-term pricing power stays with whoever has fiber in the ground [4][5].

## The profit signal is partly one-off

On September 24, Furukawa raised its interim profit forecast attributable to owners from 42.5 billion to 58.0 billion yen while holding sales guidance at 720.0 billion yen and operating profit at 49.5 billion yen [2].

The same disclosure covered expected special gains from selling investment securities, so part of that 15.5 billion yen jump is one-off rather than fiber margin [6]. [A reported INR 45 billion fiber plant in Gujarat](https://www.ad-hoc-news.de/boerse/news/nebenwerte/furukawa-electric-weighs-inr-45-billion-gujarat-plan-what-it-means-for-furukawa-electric-stock/70406880), aimed at data-center cable, remains in final discussions rather than signed [2]. Meanwhile Corning's shares have [lost roughly half their value since a June record](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/ai/articles/meta-fiber-partner-corning-capitalize-165213166.html) despite booming optical sales, a warning on how fast markets price crowded trades [5].

## The November 9 checkpoint

Furukawa reports fiscal first-half results on November 9, 2026, at 2:00 p.m [6]. JST [6]. The test is narrow and dated: whether tight fiber pricing is already lifting operating margins on existing capacity before a single new meter ships. Capacity is the slow lane. Contracts are the fast lane, and the fast lane is booked.

## Takeaway

Furukawa Electric's 100 billion yen, four-country fiber expansion ships from late fiscal 2028, after Corning's Verizon, AT&T and Meta contracts have already locked supply through 2030 and 2032; the test is November 9 results, whether tight fiber pricing lifts margins on existing lines.
